The View From A Chair
"We erect tombstones for our dead relatives and build monuments to our dead leaders. When a beloved writer dies, we read his works, again. A writer, if what he says is worth the hearing, and if his skill is sufficient to make it worth hearing twice, builds his own memorial while he lives. " When Judith Merril wrote these words in The Year's Best SF: 11th Annual Edition (1966), she was speaking about Shirley Jackson who had died in August, 1965. When I recently reread them, I realized no tribute I could write about Judy could ever describe, with such simple poignancy, how I and many, many others feel about this extraordinary woman better than her own words, written over thirty years ago. Still, the desire, and the need, to honour such a remarkable individual is strong and so we dedicate this issue to Judy, with admiration and respect. My thanks to all those who have so graciously shared their thoughts and memories with us in these pages; to their heartfelt words, let me now add a few of my own.

Review by Asta Sinusas
Check out this book at: www.btlbooks.com This is a book about love - the passionate love Judith Merril had for particular moments and people in her life, of which this book is an expression, and the love of her granddaughter who completed the manuscript in her own expression of devotion. The title is a warning and a creed “ ’Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all ”. This is not your typical autobiography where the chapters are equally chronological and tell the story of how a person was born, lived and died. Instead, it is how one woman loved, lost, and loved again. Because only parts of the manuscript were complete in 1997 when Judith Merril passed, the final result is a collection of essays and private letters that are sandwiched in between first-hand memoir. Because of the different styles of writing, a larger picture emerges as to how this unique woman related privately and publicly. The first few chapters start out innocently enough although hindsight does creep in to color the tale, “ A Member of the Universe ” and “ In the Beginning ” talk about the start of Judith Grossman and her Jewish heritage as well as her father’s suicide in 1929. “

That's because no other genre generates as much creative input or feedback from its fandom. Yeoman editor David Hartwell of TOR books, an SF tastemaker since the late '60s, likes to recall that a few decades ago America's SF production was so small that every fan could read every book and story published within a year, and potentially respond to every idea introduced into the field's mind stream. SF remains so interactive that new editors and writers are routinely recruited from the ranks of fanzine self-publishers and avid Letters to the Editor correspondents. SF novels stimulate a huge amount of paraliterature: letters, fanzine essays, memoirs, convention speeches, and oral histories. Two new books focus on such paraliterature as the best way to understand science fiction. Both were written by women, who've typically been underrecognized as key players in the evolution of SF. Pulp Show The Friends of the Merril Collection is an organization through which members of the science fiction community can support The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy. The Friends was originally a citizen advisory group to the Toronto Public Library Board. It has its own constitution and bylaws. The stated objectives of the organization, according to its constitution are:
  • To encourage interest in The Merril Collection and the interests of the library. To increase awareness of works of the fantastic imagination and of Canadian contribution to this field. To advise the Toronto Public Library Board on policy matters concerning the collection in consultation with the Library's staff. To act as a resource for The Merril Collection and other public and private collections in Canada and elsewhere in consultation with the staff of the Toronto Public Libary Board.
The Friends of the Merril Collection is not a fan organization; it is a group of members with a common interest: to promote the collection and to make it the best public collection of speculative fiction in the world. Currently our two main means of accomplishing that task are by publishing the newsletter
