James Merrill's Life Ann T. Keene Merrill was sent to exclusive private schools in the city and then to preparatory school at Lawrenceville, in New Jersey, where he continued writing poetry as well as short stories. With the help of his father he privately published a small collection of verse. After graduating in 1943 he entered Amherst College but took a leave of absence the following year to serve in the U.S. Army until the end of World War II, in 1945. Despite this interruption, Merrill excelled in his studies, majoring in literature. Having written a thesis on Marcel Proust, who became a major inspiration for his work, he graduated summa cum laude with a Phi Beta Kappa key in 1947. During Merrill's years at Amherst his future career as a poet seemed all but assured. By the time of his graduation his verse had already appeared in Poetry and the Kenyon Review , and he had published his first book of poems, The Black Swan (1946). After college he moved back to New York to writethe enormous Merrill family fortune allowed him to pursue his interests without having to earn a livingbut after a while he found the atmosphere too intense and distracting for serious work. He traveled for several years in Europe and Asia, reflecting on his life and family and apparently coming to terms with his homosexuality. He eventually settled in the small coastal town of Stonington, Connecticut, with David Jackson, who would become his longtime companion. During the 1960s Merrill bought a house in Athens and subsequently another residence in Key West, Florida, and divided his time among the three homes.

THE MUSICALITY OF MERRILL: Perhaps a Preface To a Masters Presentation In Poetry. i n January 1994's American Spectator magazine Christopher Cahill quotes Harold Bloom calling James Merrill the "Mozart of American Poetry." But he doesn't go on to discuss why. Here I will try. Cahill touches on Merrill's love of language, his operatic tone and his dramatic use of rhyme and meter. Many biographers mention his love of opera since age eleven, his technical skill on piano, and some of the famous poets and musicians (ie: artists) he knew, befriended and/or slept with. No one seems ready to further discuss how his musicality influenced his poetry and especially how his poetry influenced his musicality. Well, here I go. I will try tackling the former because the latter won't fit less than five pages. I therefore beg a sequel, trilogy or underwritten grant someday to begin a life's work interviewing the piano he played which was moved to his mother's house after his death. Oy!

Merrill, James Merrill, James (James Ingram Merrill), , American poet, b. New York City. One of the most admired poets of his generation, he is noted for the technical virtuosity, elegant formality, refined lyricism, and witty urbanity of verse that, while always reserved, became more autobiographical, intimate, and colloquial over the years. His early volumes include First Poems Water Street Nights and Days The Fire Screen (1969), and Braving the Elements (1972). In the brilliant Divine Comedies (1976; Pulitzer Prize) and The Changing Light at Sandover (1982) Merrill used the device of a Ouija board to invoke the spirit of his aesthetic forebears. Among later volumes are Late Settings (1985) and A Scattering of Salts (1995). Merrill won every major literary award for poetry, including the Pulitzer and Bollingen prizes and two National Book Awards. He also wrote plays (e.g., The Immortal Husband (1955), novels (e.g., The Seraglio (1957), and essays. See his memoir, A Different Person (1993); R. Labrie, James Merrill (1982), J. Moffett

James Merrill's Myth: An Interview
By Helen Vendler James Merrill
(James Merrill recently published Mirabell: Books of Number in which he continues his account, begun in "The Book of Ephraim" published in Divine Comedies , of conversations held, via the Ouija board, with dead friends and spirits in "another world." Merrill and his friend David Jackson receive the messages which are transcribed letter by letter; Merrill then edits and rewrites the transcriptions. The transcriptions are set in a frame of autobiographical narrative and personal reflection. The spirits and the dead speak in capital letters; the poet writes in lower case. The questions that it occurred to me to ask Merrill are those of a reader confronting a poem unquestionably beautiful, but also baffling.) Helen Vendler : When you called your last book Divine Comedies , did you mean by that allusion to Dante that you were planning a trilogy? James Merrill : Not consciously. I'd convinced myself that "The Book of Ephraim" told everything I had to say about the "other world." Because of its length and looniness I'd taken to calling
