Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq Separation Your absence has gone through me Like thread through a needle. Everything I do is stiched with its color. W.S. Merwin A startling, compelling poem - note the inversion of the usual 'your absence has left a hole in me' imagery. The idea of a 'positive' absence is unusual, but it has a definite *rightness* to it, which Merwin captures brilliantly in his metaphor. This is one of those poems about which one could quibble endlessly, wondering what exactly makes it a 'poem'. That's a thorny enough area, though, that to hack through it would divert attention from the poem itself, and thereby miss the point entirely. Personally, I'd rather just appreciate it. martin Links: Biography of Merwin: http://www.poets.org/poets/poets.cfm?prmID=124 Poem #1093 Do you Yahoo!? Y! There once more the new moon in spring
above the roofs of the village
in the clear sky the cold twilight under the evening star the thin shell sinking so lightly it seems not to be moving and no sound from the village at this moment nor from the valley below it with its still river nor even from any of the birds and I have been standing here in this light seeing this moon and its one star while the cows went home with their bells and the sheep were folded and gone and the elders fell silent one after another and loved souls were no longer seen and my hair turned white and I was looking up out of a time of late blessings. W.S. Merwin’s The Speed Of Light
W.S. Merwin is about as prototypical a Dead White Male as 1 can get. Yes, he’s male. Yes, he’s white. Yes, he’s been creatively dead for the last 25-30 years. But it goes even beyond that. He once had great potential. His 1 st
At the center of this dystopic hulk of a career was WSM’s incredible revelation to ‘forego punctuation’. What has followed have been many books of refried Brothers Grimmian-type bits of nonpunctual doggerel- great, eh? Apropos of this total reduction from potential poetic greatness to wasted poetic hack is this poem which bears a title, The Speed Of Light
    The Speed Of Light
So gradual in those summers was the going*** of the age it seemed that the long days setting out when the stars faded over the mountains were not*** leaving us even as the birds woke in full song and the dew glittered in the webs it appeared then that the clear morning opening into the sky was something of ours to have and keep and that the brightness we could not touch and the air we could not hold had come to be there all the time for us and would never be gone and that the axle*** we did not hear was not turning when the ancient car coughed in the roofer’s barn and rolled out echoing first thing into the lane and the only tractor in the village rumbled and went into its rusty*** mutterings before heading out of its lean-to into the cow pats and the shadow of the lime tree we did not see that the swallows flashing and the sparks*** of their cries were fast in the spokes of the hollow

Release: Immediate Poet W.S. Merwin will read Sept. 21 at UI IOWA CITY, Iowa One of America's major poets, W.S. Merwin, will read from his work at 8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21, in Shambaugh Auditorium of the University of Iowa Main Library. The reading, sponsored by the UI Writers' Workshop, is free and open to the public. The recipient of a Pulitzer Prize for his collection "The Carrier of Ladders," Merwin is a translator as well as a poet. His translations, prose and poetry have attracted attention from literary critics since the publication of his first book "A Mask for Janus," in 1952. Although the poet's work has undergone many stylistic changes throughout the course of his career, it is described as being unified by the recurring theme of man's separation from nature. Merwin sees the consequences of that alienation as disastrous for the human race. Eric Hartley says of Merwin in the "Dictionary of Literary Biography": "From the first of his career as a poet, Merwin has steeped himself in other cultures and other literary traditions, and he has been praised as a translator. This eclectic background has given him a sense of the presence of the past, of timelessness in time, that comes across emphatically in his poetry."
