FUGITIVE PIECES

Tuesday, April 25, 1997 I've often wondered what draws an artist at one end of the literary spectrum to travel to the other; maybe it is simply the magnetic north of possibility - the promise of language always to exult. Canadian Anne Michaels has written two books of poetry, ``Miner's Pond'' and ``The Weight of Oranges,'' and ``Fugitive Pieces'' is her first novel, which she reportedly worked on for nearly a decade. Word by blessed word, it is a gorgeously written book: aflame with the subzero cold of history and the passions of emotional comprehension.

23. Robert Fulford's Column About Anne Michaels In Italy
Discusses the success of 'Fugitive Pieces' in Italy.
http://www.robertfulford.com/michaels.html
Robert Fulford's column about Anne Michaels in Italy
Globe and Mail , February 4, 1998) Siena In a wine bar tucked into a medieval Siena building, Anne Michaels was eating lunch while an employee of her Italian publisher translated the first newspaper review of In Fugo , the Italian edition of Fugitive Pieces . The reviewer, in La Nazione , was listing other Canadian writers. Sandra Birdsell, Margaret Laurence and Alice Munro all showed up in his first paragraph, and then he threw in Michael Ondaatje for good measure. Listening to the translation, the Canadians sitting with Michaels couldn't tell whether the reviewer was providing context or just showing off a sophisticated knowledge of Canadian fiction. Certainly he liked the book. The headline said, "Long life to Michaels for the good of her readers," a pleasant thought. It was even more pleasant to realize that in Italy an understanding of Canadian literature is something to brag about. For Anne Michaels, the Italian launch of her book wasn't exactly routine, but it wasn't unique either. Fugitive Pieces has attracted more international praise than any first novel by a serious writer in Canadian history. Publishers in about 25 countries have bought rights. Several times, Michaels has had the eerie experience of hearing words, vaguely resembling her own, read aloud by strangers in languages she cannot understandin Germany, Spain, and Greece as well as Italy.

Roman. Rowohlt 317 Seiten ISBN: DM 16,9 Ersch.

Biography
Anne Michaels was born in 1958 in Toronto. Educated at the University of Toronto, Michaels taught creative writing there for several years. She is highly regarded for both her poetry and her lyrical prose. Her collections of poetry, The Weight of Oranges (1986) and Miner’s Pond (1991) were followed by her novel Fugitive Pieces , which was awarded the Trillium Award (1997) and Britain’s Orange Prize for Fiction. The imagery in Michaels’ poems reflect her interest in music and painting. Her verse varies from short love poems, to elegies, to dramatic monologues, to long poems that balance lyrical and narrative tensions.

About the Book
About this guide
The questions, discussion topics, and reading list that follow are intended to enhance your group's reading of Anne Michaels's Fugitive Pieces . We hope they will aid your understanding of the many rich themes that make up this radiant and lyrical first novel by one of Canada's foremost poets. In Poland during World War II, seven-year-old Jakob Beer's parents are murdered by Nazi soldiers and his adored elder sister, Bella, is abducted. The mourning child flees and is miraculously rescued by Athos Roussos, a Greek geologist. Athos smuggles Jakob to his native island of Zakynthos, where he successfully hides him from the Nazi authorities and introduces him to a new world of geology, poetry, botany, and art. After the war the two move to Toronto, and Jakob embarks on marriage and a career as a poet. Through the experience of profound love, Jakob eventually transcends the tragedies of his youth; but his spirit remains forever linked with that of his lost sister. As Jakob gets older, his life and work provide inspiration and, eventually, spiritual regeneration, for Ben, a younger man whose own family has been blighted by the Holocaust. Fugitive Pieces is an incandescent novel, heartbreaking and finally joyful. Its vivid images, its poetry and its wisdom will prove unforgettable.

Anne Michaels
was born in Toronto in 1958. In 1996, her first novel Fugitive Pieces established her as one of Canada’s most lauded authors. Winner of the Guardian Fiction Award, “ Fugitive Pieces has qualities one associates with poetry: intensity, precision, and a celebration of moments of vision.” Not straying from the truth, Michaels has published two collections of poetry: The Weight of Oranges (the Commonwealth Prize for the Americas, 1986) and Miner's Pond (Canadian Authors Award, 1991). Her third collection, Skin Divers, will be published later this year. “The present, like a landscape, is only a small part of a mysterious narrative.” Anne Michaels lives in Toronto. Fugitive Pieces (part)
The shadow past is shaped by everything that never happened. Invisible, it melts the present like rain through karst. A biography of longing. It steers us like magnetism, a spirit torque. This is how one becomes undone by smell, a word, a place, the photo of a mountain of shoes. By love that closes its mouth before calling a name.
I did not witness the most important events of my life. My deepest story must be told by a blind man, a prisoner of sound. From behind a wall, from underground. From the corner of a small house on a small island that juts like a bone from the skin of sea.

This has been a very busy year for me. It started with the chartering of Tau Sigma Kappa, the Colorado Chapter of Tri-Ess, continued with being bestowed the title of Baroness 28 to the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire. That was a great honor. I'm still going strong with the Denver community. Please have a look at my bio and fotos .
