"When I write, I want to feel that something's at stake," says Anne Michaels, whose debut novel, Fugitive Pieces , was recently shortlisted for the Giller Prize, Canada's highest award for fiction. Internationally, rights have been bought in the UK, Germany, and Brazil, with more pending in France, Greece, and Japan. Fugitive Pieces is a beautiful, poetic, and intelligent novel in two parts: the first two-thirds is Jewish-Polish poet Jakob Beer's account of how Athos Roussos, a Greek scientist and humanist, saved him (in every sense) from the Nazis; the latter part is Jewish-Canadian professor Ben's posthumous letter to Jakob, as he excavates the literary remnants and artifacts left behind. Fugitive Pieces "I had the beginning and the ending in my mind even as early as 1980," she said, "but I didn't let myself begin writing until quite a few years later, 1986, after my first book [of poems, The Weight of Oranges ] came out. It's important that the facts have a chance to ferment, to be absorbed, in order to try and fathom whatever meaning is hidden among those facts.

Summer 2000 Poems The Weight of Oranges; Miner's Pond; Skin Divers Anne Michaels Knopf ($25) by Fionn Meade hether slipping under the sheets as a late lover to the great Italian modernist painter Amadeo Modigliani or donning the seventeenth-century scientific cloak of the revolutionary mathematician Johannes Kepler, Canadian poet Anne Michaels offers a series of persona poems that ruminate and seduce with an erudite yet sexy seriousness. Michaels landed squarely on the literary map with her highly-acclaimed first novel Fugitive Pieces , and it is undoubtedly her success as a novelist that has afforded this troika of companion books, previously published separately by smaller Canadian presses, the unusual opportunity of appearing together in one volume their first time stateside. When read together as the author intended, these poems reveal, much like the work of her compatriot and supporter, Michael Ondaatje, an apprenticeship in the attentions of poetry that serves to both illuminate and extend her more well-known prose. Offset by ephemeral lyrics about family, lovers, and geography, it is Michaels's repeated visitations to the lives of artists, scientists, and thinkers that most vividly enwrap the reader in her world. Both furtive and essayistic, Michaels deftly re-creates the historic moment of an idea as if it were her own. In her portrait of the embattled Kepler, for instance, Michaels delivers not so much an authentic 'voice from the past' as the impassioned voice of the awe-inspired:

"Some stones are so heavy only silence helps you carry them," says a character in this highly poetic novel. Despite that, Anne Michaels finds a voice full of love and compassion to talk about a dark and painful period of history laid on a platter of Fugitive Pieces. Reading this book I was immersed in a river of revelations that keeps flowing long after the last page of the novel is turned. A river that runs into the present and informs with its embrace of the human condition seen throught the eyes of a seven year old Holocaust survivor, Jakob. With pure linguistic delight landscapes of places and minds are drawn with a cartographers passion. "Terra Cognita and Terra Incognita inhabit exactly the same coordinates of time and space." There will always be maps for us to draw. We still get lost in the landscapes of mind, of human, of spirit and face ourselves in all the beauty and all the ugliness we are capable of creating. This book unfolds one leaf, one word at a time. "Every moment is two moments."

The questions, discussion topics, and reading list that follow are intended to enhance your group's reading of Anne Michaels's Fugitive Pieces . We hope they will aid your understanding of the many rich themes that make up this radiant and lyrical first novel by one of Canada's foremost poets. In Poland during World War II, seven-year-old Jakob Beer's parents are murdered by Nazi soldiers and his adored elder sister, Bella, is abducted. The mourning child flees and is miraculously rescued by Athos Roussos, a Greek geologist. Athos smuggles Jakob to his native island of Zakynthos, where he successfully hides him from the Nazi authorities and introduces him to a new world of geology, poetry, botany, and art. After the war the two move to Toronto, and Jakob embarks on marriage and a career as a poet. Through the experience of profound love, Jakob eventually transcends the tragedies of his youth; but his spirit remains forever linked with that of his lost sister. As Jakob gets older, his life and work provide inspiration and, eventually, spiritual regeneration, for Ben, a younger man whose own family has been blighted by the Holocaust.

Turning Twenty-Three

You turned twenty-two in the rain,
we walked in rubber boots
along Lowther, glazed milky under streetlamps.
At midnight, the sky clear,
we drove your jazz-filled car
through cold pungent streets to the lake
where we collected stones by flashlight.
The wind wrapped us in its torsions,
we couldn't hear each other although we shouted,
wet with star-swallowing waves. By morning the stones we found were dull with air, but I couldn't forget the smell, the trees' intimate dampness, husks of buds in green pools on the sidewalks, scattered by the rain's distracted hands. To love one person above all others is despair, you said, turning twenty-two propaganda of the senses, the narrow-minded heart. We are like magnets when together, averted by our sameness. Above the corrugated, elastic lake, the darkening sky holds out its arms. A thousand miles away, you're turning twenty-three. The grass is hunchbacked, pushed by wind into the sand. The water is hunchbacked, onto the beach, into itself.

Piezas en fuga
Traducción de Eva Cruz García
Alfaguara, Madrid, 1997

    Fugitive Pieces
    Anne Michaels
Book Description In 1940, Jakob Beer, a seven-year-old boy, bursts from the mud of a war-torn Polish city, where he has buried himself to hide from Nazi soldiers who have killed his family. Though he should have died with his family, he has not only survived but been rescued by a Greek geologist. With this electrifying backdrop, Anne Michaels propels us into her rapturously acclaimed novel of loss, memory, history, and redemption. Michaels lets us witness Jakob's transformation from a half-wild casualty of the Holocaust to an artis who extracts meaning from the abyss. Filled with mysterious symmetries and rendered in heart-stopping prose, Fugitive Pieces is a triumphant work. A New York Times Notable Book of the Year

The author is a poet and definitely writes like one. Doreen described this as a wonderful book and read us several passages. It deals with the holocaust and a young Jewish boy taken alone to Greece. He is haunted for the rest of his life by the fate of his remaining family under the Nazis.
Doreen 30/8/98 Another post-modernist book, but this one works - the author writes quite similarly to John Berger. Written mostly in the third person about a holocaust survivor climbing out of the abyss, with strong descriptions of other characters, the books moves from Greece to Canada and the story works very well. Along the way there are some strange detours, and a change of voice for the main character was a bit confusing - Doreen had also read the book, and got seriously lost at that point. A similar technique to The Underpainter, but in this book one has sympathy with the character and at some points the language is really beautiful. Highly recommended, a good book.
