SISTER TO THE RAIN by Melisa Michaels
Roc October 1998; $5.99 paperback 304 pp; ISBN 0-451-45730-7
2 Reviews

Highly Recommended by Harriet Klausner San Francisco private investigators Rosie Lavine and Shannon Arthur do not want to have elves as clients ever again after their previous case almost left them for dead (see COLD IRON ). Who would want as their client a sociopath, which is what an elf actually is. So who else would walk into their office seeking to obtain their services than one of those frail looking, too pretty beings. Rosie and Shannon were recommended to Lord Finandiel, a FOOF if there ever was one. He wants the sleuths to investigate a manifestation that is frightening all the children (wee ones are held in honor by elves) in his community of truebloods, mortal, and halflings. Since the fee is good and the case seems easy enough, Rosie and Shannon agree to look into the eerie noises that are frightening everyone. However, the simple case takes a bizarre turn when a mortal is murdered. Now, the two Bay area detectives must ferret out a killer before things turn bloody between the races struggling to share a community in the California mountains. SISTER TO THE RAIN, the second book in the Lavine fantasy mysteries, is a astounding who-done-it that makes supernatural creatures seem absolutely real. The story line is fun, but the characters steal the show. From the acerbically sarcastic Rosie to the prejudicial Finandiel, readers feel like elves are genuine and living in California. Though similar to Laurell Hamilton's Blake mysteries, Melissa Michaels makes her own distinct magic that fans of fantasy who-done-its and the fantasy genre as a whole will want to read. P.S. To learn what a FOOF is, read the book.

    MELISA C. MICHAELS SKIRMISH
    (aka: SKYRIDER 1:
    SKIRMISH)
Book cover art by Bruce Jensen. AUTHOR'S SITE Skirmish, I'm sorry to say, is a cruddy little waste of time, a book whose gritty and "rebellious" space opera aspirations are cut off at the knees by some of the least appealing characters and follow-the-dots plotting I've read in recent memory. As they say in Hollywood, it's a big So What. I think most of us would agree that a requirement of good, junk-food level escapism is that it ought to be, at the very least, fun. Second Star but hello, here they are. Oh, yes, I forgot to mention; the Belters (those who work in the asteroid belts, whom, we are informed, have developed a gene for freefall) have their very own slang, the most commonly repeated phrase of which is "Whatsamattayou?" Michaels explains that the pilots' juvenile strutting is simply their mechanism for dealing with the fear of sudden horrible death that we're told is part-and-parcel of living in the asteroid belt; okay, but they're still assholes. But if the concentrated bad-Marvel-comic level characterizations and dialogue weren't off-putting enough, Michaels then steers us into a dull and generic sabotage plot that barely generates enough sense-of-wonder to power a four-watt nightlight. Suffice it to say that this brief but still tedious novel offered precious little of merit to compel me through to its finale; I've rarely felt so indifferent towards a story. Should I be surprised that it spawned not one but

    MELISA C. MICHAELS FIRST BATTLE
Book cover art by Bruce Jensen. AUTHOR'S SITE Expecting a book to suck is not, I suppose, the fairest or most open-minded approach to bring to reading. But it does mean that you're never disappointed, and it often means you get to be pleasantly surprised. Case in point: First Battle , the second of five novels about "Skyrider" Melacha Rendell. The first book in this series was the worst sort of space opera dreck, featuring amateurish writing, a loathsome protagonist and a tepid, frequently illogical plot. This sequel isn't going to earn Melisa Michaels a seat at the table with C. J. Cherryh or David Weber, but it shows marked improvement. First Battle is silly but fun, and fun was a quality conspicuously absent from Skirmish . The story works on the level of the kind of thing the Sci-Fi Channel likes to run: fast, easy, formulaic, and well within the grasp of the least demanding audience functional literacy allows. As junk food entertainment goes, you could do worse than First Battle Recap: Michaels' little saga is set in the near future when humanity has colonized Mars and the asteroid belt, and the Colonials have begun to adapt genetically to their new environment, some of them perfectly suited to free-fall and incapable of handling gravity at all. Political turmoil exists between the Colonials (known derisively as Belters) and the Earthers. The Earthers are the Bad Guys. The Belters want independence from Earth, and Earth will have none of it. That's all you need to know for backstory purposes.

    DARE TO DREAM
    - February 2002 D.J. Simms was one of Tulsa's best lawyers, a chilly and intimidating woman who never spoke of her past, who moved numbly through the present, and who dared not consider the future. Nick Sanders was her client, a powerful man whose life was all glamor and success. She was terrified of him. Nick changed her life. He brought warmth into it, and laughter, and love. But love to D.J. was no dream, it was a nightmare, and she had enough of those already.
    HIDING PLACES
April 2002 Four years after a peaceful idyll with Anton Roeffler that ended disastrously, Hillary Michaels must return to face his bitterness and distrust before the lies they've both told ruin another's life.

I make my living from it, and my books have sold more than a million copies worldwide. You'd think good writing comes easier with time, but it doesn't. The more you know, the better a writer you become, the more ambitious you get. Your words must sing. Every sentence must be a poem, every page a life-altering experience. Okay, so I exaggerate. But I'm still learning my craft, even now after 20 years as a professional in this field. I hope this collection of articles proves helpful in improving your writing, too, whether you are just starting out or you have sold your twentieth book. One last suggestion: take a look at Mike Resnick's book, Putting it together: Turning Sow's Ear Drafts into Silk Purse Stories . Even though I published it, I can honestly say it's the finest book on writing I've seen in many years. Resnick guides you through the process of how he revised a number of his own stories to make them not just better, but award caliber. I learned a lot from it, and you will too. Click here to see it.
