A Tribute To Beat Poet Jack Micheline
Here are some poems by the late Beat poet Jack Micheline, who passed away in 1998. Jack was a real poet of the streets and one of the better Beat writers. I am happy to post them and grateful to his son Vince Silvaer, who runs the Jack Micheline Foundation and the official Jack Micheline Foundation Website at http://www.jackmicheline.com Check it out for an excellent biography, bibliography, examples of his poems and artwork, photos, and mission statement from the foundation. Also thanks to Dave Christy for lending me the poems for posting.
Poem To The Freaks
Jack Micheline

To live as I have done is surely absurd
In cheap hotels and furnished rooms
To walk up side streets and down back alleys
Talking to oneself
And screaming to the sky obscenities
That the arts is a rotten business indeed
That mediocrity and the rage of fashion rules My poems and paintings piled on the floor To be one with himself A Saint A Prince To persevere Through storms and hardons Through dusk and dawns To kick death in the ass To be passed over like a bad penny A midget An Ant A roach A freak A Hot Piece An Outlaw Raise your cup and drink my friend Drink for those who walk alone in the night To the crippled and the blind To the lost and the damned To the lone bird flying in the sky Drink to wonder Drink to me Drink to pussy and dreams Drink to madness and all the stars I hear the birds singing God Bless The Unknown Jack Micheline

This was the night
S.A. Griffin saved the life of a cockroach
From near drowning in a beer bottle
(A momentary triumph of life over death)
So that it could live long enough to hear
Jack Micheline celebrate himself
Beaten with no chaser
At the side of the stage
The insect lay exhausted Drops of beer in its small vacuoles Belly up, legs apart, feelers flaccid In a state of complete receptivity (The finest way I know to receive poetry) I suppose it was enchanted - The spray of words and spittle The scattering of crumbs It appeared as though the poet was being tickled by Ten thousand cockroach antennae simultaneously Most people suck Slave to the boss No mind of their own Most people lost souls of the universe Worry what their neighbor says Believe in the newspapers Watch T.V. Cry in barrooms Never get enough And a darkening at the crotch As he peed in his light beige pants Long and thin stretched the stain Like a tiny, but growing Israel

J ack came into the bookstore often. He'd sort through the sale books out front and then he always headed for the back to use the bathroom. I just had to hope he'd hit the toilet and not splash all over. What a cantankerous grumpy man Jack was. Jack Micheline, Beat poet, 68 years old. He couldn't let a day go by without ranting about how Lawrence Ferlinghetti had fucked him over and publishers were too timid to touch an outlaw like him. He wasn't an outlaw. But he was also a loudmouth (a gifted one) who tried to sell me lousy books or sell back the books I gave him with his penciled in imaginary prices. Then when I wouldn't buy them he'd shout at me, " What's the matter with these man! Didn't you say your store is going to fold if you don't have more people bringing in books to sell? What's the matter with these! These are good! I'd say to him, "

http://members.aol.com/Extrafret/micheline.html
What would I do, says Jack,
If I wasn't a poet?
I would sell: sell for pleasure
Every syllable that falls through my never forgetting
I would take dry goods from warehouses
And insert a wet poem
Through every crack in every crate
I would live inside a steel beam
In a high building
Outide the downtown of a small city
And sing steel songs for pleasure I would play my fiddle with a bow of brass On strings of twine In the street in front of stores and not be a poet I would take oranges from carts in front of stores And give them to children I would play baseball under bridges in the middle of the night And howl with the crickets I would drink beer with honest men in loud conversation While they tore the language down To its moving roots I would write a history in words I don't know Send it to a print shop that had no press To press with plates that had no ink If I didn't say my poems on the street And put the money In a little wooden bowl Andy Cohen Back to index

An onsite report from the memorial for Beat poet jack micheline held in San Francisco. Justone more recollection of the fierce street poet jack micheline.
http://www.times.cc/webs/times/t6/Kaufman.htm
An on-site report from the memorial for Beat poet Jack Micheline held in San Francisco. by Alan Kaufman Akpoem@aol.com Remembering Micheline by Alan Kaufman We're all here, all the self-suiciding maniacs of the San Francisco poetry scene, with bitten off bits of each others ears still stuck between our wolfish teeth: Jack Hirschman, Harold Norse, Q.R.Hand, Gerald Nicosia, Bruce Isaacson just in from Nevada and now, for crying out loud, Michael MacClure who wouldn't give Micheline the time of day when he was alive has just walked in, humbly lowered himself to the floor and immedately sent several signals to Kush, tonight's organizer, to jump his name ahead of the peons on the sign-up list.. In the downstairs reception area growling videos of Jack wailing verse to a screeching sax entertains the moochers and hanger-ons who really don't give a shit about some croaked old Beat poet: they're here for a free nosh on bagels and wine. Somehow one feels that Jack would have liked these folks best. At least they're more real then the famous phonies showing up, folks who once walked right past him when he was alive, broke, hungry and hawking his three buck chapbooks out in the rain under the marquee of the Roxie cinema, around the corner on Sixteenth Street. By now, about three hundred people have filled the upstairs hall. Jack could have sold a lot of books tonight. As cameras roll Kush kicks off with a convocational chant that wrings the heart. The wind has Jack, it goes. A lot of eyes in the place tear up, mine included for the poetry of death. Then Jack's old sax man mounts the stage, axe in hand. In the thirty years he'd played behind Micheline he says, Micheline would growl: 'Sax man, when my hand goes up you play'. "So lets imagine Jack's up here with me now" says the sax man "and his hand is raised for me to blow this one last time for him". The grieving memories of his horn turn the room into all the little jazz spots and dives where Jack broke indifferent hearts with the truth burning in his guts.

Eddie Woods Jack Micheline in Amsterdam
Eddie and Jack met again in the Netherlands 10 years later, when they performed together at the 1992 North Sea Jazz Festival. Although the two maintained a lively correspondence until shortly before Jack's death in February 1998, this interview got misplaced in the shuffle of vicissitudes and only recently resurfaced.
JM:
EW:
Here's to that good life. [Eddie raises a cognac snifter]
JM:
Well, whatever it is, whatever that meshuggeneh life is.
EW:
And how exactly did that come about, arriving at this enviable point?
JM: Let me explain something. I never had a desire to be a poet. I came from a very poor, tough section of the Bronx, and poets were sissies. Who knows what a poet is? But when you come from the very bottom and you're self-educated or streetwise, the word for a poet is, he's a fruit or a sissy, whatever, a guy carrying a plow, with a long coat on. Who knows what a sissy is? Hey, it's okay, Snuffie! [Eddie's canine companion, about whom Jack later wrote, in a letter to Eddie: "Snuffie is not a dog!"]
EW:
Keep talking, Jack, I'll get his bone.

Six years later I was living in NYC, running a store (SohoZat) & doing the performance/art scene. Into the store one day comes this tipsy, laughing-eyed, dangling-cigarette, wearing an ash covered pea-coat. The cigarette says, "I love underground comix, my favorite is Giser." We got to talking & it turned out that the voice across the hall came from Jack. He needed a place to stay, so he slept on a cot in the back of the store. We (my partner Alan Fliegel & I) had to lock him in at night because of the gate that closed over the store. Each morning, for about a week & a half, the gate would go up in the morning & Jack would get his wake up call so we could open for business. He then found places to stay where he could come & go as he pleased.

http://www.remembertheatre.org/BUK-MICH.html
In 1968, Charles Bukowski was gaining minor celebrity with “Notes From a Dirty Old Man,” a column in the leftist magazine Open City . Asked to edit a literary supplement, Bukowski selected a story by his friend, Jack Micheline Skinny Dynamite was an explicit short story about the sexual exploits of an underage girl. When it appeared, Open City publisher John Bryan was arrested on obscenity charges. Alan Ginsberg and Norman Mailer, among others, wrote letters of support and eventually the charges were dropped. The magazine did not survive the onslaught, but Bukowski and Micheline continued defending the outcasts and giving voice to the voiceless until their deaths. Bukowski died at 73, faxing poems from the hospital bed; Micheline died at the age of 68 riding a BART train in San Francisco. These unique American Voices are brought to life once again at A Theatre Under The Influence. Charles Bukowski , author of more than 45 books of poetry and prose, has become a literary legend with semi-autobiographical works such as Post Office and Women telling the trials and tribulations of the drinking man. When Hollywood made a movie of his life
