Remembering Beat Poet jack micheline. by Alan Kaufman. I mean, really care? .Just one more recollection of the fierce street poet jack micheline.
http://users.rcn.com/mindfld/micheline.html
Remembering Beat Poet Jack Micheline by Alan Kaufman We're all here, all the self-suiciding maniacs of the San Francisco poetry scene, with bitten off bits of each others ears still stuck between our wolfish teeth: Jack Hirschman, Harold Norse, Q.R.Hand, Gerald Nicosia, Bruce Isaacson just in from Nevada and now, for crying out loud, Michael MacClure who wouldn't give Micheline the time of day when he was alive has just walked in, humbly lowered himself to the floor and immedately sent several signals to Kush, tonight's organizer, to jump his name ahead of the peons on the sign-up list . . . In the downstairs reception area growling videos of Jack wailing verse as a screeching sax entertains the moochers and hanger-ons who really don't give a shit about some croaked old Beat poet: they're here for a free nosh on bagels and wine. Somehow one feels that Jack would have liked these folks best. At least they're more real then the famous phonies showing up, folks who once walked right past him when he was alive, broke, hungry and hawking his three buck chapbooks out in the rain under the marquee of the Roxie cinema, around the corner on Sixteenth Street. By now, about three hundred people have filled the upstairs hall. Jack could have sold a lot of books tonight. As cameras roll Kush kicks off with a convocational chant that wrings the heart. The wind has Jack, it goes. A lot of eyes in the place tear up, mine included for the poetry of death. Then Jack's old sax man mounts the stage, axe in hand. In the thirty years he'd played behind Micheline he says, Micheline would growl: "Sax man, when my hand goes up you play." "So let's imagine Jack's up here with me now" says the sax man "and his hand is raised for me to blow this one last time for him." The grieving memories of his horn turn the room into all the little jazz spots and dives where Jack broke indifferent hearts with the truth burning in his guts.

Spring 2001 REMEMBERING JACK MICHELINE Ray Freed I met the poet Jack Micheline in 1970 in New York City at Dr Generosity's, a saloon at 73rd and Second on the East Side. I waited tables there and helped run a Sunday afternoon reading series and was editor and publisher of the Dr`Generosity Press, which from 1969 through 1972 put out a number of books and broadsides of poetry.
Of all the poets who came through the Doctor's doors, and the list is long and impressive, Jack was the only one who was a full time poet. I mean that's all Jack did, be a poet. He had no regular job, didn't teach, and at the time was sleeping on the subway. For drink and food Jack would take a poem or two in typescript, make copies, staple the pages inside a brown folder, and on the cover write the poem's title with a marker. On the inside there was a cover page with the title and Jack's signature and the edition number, like This Is Copy 3 Of A Limited Edition Of 10 Copies, again`written by Jack with a marker. These productions he peddled for a few dollars each in saloons and on the street. Jack called them Midnight Special Editions.

(Photo Courtesy Myles Aronowitz CHAPTER FIFTEEN: JACKS A KING AND I'M THE INVISIBLE MAN I met Jack Micheline back in 1959, when I was researching my Beat Generation feature series for the New York Post. But by 1982, at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the publication of On the Road , promoted by Allen Ginsberg at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Jack didn't remember me at all. The trouble was I had never pretended to be a poet and poets were the only creatures Jack ever bothered recognizing. The way Allen had arranged things, I was supposed to introduce Jack at some panel on I now forget what topic. Allen figured that was a way to give each of his friends a shot at the spotlight, but Jack was insulted. Who the fuck was Al Aronowitz? Allen tried to bullshit Jack that he should be honored to have me introduce him. "He's the guy who introduced me to Dylan, Dylan to the Beatles and the Beatles to An historic

marijuana," Allen told him. "He also introduced Billie Holiday to LeRoi Jones and he introduced lots of other people to lots of other people."

John Thomas. RAGGED LION A TRIBUTE TO jack micheline EDITED BY JOHN BENNETT TheSmith Publishers Vagabond Press, 1999 605 E. 5th Ave., Ellensburg, WA 98926.

John Thomas RAGGED LION: A TRIBUTE TO JACK MICHELINE
EDITED BY JOHN BENNETT
Kerouac has a street named after him in North Beach, as does Larry Ferlinghetti. Jack Micheline, of course, has not. But in Ragged Lion he has received a marvelous volume of tribute and celebration. This is an unforgettable book. Some eighty people have contributed their thoughts about Jack, their memories and impressions from the 1950's until the very day of his death in 1997. Jack was a Brooklyn boy, born Harold Silver in 1929. He was in the Village by 1957. In 1958 he published his first poem as "Jack Micheline" in Yugen. Matt Gonzalez gives you a usable bio to start off Ragged Lion. Then poet John Bennett, who put the book together, tells how it came about. And from his introductory piece:
"Jack Micheline was more than a poet, a bard and a wandering minstrel. He was more than an artist and con man. He was Walt Whitman's wild child who-after forty years of defiantly dancing on the cutting edge of life-had not been broken, even though he had been rendered toothless, ragged, diabetic and frayed by a society that goes hard on those who don't kneel to reason, bow to the pragmatic, and prostrate themselves before authority." Then come the offerings, in prose and verse. Many of the names you will know: Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Hubert Selby, Jr., A. D. Winans, Charles Plymell, Michael McClure, Jack Hirschman, Neeli Cherkovski, Linda King. There is also "A Taste of Jack" himself (artwork, seven poems, and a story). Altogether 211 pages of truly great reading.

See February March , or April news. After one 2,000-mile road trip of mine, I literally got to the edge of the continent and stopped (and stayed). This picture is of Laguna Beach, in southern Orange County, California. I remember leaving the cold Midwest May 1997 and driving out here. It wasn't the first time I made that trip, and maybe some day I'll make it again. May is a good month to travel across the continental U.S. Temps warm up, some of the desert spring flowers may be in bloom, mountains are dotted and green, summer shows its early faceand if you're lucky you will miss the big summer vacation travelers. That May, Highway 40 (the big one) wasn't too crowded. I met some campers and bikers who were enjoying the stretch. This month's news focus will be On the Road , with special features of two beats' thoughts of on the road (one of the book, and the other of the road itself). Quote of the month: Mountaineers climb peaks for the great view, the cooperation and comradeship, the lively hardship - but mostly because it puts you out there where the unknown happens where you encounter surprise. -Gary Snyder

    Ragged Lion feedback
"Ragged Lion is the best memorial volume, consisting of heartfelt comments in verse and prose by colleagues, friends and admirers, famous and not, that I have ever read...Jack (Micheline) really was the heart, or maybe the groove of the Beats, and one of their last survivors..."

"I couldn't put it down. It was like a living thing in my hands, wriggling like a snake, cracking like thunder, psychedelic, everything flashing without drugs, and I could not put it down. When I stood up I could barely walk! But I had to go back to the book, to this vitality that speaks straight to the soul, this life that sings its song in defiance of everything, this ragged, lovely lion. You've done an incredible, incredible thing in putting this book together....In the world of art I've seen mighty fine stuff that has stretched, sharpened and enriched my mind, lifted my heart and filled my soul. I've never seen stuff more life-giving, more radiant than this book."
