Editors Select Peter Michelson, editor. The Extant Poetry and Prose of Max Michelson, Imagist (1880-1953), Edwin Mellen Press, 2000. NDR contributor Peter Michelson has edited and introduced the poems and prose of his grandfather, Max, who was one of the original Imagists and associated with Hariet Monroe and Poetry magazine between 1915 and 1921. Following the elegant foreword by Michael Anania, Michelson writes a moving forty page biographical and autobiographical essay which tells the sad story of Max's lifehe was interned in a mental hospital from 1921 until his death in 1953and Peter's thirty year attempt to recover what he could find of Max's work. The poems are well worth recovering and Michelson's story of the search for information about his grandfather's troubled life is fascinating. Fanny Howe, Selected Poems , University of California Press, 2000. One of the first three volumes in the New California Poetry series edited by Robert Hass, Calvin Bedient and Brenda Hillman, this selection is the best possible introduction to Fanny Howe's work. Less radically experimental than the work of her sister, Susan Howe, these spare and rather Dickinsonian poems grow on one. The long concluding cycle, "O'Clock," is particularly impressive. Other books in the first group of selections for the UC series are by Carol Snow and Mark Levine. Christopher Middleton

Rural Clay County, South Dakota Lat: 43°03'43"N, Lon: 96°49'28"W
T95N R51W Section 12 Contributed by Brian Hass, Dec 13, 2001 [ brian_m_hass@hotmail.com ]. Total records = 268. The cemetery can be reached by traveling a mile and a half south along 469th Avenue from South Dakota's Highway 46. The cemetery is at the east end of a dirt road called Glenwood Street.
St. Peter's Cemetery was started on October 1, 1890, when friends gathered to established the Danish cemetery. The original land for the cemetery was donated by Asmus Ebsen. An additional acre of land on the cemetery's south side was later donated by Jim Johnson. The first burial was reported to have been that of a nine year old girl named Marie Ebsen, who died from diptheria.
On July 18, 1908, an organizational meeting was held with Martin Ebsen as chairman. During this meeting, five Trustees were elected; and, articles of incorporation were adopted. In 1909, four dollars were spent on a caretaker. In 1913, lots sold for ten dollars each. In 1961, additional ground for the cemetery was purchased from Reynold and Loreen Ebsen, and Harry and Louise Johnson.

    2003 Benjamin Franklin Medal
in Chemistry Robin M. Hochstrasser, Ph.D.
    Donner Professor of Physical Sciences
    Department of Chemistry
    University of Pennsylvania
    Philadelphia, PA
Citation: Dr. Hochstrasser is awarded the 2003 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Chemistry for pioneering the development of ultrafast and multi-dimensional spectroscopies, and their applications to gain fundamental molecular-level understanding of the dynamics in complex systems (condensed phases and biomolecules), including energy transfer in solids, reaction mechanisms in liquid solutions, the binding of small molecules on hemoglobin, and the observation of structural changes in proteins. Robin M. Hochstrasser has made outstanding and pioneering contributions to virtually all of the areas of physical chemistry, chemical physics, and biology, where modern laser techniques have been utilized. He has changed the way chemists think about the motions of atoms in molecules. His mentoring of students and postdoctoral students is impressive when measured by either their numbers or, more importantly, by their subsequent accomplishments.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Hochstrasser earned his B.S. degree in applied chemistry from the Heriot-Watt University in 1952, and a Ph.D. from Edinburgh University in 1955. He served on the faculty of the University of British Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania, where he has been the Donner Professor of Physical Science since 1982. He also is director of the Regional Laser and Biotechnology Laboratories at Penn, a position he has held since 1978.

I am writing to inform you that, during this period between academic years, there will be a change of management at the Scholars Programme. The current Dean, Professor George Landow, has been on leave for the past semester due to his commitments at Brown University in the US. Given these commitments at Brown, it is best for the Programme to have a new Dean. An international search to fill this position has begun. In the meantime, I have been appointed Interim Dean, and A/P Peter Pang and Dr Stephanie Rupp have been appointed Vice Dean and Assistant Dean respectively. These appointments will take effect from June 1. I am a geographer, and concurrently Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. A/P Peter Pang is a mathematician while Dr Stephanie Rupp is an anthropologist.
