May 6, 1906 I am too tired to think. I have been working on the stone wall all day, because the earthquake doesn't come this way and my walls will stand till the cows come home. Were I to rebuild San Francisco, I would put all that and San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Jose, Milpitas, Alameda, Oakland, and Berkeley, all in one broad city of one and two-story houses as in the City of Mexico, and I'd call the whole bunch San Francisco. The birds hid when the earthquake came. My chapel was open at the time. It is always open except when strangers come and I have to shut them out, but I was lying in bed after five and wide awake, for I always go to bed with the birds and get up with the birds, and the first I knew my cattle began to low and my cats came into my chapel, and I thought there might be a strange dog. I got up, and looked out for the dog, but it was nothing of the sort. The cats were under my great brass bed and I never witnessed such stillness. I lay down again and then the sun burst over the hills and San Francisco was silver and gold. The streets seemed wide, bright and steep, and I've never seen the city so large, but the stillness was terrible and the light was unnatural, and then two little talented birds came into the chapel and a humming bird out of the apple tree came in and there was a bump and a thump as if I were in a small boat bumping against a wharf.

Up in Joaquin Miller Park, a series of projects will expand public uses in the open space between Woodminster Cascade and Joaquin Miller's historic cabin, and will enlarge and rebuild restrooms at Woodminster Theatre. We won support from the City Council to include $475,000 in the 2001-03 budget for these projects.
Woodminster Theatre has been producing a summer series of outdoor American musical theater since 1967. This popular summer spot has a large and loyal audience, many of whom enjoy picnics in Joaquin Miller Park prior to the show. This year, its 35th anniversary season, Woodminster produced "Carousel" in July, and is presenting "Barnum" in August and "My Fair Lady" in September. Call the theatre at 531-9597 for show and ticket information.
The new native plant nursery, the cascade demonstration garden and tot lot will make this unique area of Joaquin Miller Park even more appealing for weekend strolls, family gatherings and special events. For more information, read the Oakland Business Review, the

The photos here were taken in Joaquin Miller Park, which is overseen by the City of Oakland. Among many great things about this park is the fact that mountain biking is permitted on most singletrack trails, and mountain bikers are not treated like pond scum (as they unfortunately are in many other Bay Area open spaces). The bad thing is that a few reckless mountain bikers do tend to abuse the privilege by riding off legal trails, threatening to lose us all the privilege of riding there. We law-abiding cyclists are in the process of concerted efforts to bring those renegades in line through an information campaign (headed up by the Bicycle Trail Council of the East Bay, whose web site can be viewed at www.btceastbay.org ). If that fails, we will be forced to kick their butts! Meanwhile, we are still enjoying the park's multi-use approach, where most hikers, cyclists, joggers, dogs and other users tend to get along just fine.

"Joaquin Miller, Poet of the Sierras, and once an Oregon resident, visited Lewis and Clark Exposition today and was greeted by a throng of admirers, more than 2,000 strong, which assembled in and around the building. "Mr. Miller gave a short address in which he praised the state's natural resources and its people. If he retains any bitterness resulting from the treatment he received as a resident of this state, he concealed the fact, and was geniality itself. A banquet in his honor will be held this evening." Back to: School Recommendations and Oakland Public Schools Jan 2003 We are very happy with Joaquin Miller School! We currently have a third grader there, and our second daughter will be entering kindergarten in the fall. Oakland teachers are paid relatively well (compared to other Bay Area school districts), and because Joaquin Miller is considered to be a very good public school, it attracts some excellent teachers. We have been particularly impressed that the principal and teachers take a lot of care assigning students to classes and teachers, so that the students get the most out of each grade level. There is a strong sense of community at the school and a lot of parent participation in the form of fundraising and also volunteering in the class room. The school's principal is extremely active, and is a strong leader and compassionate person. The PTA organizes fundraising for student enrichment, teacher assistants, equipment for the school, special assemblies, etc. The fall auction, a walkathon, and various other fun activities during the school year raise a substantial amount of money for the school. There is a computer lab, and good library, and a new play structure. The PTA also offers extra classes (for a fee) that children can take before or after school; examples are spanish, music, additional science and art classes, as well as chess ecology club, etc.

by Joe Scarborough, meet director This fall, we got our 15 minutes of fame when "Bay Area Backroads," the popular local show that airs on KRON-TV (Channel 4 in most areas), asked to film an event. Unfortunately, they could only shoot during the week, so we put together this Tuesday outing, which drew a surprisingly large (and exciting) crowd - everyone from BAOC stalwarts to a second-grade class to the Oakland SWAT team! Even on-camera host Doug McConnell ran a short course. Below are the complete results The resulting 6-minute segment gave a very good presentation and explanation of orienteering. It first aired on Sunday, November 29, and was rerun several times, in addition to appearing on the Bay Area Backroads website . (We also have videotapes available for outreach events and other activities.) Also check out the photo page I put together describing the event.
Designing Courses for Spectactors and Cameras
There are two problems with orienteering as a spectator sport: It takes place in the forest, for the most part out of sight; and competitors are separated in time and distance. My solution was to devise a format that provided a lot of close-in action and a measure of head-to-head competition without the problem of following. I figured that a spectator-friendly event would suit the cameras as well as show that orienteering is indeed a legitimate sport, not just the offbeat pastime too often presented on the feature page.

National Orienteering Day "Come and Try It" event
Oakland, CA
Saturday, May 4, 2002
by Ian Tidswell , meet director We had a great turnout for the National Orienteering Day event in Oakland - over 200 participants, with 75% of them novices. From the beautiful weather, interesting courses, and comments, perhaps we will see a few of them back out again soon! The WHITE course , featuring fairly straightforward navigation, was the most popular course. The course was longer than usual, but there were no complaints. Pat McLaughlin tore around the course in 20 minutes - excellent job! Most others took longer to savor the course. The YELLOW course , with slightly more challenging navigation and a bit more climb, was my personal favorite. It featured great views across the Bay to San Francisco and the Golden Gate and toured most of the monuments in the park. Pat was also fastest on this course, but no one took longer than 1-1/2 hours for this or the white course. The ORANGE course was longer, steeper, and more challenging. It visited the upper part of the park with the open redwood forests. Wyatt Riley spent the least time enjoying this course - less than 35 minutes.
    A couple of interesting pieces of analysis:
  • 40% of beginners traveled 10 miles or less to the event, and 80% traveled 25 miles or less.

Behind him lay the gray Azores,
Behind the Gates of Hercules;
Before him not the ghost of shores;
Before him only shoreless seas.
The good mate said: "Now must we pray,
For lo! the very stars are gone.
Brave Admiral, speak, what shall I say?"
"Why, say : 'Sail on! sail on! and on!'"
"My men grow mutinous day by day;
My men grow ghastly, wan and weak." The stout mate thought of home; a spray Of salt wave washed his swarthy cheek. What shall I say , brave Admiral, say, If we sight naught but seas at dawn?" "Why, you shall say at break of day, 'Sail on! sail on! sail on! and on!'" They sailed and sailed, as winds might blow, Until at last the blanched mate said: "Why, now not even God would know Should I and all my men fall dead. These very winds forget their way, For God from these dread seas is gone. Now speak, brave Admiral, speak and say" He said: "Sail on! sail on! and on!" They sailed. They sailed. Then spake the mate: "This mad sea shows his teeth tonight.
