Cross Plainsman's Journal "exegi monumentum aere perennius"
~ INTRODUCTION ~
This ezine journal will explore aspects of Robert E. Howard's works, their bibliography, and why they endure, why they are remarkable, why they still strike a cord after 70 years. Howard himself regarded his efforts as "hack work" although he was proud of the fact that he brought literature to central Texas. He didn't then realize how durable his work would be, like the post oaks that dot the landscape in that region. In the words of Horace (Odes III, XXX, 1) there is truth: exegi monumentum aere perennius - I have thrust up a monument more lasting than bronze. Horace was a poet in Rome, and in this statement he extols the durability of his poetry, the durability that imbues Howard's best work. In the words of Suetonius, there is also truth, in Caesar, XXXVII, 2. The famously crisp exclamation attributed to Caesar - Veni, vidi, vicit - I came, I saw, I conquered - provides a parallel most evident for Howard's vision to bring literature to his part of Texas.

The History of "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career"

by
Scotty Henderson
Two enthusiastic fans of Weird Tales and Robert E. Howard's Conan, in particular, worked out an outline of this famous barbarian's career based on the original stories they read in WT.

A note on the text:  This version of "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career" is the original, un-altered, and un-edited version as it first appeared in the Robert E. Howard fanzine, The Hyborian Age, published in 1938. Much effort has been made to ensure that the text is exactly as it appeared in the magazine, even typos were kept. Only the basic page layout (margins and word spacing) is different from the original. The essay was next published in parts between 1952 and 1954 for the Gnome Press books featuring Conan and edited by John D. Clark and L. Sprague de Camp: The Sword of Conan King Conan The Coming of Conan , 1953; and Conan the Barbarian , 1954 . Here, the essay was re-titled "An Informal Biography of Conan the Cimmerian" and excetpts were used as a bridge before and between each of the stories. It is interesting to note that "A Probable Outline of Conan's Career" was not published again in its original form until 35 years after the initial publication of the essay in The Hyborian Age. In this printing, which occured in Marvel's Savage Tales #2 in 1973, the original title was restored. The last time that this essay was prinited in its original form was in Marvel's Savage Sword of Conan #16, published in 1977. After this, the essay was somewhat emended (and even later, considerably altered) by L. Sprague de Camp, and retitled again "An Informal Biography of Conan the Cimmerian", with de Camp's name added as an author. Exerpts from this appear as the introductory matter before the stories in the Ace series of Conan books, and can also be found in

37. ANOTHER CHRONOLOGY
His only discussion of Conan's chronology that I have found is his letter to JohnD. Clark and P. schuyler miller, which was published in CONAN, pp. 1620.

ANOTHER CHRONOLOGY
by Kevin Miller
from Amra, vol. 2, no. 59, February 1973
I've finally done it, finally gotten up enough courage to cross swords with the chroniclers of Conan! I believe that the order of Conan's adventures, in the early years of wandering, is not as heretofore believed. My two conclusions are simply that:
1) "The Frost Giant's Daughter" (FD) is the first Conan tale, i.e., it records his earliest adventure abroad.
2) "The God in the Bowl" (GB) is also out of sequence, since it should be listed as following "Rogues in the House" rather than preceding it.
I also have some dark thoughts on "The Black Stranger" ("The Treasure of Tranicos") and a question why it doesn't precede "The Pool of the Black One," since "The Black Stranger" ends with Conan embarking with the Barachan pirates in Howard's original. I suspect the problem here lies in how Conan got to the beginning point of the story. Since I haven't studied the later tales as much, I'll leave it at that. In defending my two audacious conclusions, I appeal to Robert E. Howard himself. His only discussion of Conan's chronology that I have found is his letter to John D. Clark and P. Schuyler Miller, which was published in CONAN, pp. 16-20. I draw on this heavily.
