Schuyler Miller and Dr. John D. Clark, published in The Hyborian Age (1938), and on the expanded version of this essay, An Informal Biography of Conan the Cimmerian, by P. Schuyler Miller, John D. Clark, and L. Sprague de Camp, published in Amra, vol. 2, no. 4, (1959), by G.H. Scithers. From the Introduction by L. Sprague de Camp This story deals with the adventures of Conan and Conn between Conan the Avenger, in which Conan recovered his queen of a year from the sorcerer Yah Chieng, and Conan of the Isles, in which the aging monarch abdicated his throne to set out for one last grand adventure in the unknown West. At the time of the present stories, Conan is nearing sixty. Save for the scars of many brawls and battles, which crisscross his mighty frame, one would take him for a much younger man. True, his square-cut mane of coarse, black, straight hair and the fierce black mustache, which he has assumed in deference to Aquilonian fashions, show traces of gray and his skin is becoming leathery. But while he is a little stiffer and slower than in his long-past youth, the strength of his massive thews is still that of two ordinary men.

"A bad writer, if he writes enough, will come up with a good passage, a memorable character, a remarkable insight. It is a statistical necessity. What then are we to make of a writer who produces a whole book and never does it - not once? ... There is in The Stainless Steel Rat an embarrassment of scenes and situations, adventures, escapes, encounters, gimmicks and gadgets ... It's all there - the beginning, the middle, the end; you know who's going to win and who will lose. The protagonist ... is as omnipotent as Mike Hammer, and as bruisable, and as indestructible, so where is the suspense? And always, always, Mr. Harrison tells me, he does not show me..."

"It is Harrison at his best and quite entertaining, though readers who get no thrill out of technological problem-solving may be bored. The literary gimmick of the book is that it is written in the style of a 19th century novel and the culture and language of the characters are from that period. The implicit premise here, dubious but necessary for the book, is that technological change need not lead to social or cultural change, which results in such charming anachronisms as gold-plated atomic-powered locomotives, a sexist and class-conscious Victorian society existing amidst sophisticated technology, electric-powered hansoms, and regally-appointed, gigantic airships. We never see the underside of this society, but as it comes through in the book, we would have been better off if old George [Washington] had indeed lost."

The Angenot-Khouri Bihliography of Prehistoric Fiction:
    Additions, Corrections, and Comment
The impressive "International Bibliography of Prehistoric Fiction" by Marc Angenot and Nadia Khouri (in SFS No. 23) is almost equally impressive for what it omits. How fragmented SF scholarship is still! Perhaps no one in the US could have compiled their list of Continental sources, and few their Victoriana. On the other hand, no US researcher would have failed to check for reprints in Contento's Index, no properly raised Anglo-Saxon would have omitted Kipling's juveniles or the horrid fate of Huxley's Fifth Earl of Gonister, and not the most amateurish filler-writer for fanzines could have forgotten Cleve Cartmill's archetypally Nietzschean "The Link" (reprinted from ASF in Adventures in Time and Space Given the number of addenda and corrigenda that follow, the authors may need to tighten their topic further. Can "prehistoric fiction" feature primitive humanoids beyond Tellus-Le Guin's green Athsheans, De Camp's tailed Krishnans, the Yahoos of Davidson's "And Now Let Us Sleep"? If the cut-off line runs between Stone and Bronze Ages, what about Paleo-Indians or even non-metal-using foraging societies today? Nay, what of that first citizen of the Pacific Northwest, beloved Bigfoot? All four yeti/sasquatch stories listed below (by Aandahl, Brown, Cotter, and Pangborn) raise the significant issue of miscegenation, and no doubt they are only the top of the iceberg.

Famous Cousins Page Back to [ HOME This is the most light-hearted page of our website because it is rather humorous to list famous cousins as if they somehow make us more important....which is absurd because...
  • If you go back far enough you can be related to anyone you want.
  • If you go back very far, the blood connection gets pretty thin.
  • If you lay claim to great relatives, then you have to claim the bad ones too.
  • You can drop a thousand famous names, but if you're a jerk, you're still a jerk. One last note, I got the idea for this Famous Cousins page from the web page of one Fulkerson family. And wouldn't you know it, we're distantly related!!
    TEDDY ROOSEVELT
became the Republican vice president of William McKinley in 1900. Several months later McKinley was assassinated making Roosevelt the 26th president of the US and the youngest at age 42. Teddy Roosevelt is probably best remembered (1) for leading the RoughRiders in the Spanish-American War, (2) for "taking" Panama to build the Panama Canal, (3) as an avid outdoorsman and conservationist who encouraged wise use of natural resources, (4) as one of the greater presidents deserving of a spot on Mt. Rushmore, and (5) for sparing the life of a bear cub on a hunting trip such that stuffed-toy bears are now called "Teddy bears." Relationship Dennis is Teddy's 8th cousin twice removed (via Rosecrans line)

    Astounding SF Golden Age Authors
This is a list of authors from the the Golden Age of Science Fiction. To qualify for the list, authors must have at least fifteen publications in the U.S. pulp magazines from 1939 to 1943, including at least two in John W. Campbell 's Astounding Science Fiction . My intention is to eventually illustrate the list with covers from the pulp magazines of the time and to provide links to bibliographies for each author. But the work progresses only slowly as my hobby (and besides, I'm having too much fun re-reading the works to spend too much time on these pages).
