Notes From A Journeyman Writer: November 8, 1998
by Steve Miller, staff writer, Member SFWA Working Writer Last time I wrote about my determination to be a writer, and how that took me off to a Clarion Writing Workshop specifically, Clarion West, in 1973. When I arrived at that workshop I'd been multiply published in other fields but not in SF. And to some at that workshop, that meant I wasn't a writer. I mention this because over the last year I've discovered a rather insidious side to publishing, something that is perhaps an expansion of that attitude: the side of publishing that wishes to equate the fact that someone is "not currently in print" with failure. There's an added assumption, and that is that a "working writer" is a writer with current credits in a particular field, so that an award winning reporter or non-fiction author might not be considered a working writer by, say, a writer of fantasy. I, alas, do have a line I draw in the matter. I tend to think that paid publication makes a professional writer. I, for example, have been paid to write greeting card verse, to write TV commercials, and to to write short stories. Just because I'm not currently writing greeting card verse doesn't mean I can't; just because my latest short story hasn't found a publisher doesn't mean it won't.

Welcome to a collection of pages that are devoted to things I enjoy and to the people who have enjoyed the things I've written over the years.
If you're here by accident, allow me to introduce myself. I am a writer of roleplaying game material and sci-fi and fantasy fiction. Most of my work has been published through TSR and Wizards of the Coast, and I am best known for contributions to the 'Ravenloft' and 'Dragonlance' properties. I have, however, done work for just about all the top roleplaying game publishers.
Please feel free to poke around the pages here. Hopefully, you'll find something to amuse you! (By the way, the drawing to the right is by John Mangrum, friend and collaborator. I think he captured the inner me.) Steve's Randomly Selected Thoughts of the Week Guest thought of the week, by Lou Dobbs of CNN: The government and media for the past nine months have called this a war against terror. So have we here. But terror is not the enemy. It is what the enemy wants to achieve. So on this broadcast, we are making a change... in the interests of clarity and honesty. The enemies in this war are radical Islamists who argue all non-believers in their faith must be killed. They are called Islamists. That's why we are abandoning the phrase, "War Against Terror". Let us be clear. This is not a war against Muslims or Islam. It is a war against Islamists and all who support them. If ever there were a time for clarity, it is now. We hope our new policy is a step in that direction.

In 1949, a young engineer named Ralph Baer was given an assignment to build a television set. He wasn't supposed to build just any television set, but one that would be the absolute best of all televisions. This was not a problem for Baer, but he wanted to go beyond his original assignment and incorporate some kind of game into the set. He didn't know exactly what kind of game he had in mind, but it didn't really matter because his managers nixed the idea. It would take another 18 years for his idea to become a reality, and by that time there would be other people to share in the glory, like Willy Higinbotham, who designed an interactive tennis game played on an oscilloscope, and Steve Russell, who programmed a rudimentary space game on a DEC PDP-1 mainframe computer. And then there was also Nolan Bushnell, who played that space game and dreamed of a time when fairground midways would be filled with games powered by computers. Today, with interest in classic games gaining steam once again, players of video games are reminded of the rich history of the industry. Crave's Asteroids 64 is a modern version of a game that came out in 1979. And the original Asteroids was merely an updated version of Nolan Bushnell's Computer Space, which was really a jazzed-up copy of Steve Russell's Spacewar. Space Invaders, Centipede, Frogger, and Pong are once again on store shelves, and Pong is but a polished variant of the game Willie Higinbotham displayed on his oscilloscope.

Lowering base just south of Ardmore Oklahoma Same lowering base as above, now a developing wall cloud. The storm was moving fast along with waning daylight and I was not able to keep up with it. I caught up with it late as this storm really intensified and produced several funnels over Madill, Oklahoma. I saw two of those funnels, but no way to really get a good night shot. Headed west towards Wichita Falls on Hwy. 82 to intercept a couple of supercells. The northern storm is shown below.

    Steve Miller's Dragonlance Pages
From 1995 to 1999, Steve worked on Dragonlance meta-story direction and specific print products, along with Doug Niles, Harold Johnson, Stan!, Sue Cook and Miranda Horner. When Wizards of the Coast aquired TSR, the influential Dragonlance authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman once again took charge of Dragonlance story direction, and Steve soon moved onto other things. Steve's been a long-time fan of the Dragonlance setting, so although he's done with it professionally, he still loves the property. Thanks to the generocity of Wizards of the Coast, he has been permitted to establish this non-official Dragonlance section which will feature a mixture of fan efforts, unpublished Dragonlance writings by Steve, and materials by Steve drawn from out-of-print Dragonlance products. We hope you'll find something here that you'll enjoy!

the MILESAGO interviews Dave Miller Dave was interviewed by Steve Kernohan on 26 November 1999, on Steve's weekly music program For What It's Worth, which airs every Friday from 8-10pm on Stereo 974 (97.4 FM) in Melbourne. We are indebted to Steve and Dave for permission to transcribe the interview.
[The program opens with the title track from the 1970 Dave Miller-Leith Corbett LP Reflections Of A Pioneer Steve Kernohan: We opened the show tonight with a track from an album from 1970. The song was called Reflections Of A Pioneer, which is the name of the album, and it's by a couple of gentlemen, Dave Miller and Leith Corbett. Dave Miller - name sound familiar? Well, Dave's with me in the studio tonight and he's here to talk about his career in music, right through to that point when that album was released back in 1970, and maybe beyond - and he's here right now. Good evening, Dave! Dave Miller: Hello Steve, and hello to your listeners. SK : Great to have you along. DM : Thank you. I'm looking forward to this, I hasten to add! SK : Oh good, good, good ... Dave, I'm not an expert on the Dave Miller Set.
