Essay on the meaning of mishima's suicide.

Yukio Mishima
Sacred Visons of Splendor
Yukio Mishima always had a rather unusual life. As a boy growing up in Japan, Mishima was different than others his age. He seemed to be not like a child, rather, he carried an expression of self-determination and stoicism. Once, as a child, the romantic Mishima flipped through a book of paintings, stopping to study one: "St. Sebastian", which depicted the saint with arrows hanging from his torso and his hands tied to a limb. Mishima was so excited over this picture that he had his first encounter with masturbation as he viewed it (Mishima would later pose for a St. Sebastain-like picture). Mishima studied Karate and became a devout beleiver in the power of Japan and its emperor, so he joined an extreme group called the Tatenokai. Within this group Mishima started his own group of rebels. On November 25, 1970 Mishima's band of rebels (four students), dressed in full uniform, visited the office of General Mashita. The General happily greeted Mishima and his men, but Mishima's demeanor suddenly changed to seriousness as he and the students began to gag and tie up the General and baricade the office. Guards could see through a peephole in the door what Mishima was doing and broke down the door, but Mishima, armed with his sword, attacked the soldiers, almost severing a sergeant's hand off. Mishima's men took the General hostage and threatened to kill him if there were anymore intrusions, meanwhile Mishima demanded that the Jietai Soldiers be assembled in the front of the building.

Mishima, Yukio [y OO E O E
Pronunciation Key
Mishima, Yukio , Japanese author, b. Tokyo. His original name was Kimitake Hiraoka and he was born into a samurai family. Mishima wrote novels, short stories, essays, and plays. He appeared on stage in some of his plays as well as directing and starring in films. During World War II he worked in an aircraft factory. Upon graduation (1947) from Tokyo Univ., he served a brief time in the finance ministry before devoting himself entirely to writing. Mishima and the youthful members of his Tatenokai [Shield Society] practiced physical fitness and the ancient arts of the samurai, e.g., karate and swordsmanship, attempting to return to the ideals of Japan under Imperial rule. His tetralogy The Sea of Fertility traces the fading of the old Japan in the first decade of the 20th cent. and continues through the aftermath of World War II. The individual novels of this group are: Spring Snow (tr. 1972), Runaway Horses (tr. 1973)

"Schule des Begehrens"
Benoit Jacquot

Biography
Yukio Mishima
Writer Japan Born 23 Aug 1925
Died 25 Nov 1970
Yukio Mishima was born in Tokyo. When he graduated from the Peers' School in 1944 he received a citation from the Emperor as the highest honour student. He then attended the Tokyo Imperial University School of Jurisprudence until 1947. Starting in his teens, he became a prolific writer of great diversity, whose works include some 15 novels (many of which have been made into films), 33 plays, two travel books, numerous essays and countless short stories. Among his books published in England are 'After the Banquet', 'Confessions of a Mask', 'Forbidden Colours' and 'The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea'. 'The Sound of Waves', published in Japan under the title Shiosai, won the 1954 Shinchosha literary prize.
Mishima revered and mastered the martial arts of Japan. He was a devotee of body-building exercises and also accomplished in the arts of kendo and karate. He always firmly upheld the traditions of Japan's imperial past - a legacy from his samurai forbears - and believed that these values were being eroded by Western materialism.
On 25 Nov 1970, at the peak of his brilliant literary career, he astonished the world by committing ritual suicide (seppuku) by disembowelment. Mishima had written much about suicide and early death and often expressed the wish to die young. His last work was the tetralogy, 'The Sea of Fertility' which is published by Penguin. This comprises 'Spring Snow', 'Runaway Horses', T'he Temple of Dawn' (in two parts) and 'The Decay of the Angel' and was finally completed on the morning before his death. Just before his suicide he wrote to friends that he felt empty, having put everything he thought or felt about life into this mammoth undertaking, later hailed as a masterpiece. His writing has been widely acclaimed, compared to that of Proust, Gide and Sartre, and Arthur Miller once said of him that 'He had the economy of means to create enormous myths - his novels are compressed visions.'

WELCOME TO THE YUKIO MISHIMA WEB PAGE
This web page is devoted to the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. November 25th 2000 marked the 30th anniversary of his death. Yukio Mishima was one of the most accomplished and celebrated writers to come out of post-war Japan. He has been compared to Ernest Hemingway and Marcel Proust. The subject matter of his books and the specifics of his life caused him to be the source of a great deal of controversy, both in Japan and throughout the world. He has been the subject of several works of literary criticism,at least one biography, and his life was the subject of a film by the filmmaker Paul Schraeder entitled "Mishima:a life in four chapters" .Mishima was the author of hundreds of plays, stories, essays and novels, but he was best known as the author of the "Sea of Fertility Tetralogy". Although he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for literature three times, the ideas behind both his writings and his life are greatly misunderstood in the west.
