Esa hermana fue prácticamente la única profesora que tuvo en toda su vida. Entre 1905-1906 comenzó a trabajar como ayudante en las escuelas rurales de Compañía Baja y La Cantera, en los alrededores de La Serena. Al año siguiente se le nombra secretaria del Liceo de niñas de La Serena. Carecía del título de profesora, por lo tanto, rindió un "Examen de Competencia" (1912), tras el cual hizo clases en los liceos de niñas de Antofagasta y Los Andes. Se dio a conocer como poeta al ganar los Juegos Florales de Santiago, con sus "Sonetos de la muerte", inspirados en el suicidio de su gran amor, el joven Romelio Ureta, los firmó como "Gabriela Mistral", seudónimo que desde entonces la acompañaría toda su vida.

Gabriela Mistral would return only occasionally to her beloved Chile, embarking on a life of international travel and diplomacy. Over the years, however, Mistral remained in close contact with friends and acquaintances who were always geographically distant, filling the space with vast and varied correspondence. Her letters illustrate the different facets of Mistral's persona and the extraordinary quality and variety of her prose writing. Mistral's personal correspondence also demonstrates the poet's rich lexicon and fluid syntax, giving the text an unique oral element similar to her poetry.

GABRIELA MISTRAL VIDA Y OBRA 1889 El 7 de abril nace la poetisa en la ciudad de Vicuña, cuarta región. Sus padres fueron Juan Jerónimo Godoy y Petronila Alcayaga, quienes la bautizaron con el nombre de Lucila. 1892 Lucila tiene tres años cuando su padre abandona la familia y se dedica a recorrer tierras. 1904 Colabora en el periódico Coquimbo, de La Serena, utilizando los seudónimos de "Alguien", "Soledad" y "Alma". 1905 A los quince años empieza a trabajar, ejerciendo una ayudantía en la Escuela de La Compañía, aldea vecina a Vicuña. 1906 Tiene 17 años. Conoce a Romelio Ureta, empleado de Ferrocarriles, quien fue el amor de su vida. Durante este período, Lucila sirve una plaza de maestra en la escuela de La Cantera. 1907 Escribe para los periódicos La Voz de Elqui y La Reforma. 1908 Figura en la antología Literatura Coquimbana de L. Carlos Soto Ayala, en la cual éste le dedica un breve estudio y selecciona tres prosas poéticas de la autora: "Ensoñación", "Junto al mar" y "Carta íntima". 1909 El 25 de noviembre, a los 26 años de edad, se suicida en Coquimbo Romelio Ureta. En sus bolsillos se encontró una tarjeta con el nombre de Lucila Godoy. Ella es inspectora en el Liceo de Señoritas de La Serena.

Participa en la Asamblea de Las Naciones Unidas representando a Chile. En 1954 viene a Chile y se le tributa un homenaje oficial. Regresa a los Estados Unidos. El Gobierno de Chile le acuerda en 1956 una pensión especial por la Ley que se promulga en el mes de noviembre. En1957, después de una larga enfermedad, muere el 10 de enero, en el Hospital General de Hempstead, en Nueva York. Sus restos reciben el homenaje del pueblo chileno, declarándose tres días de duelo oficial. Los funerales constituyen una apoteosis.
