I had determined to speak with him in the well-appointed bar of the hotel where he was staying, a place where I've spoken with many authors, including Bernard Cornwell Timothy Findlay and J.A. Jance "It's too noisy here," Mistry said, after an appraising look around. "Can we go somewhere more quiet?" Not one to begin with an author ill at ease, I led him upstairs to the convention level, where we found a couple of chairs in a quiet corner. I dragged a service tray between us where I propped my tape recorder, an analog device. Before we'd gotten started, we were joined by

Rohinton Mistry Cancels U.S. Book Tour Due to Racial Profiling November 05, 2002 This past weekend, Rohinton Mistry, one of Canada's most celebrated authors, announced that he was canceling the remainder of his U.S. book tour due to what he characterized as racial profiling in American airports. "He was singled out at airports because of the color of his skin," said Paul Bogaards, director of publicity for Knopf, Mistry's publisher. "This is the way of the world now, and, after a time, Rohinton Mistry became uncomfortable."
Mistry's latest book, Family Matters , which details the struggles of a father and his children in modern Bombay, was a Booker Prize nominee and a Book Sense September/October 2002 76 pick. Mistry is also the author of A Fine Balance , which was a March/April 2000 Book Sense 76 pick.
Mistry's troubles with American airport security began in early October, when he was conducting the first leg of his U.S. book tour promoting the novel, said Bogaards. Traveling with his wife, Mistry found that "he wasn't being stopped just once [at airports], he was being stopped two or three times," Bogaards told BTW . "This happened repeatedly. So, he decided to pull back. We support him fully in his decision."

This is a beautiful novel, totally engrossing, written from a profoundly humane perspective on the human condition. Terrible things happen - that's life - but throughout Mistry is careful to tell the truth about people: that even in moments of despair and degradation, human beings differ dramatically in their ability to love, to share, to recognize others as equals.

A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry
Rohinton Mistry manages to bring forth the horror and devastation wreaked by the Emergency in all its vividness through 'A Fine Balance'. The novel is both a commentary on the political and social environment of the time as well as a beautiful tragedy. The story is based in 1975 in an unidentified city near the sea in India, riddled with poverty and teeming with beggars. Mistry places four pivotal characters in this squalid city. Mrs. Dina Dalal, 40-ish, poor and widowed after only three years of marriage. Determined to remain financially independent and to avoid a second marriage, she takes in a boarder and two Hindu tailors to sew dresses for an export company. Maneck, is the son of an old school friend of Dina's who has been sent to college because the family business is failing; and the two tailors are Ishvar and his nephew Om, who have left their village in an effort to escape the repressive caste system. The novel revolves around the interactions between these four characters. Their dreams and ambitions and the trials that they must face in life in order to achieve these. For four months, these four characters become a family. Eating and sleeping together, sharing their dreams, meals and living space. Their relationships with each other transcend inter-caste problems and barriers of caste, religion and monetary status. The cramped apartment becomes a haven from the political and social turmoil of the time. The four face various unpleasant encounters and are repeatedly saved from these by a quaint character, the Beggarmaster. The backdrop of the novel through all this is the Emergency period and the callousness of Indira Gandhi's government.

Rohinton Mistry's Booker-shortlisted novel Family Matters has won this year's Kiriyama Pacific Rim prize. He shares the award, worth $30,000 (£19,000), with a non-fiction title, Pascal Khoo Thwe's The Land of Green Ghosts: A Burmese Odyssey. Mistry, a Bombay-born Toronto immigrant, was praised by the judges for the humour and compassion in his novel, which explores contemporary Bombay through the story of a family conflict caused when a cantankerous old man goes to live with his daughter.
