Bigger Picture John Cameron Mitchell "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" Interviewed by Jane Crowther updated 28th August 2001 How would you describe " Hedwig "? I think of it as a rock ‘n’ roll fairytale, a rock musical... And it’s my version of some of the films I grew up with like "Harold and Maude", "All That Jazz", and "Nashville". Where did you get your inspiration from? I had the Plato myth about the origins of love first and then there was an autobiographical element to it. My Dad was a US Army general in Berlin and Hedwig was based on a woman who was our babysitter. She was a German army wife but also a prostitute and provided the visual inspiration for Hedwig. A Marlene Deitrich style figure with big hair. Did you have to battle to keep your vision of "Hedwig" intact on screen? The battle was the budget but you always have to work within a budget. New Line completely supported my vision, I never had to do anything I didn’t want to. It’s purely about money, the more the budget, the more studios will interfere, so you have to understand that and choose to work on a smaller budget. Would you want to take on a big budget movie?

By Joshua Klein Though keyboard player Mitchell Froom made his inauspicious recording debut with The Key Of Cool , the re-titled soundtrack to 1982's cult science-fiction porn film Cafe Flesh , he has gone on to become one of the most sought-after record producers of our time. The list of artists with whom Froom has worked is impressive: It includes Los Lobos, Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, Paul McCartney, Cibo Matto, The Pretenders, Crowded House, Ron Sexsmith, Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, and Froom's wife, Suzanne Vega. Additionally, he is a member of The Latin Playboys, a band that also features his long-time engineer Tchad Blake and Los Lobos' David Hidalgo and Louie Perez. The Latin Playboys' second album ( Dose ) is slated for fall release, but in the meantime, Froom has recorded his first "proper" solo album, Dopamine, a collaboration with many of the big names that made him famous. The Onion recently spoke to Froom about his unique start, his production work, his new album, and life behind the scenes. O: So, how did you end up doing the soundtrack to a porn movie?

The Role of the Ideal Citizen: W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind BreeAnne Robertson One of the founding messages in W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind is that the ideal citizen must help bridge the gap between the dialectical tension of rural and urban environments; between society and the vast Canadian prairie. This connection is in attempt to find harmony within oneself and the world one lives in. In Mitchell's novel, the protagonist Brian leads the reader in and around his Saskatchewan town, allowing glimpses into the lives of the people who live there and the place they all share. Throughout Brian's growth, he learns a little every day. Both the natural world and the civilized world serve as tools to guide Brian to discover what he longs to understand: the "ultimate meaning of the cycle of life" and one's role within it (Mitchell preface). Brian, who is only four at the beginning of the novel, struggles to find clarity in his young life: Men do not understand how a thing which is torn in different directions comes into accord with itself – harmony in contrarity…. HERACLITUS. (Grace 117)
