Reviews of works by W.O. Mitchell by our Canadian Editor Zaheera Jiwaji
W.O. Mitchell , the only Canadian author known by his initials, was born William Ormond Mitchell on March 13, 1914 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The author's vivid descriptions of prairie life are based on his early years spent in the Canadian prairies.
Employed as the fiction editor for Maclean's in Toronto from 1948 to 1951, Mitchell also became known as a gifted teacher and taught creative writing at the University of Alberta and was Director of the Writing Division at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts. He soon became Writer-in-Residence at several universities: The University of Calgary, the University of Toronto's Massey College, York University in Toronto, and the University of Windsor.
In 1947, his first novel

Whether or not it is actually so, the people of Weyburn like to believe that when W.O. Mitchell of High River, Alberta wrote his series "Jake and the Kid", the setting of "Crocus", Saskatchewan was none other than Bill's hometown, Weyburn. Certainly "Who Has Seen the Wind", Bill's first novel (1947) was based on his childhood memories of the prairie where he grew up. Bill has become one of Canada's best known writers. The See-Through Man
by Pete Stampede Warren Mitchell will forever be linked with his character, or maybe that should be alter-ego, of bigoted, small-minded, loud-mouthed Alf Garnett, the comedically monstrous Cockney who dominated the ground-breaking series Till Death Us Do Part (BBC, 1965-75), later to be equally successfully (and controversially) transmogrified into All In The Family's Archie Bunker. Quite an achievement for the "sophisticated, left-wing Jewish actor," as playwright Peter Nichols once described him. Given Alf's suspicions of anything pertaining to the Left politically, Mitchell's repeated casting as a Soviet apparatchik (albeit one as daft as Brodny/Keller) in The Avengers is all the more ironic. He was born in London in 1926; his Russian-Jewish grandparents had fled to Britain in 1910. His real name is Warren Misell; he says he regrets anglicising it now, as if you remind people what your name is often enough, they'll remember eventually. During WW2, while serving in the Royal Air Force, he managed to get onto a six-month course at Exeter College, Oxford, alongside another would-be actor called Richard Burton; later biographies of Burton tended to overlook the fact that the university only made these short courses possible because most of the students were in the services, but it was still quite an achievement for the Jewish North Londoner, and Welsh coal-miner's son, respectively. After the war, Mitchell studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where

Renowned Cdn. photographer requests W.O. Mitchell memories
One of Canada's most renowned photographers, Courtney Milne, has been working on a new pictorial publication entitled, W.O. Mitchell Country. Milne has taken thousands of photos for the new book and is currently in the process of deciding which photos to publish. In addition, Milne is currently working on a 5,000-word advance to his new book and is asking local residents for submissions regarding their memories of W.O. Mitchell. The Mitchell recollections can be dropped off at the Weyburn Review, where Milne will pick them up later in the month. Milne will then interview the Mitchell-recollection authors as he intends to utilize their memories in the book's introduction. The submission deadline is Jan. 22.

John Cameron Mitchell
Boldly confronts mind-bending issues of gender and sexuality with his rock-and-roll fairy tale Hedwig and the Angry Inch By Bruce C. Steele Excerpted from The Advocate, Aug. 14, 2001, with added material not included in the magazine. For a gay working actor to keep working, there are certain rules. Stay closeted. Or, if you simply must And certainly never, ever stake your career on playing a semi-transsexual alcoholic in a homemade rock musical. John Cameron Mitchell has broken all these rules. His payback? A deal with Killer Films and New Line Cinema to adapt, direct, and star in the new movie version of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (opening July 20 from Fine Line Features), based on the stage musical he cowrote with composer and lyricist Stephen Trask. A shower of film festival awards. A few megabytes of gleeful reviews. Oh, and some magazine covers.

The biographers' intimate relationship with their subject can have advantages and disadvantages. Giving Mitchell so much free rein in telling his own story may appear risky for those concerned about the border between fact and fiction. Some of his humorous memories quoted from family interviews are no doubt apocryphal. But a deeper reality emerges from his personal version of events: Mitchell's self-construction from his childhood memories demonstrates the same creative process employed to construct his fictional stories.
From their dual perspectives as the family of an author of bestsellers and as university professors, the Mitchells had the difficult task of choosing their intended audience. Like Mitchell himself, who tried to bridge the gap between serious literature and popular culture, they have geared this biography to both the literary scholar and the popular audience of Mitchell's loyal readers. Their clear prose, thorough but unobtrusive documentation, and choice of Mitchell's own publisher, McClelland and Stewart, signify their effort to make this biography accessible to a wide range of readers. How exactly do the Mitchells succeed in satisfying two very different audiences?

Often thought of as a "cool" filmmaker, Haynes actually dramatizes in all of his films the ways in which our thoughts and feelings are constructed by the cultures we live in. Works like Superstar, Dottie Gets Spanked, Poison, and Safe Superstar Safe Velvet Goldmine, the world of glam rock, with all of its wild costumes, ornately composed music, and sexual fluidity, is recreated with loving care. W.O. Mitchell remembered
By Rob Knibbs
the Carillon
W.O. Mitchell, one of Canada's greatest known and loved writers, died in February of 1998. Since that time, many have paid homage to a man who has contributed so much to Canadian literature. Stuart McClain, of CBC Radio's The Vinyl Cafe, recently dedicated an entire show to the works of the troublemaking Mitchell boy from Weyburn. In late 1999, Barbara and Ormond Mitchell, W.O.'s eldest son and daughter-in-law, as well as Courtney Milne visited Regina to discuss their respective projects. They sat down with the Carillon to discuss the nature of their work. The Life of W.O. Mitchell : Beginnings to Who has seen the Wind 1914-1947 By Barbara and Ormond Mitchell
McClelland and Stewart Inc. The Life of W.O., a biography chronicling the life of W.O. Mitchell, was compiled by Orm and Barbara Mitchell. The volume begins at childhood and painstakingly moves through his young adulthood, ending at the writing of Who has Seen the Wind in 1947. The authors have had the privilege of being part of W.O.'s private life and have created a biography that reads like a celebration of the great writer's life. The biography looks at W.O.'s roots, showing a glimpse of his many childhood experiences. The intention is to give background to his writing based in these times. The information is occasionally overwhelming for the reader, minute details proving to be too much. The saving grace of the opening chapters is many pertinent excerpts from W.O.'s work. Adding colour to the dialogue, they come to life amongst the details of his childhood.

Sometimes years must pass before a classic, more particularly a Canadian classic achieves recognition. Happily this has not been the case with Who Has Seen the Wind , a re-creation of prairie boyhood that has been celebrated since its first appearance in 1947. The well-loved story of Brian O'Connal's early youth and of his growing awareness of pain, death and sorrow as well as of the richness and beauty of life that brings him to the brink of young manhood, has mellowed gracefully with the years. The present handsome edition is doubly to be treasured in that it has been illustrated by another son of the prairies, the notable Canadian artist William Kurelek. Eight full-page plates, as well as numerous pen-and-ink drawings, are worthy of a book that belongs in every library collection.
