    Opera
    Roméo et Juliette Charles Gounod

Opera in five acts. Music by Gounod, libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, after the Shakespeare play 'Romeo and Juliet' (1594). First performed Paris, 27 Apr 1867.
PROLOGUE Verona, fourteenth century. A chorus chants of the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets and of their children, the star-crossed lovers Roméo (tenor) and Juliette (soprano).
ACT I: At a masked ball at the Capulet palace, Juliette's arrival is eagerly awaited by her cousin Tybalt (tenor) and her suitor Paris. Capulet presents his daughter, the revelers exclaim at her beauty, and Juliette rhapsodizes on her joy. The host leads his guests off just as Roméo, a Montague, and his friends, all masked, steal into the ballroom intent on provoking a fight. Roméo has dreamed the night before, and Mercutio (baritone), one of his companions, launches into a song about Queen Mab, the mistress of dreams. Suddenly Roméo sees Juliette at a distance. As she waltzes around the room, singing of the freedom of youth, Roméo shyly approaches her, asking if his hand may touch hers. Tybalt returns just as Juliette tells her name to Roméo, who masks himself and rushes off. Tybalt identifies the intruder as Montague's son, but Capulet restrains him, ordering the party to continue.
ACT II Later that night, Roméo hides until Mercutio and other friends stop calling for him. Then he apostrophizes Juliette as the sun, the purest, brightest star. The girl steps forth on her balcony to lament her attraction for an enemy, and Roméo comes forward. The two ecstatically pledge their love but are interrupted by some Capulets searching for a Montague page. Then Roméo and Juliette tenderly bid each other good night.

previous: CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN - SHOWING THAT OLD FRIENDS MAY NOT ONLY APPEAR WITH NEW FACES, BUT IN FALSE COLOURS. THAT PEOPLE ARE PRONE TO BITE, AND THAT BITERS MAY SOMETIMES BE BITTEN.
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT - MR MONTAGUE AT HOME. AND MR JONAS CHUZZLEWIT AT HOME
There were many powerful reasons for Jonas Chuzzlewit being strongly prepossessed in favour of the scheme which its great originator had so boldly laid open to him; but three among them stood prominently forward. Firstly, there was money to be made by it. Secondly, the money had the peculiar charm of being sagaciously obtained at other people's cost. Thirdly, it involved much outward show of homage and distinction: a board being an awful institution in its own sphere, and a director a mighty man. 'To make a swingeing profit, have a lot of chaps to order about, and get into regular good society by one and the same means, and them so easy to one's hand, ain't such a bad look-out,' thought Jonas. The latter considerations were only second to his avarice; for, conscious that there was nothing in his person, conduct, character, or accomplishments, to command respect, he was greedy of power, and was, in his heart, as much a tyrant as any laureled conqueror on record.
But he determined to proceed with cunning and caution, and to be very keen on his observation of the gentility of Mr Montague's private establishment. For it no more occurred to this shallow knave that Montague wanted him to be so, or he wouldn't have invited him while his decision was yet in abeyance, than the possibility of that genius being able to overreach him in any way, pierced through his self-deceit by the inlet of a needle's point. He had said, in the outset, that Jonas was too sharp for him; and Jonas, who would have been sharp enough to believe him in nothing else, though he had solemnly sworn it, believed him in that, instantly.

Robert Southey, Specimens of the Later English Poets, with preliminary notices . 3 Volumes (London: Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme, 1807) Information about the collection: The poets included in the 3 volumes are arranged in the table of contents both in chronological (from year of death) and in alphabetical order. The titles of the poems themselves are not listed in either place; in the alphabetical list both the volume and page number where the author's works might be found are given. From the Preface: These volumes are intended to accompany Mr. Ellis's well known Specimens of the Early English Poets. That series concludes with the reign of Charles II, this begins with that of James his successor: the two together will exhibit the rise, progress, decline and revival of our Poetry, and the fluctuations of our poetical taste, from the first growth of the English language to the present times. A slight difference has been made in arrangement; instead of sorting the Poets, according to the reigns in which they flourished, I have noticed each under the year of his death, where that could be ascertained, otherwise according to the date of his chief publication. It was desirable that the series should be brought down to the end of the last century, and this order determined whom it should include. In consequence of this arrangement a few names will be found, which are included in the work of Mr. Ellis. Many worthless versifyers are admitted among the English Poets, by the courtesy of criticism, which seems to conceive that charity towards the dead may cover the multitude of its offences against the libing. There were other reasons for including here the reprobate, as well as the elect.
