Notes
  • The author would like to thank Charles Pachter for permission to reproduce images from Atwood and Pachter (1997) Roughing It in The Bush, or, Life in Canada, with her own illustrations; and Moodie (1913) with colour illustrations by R. A. Stewart. Moodie (then Susanna Strickland) published her first story, Spartacus: A Roman Story (1822), when she was 19. This heroic portrait of a historical figure was followed by a number of morally instructive stories for children, among them The Little Quaker; or, The Triumph of Virtue and The Little Prisoner ; or, Passion and Patience . From 1827 to 1830, Susanna contributed poems and stories to , a fashionable literary magazine, including a series of sketches of Suffolk life whose style prefigured her later work, Roughing It in The Bush (1852). She then wrote two antislavery tracts, The History of Mary Prince, a West Indian Slave (1831) and Negro Slavery Described by a Negro (1831), for the Anti-Slavery society. In 1831, Susanna Strickland published a collection of her early poetry entitled Enthusiasm, and Other Poems

    Review by Mary Thomas. excerpt:
While her husband was thus engaged [in attempting to find an affordable farm in the vicinity of Coburg], Susanna endured her "unpleasant" residence in the crowded "house of public entertainment" as best she could. With leisure and conveniences available to her but often alone with Katie [her baby daughter] while John was farm-hunting, she found herself "daily yielding up my whole heart and soul to that worst of all maladies, homesickness". Her mood was such that she was too lonely and dejected to engage in new writing. "Memory," she told a female friend, "is my worst companion; for by constantly recalling scenes of past happiness, she renders me discontented with the present, and hopeless of the future, and it will require all your kind sympathy to reconcile me to Canada." Roughing It in the Bush was a tale of difficulties overcome, and talent, especially of the literary variety, unappreciated. And then she was upset that people in Canada didn't much care for, or buy, her book!

Life in the Clearings is both companion-piece and sequel to Roughing It in the Bush Having longed for an opportunity to visit Niagara Falls, Moodie's wishes are finally granted when, after a period of serious illness, she and her husband take a boat trip from their home in Belleville, along the shores of Lake Ontario to Niagara. This trip forms the structural premise for the work, which is less a travelogue than a collection of anecdote, observation, commentary, and criticism of the life of Upper Canadian urban society in 1853. A woman of thirty when she immigrated to Canada, Moodie is often enthusiastic about the new folkways observed in Canadian culture, even as she longs for the accustomed gentility of middle-class Victorian England. Indeed, Moodie frequently contradicts herself, praising in one account that which she huffily dismisses in the following chapter. Still, as a social history, Moodie's work offers much insight into the life of the times, and as a work of literature
