John Thurston. Montreal and Kingston: McGill-Queen's University Press 1996. Pp. xii, 264. $55.00 Reviewed by Cecilia Morgan Queen's University As a historian of gender, colonialism, and the middle class of nineteenth-century Ontario, I have found that the writings of the two Strickland sisters who emigrated to Upper Canada have often been pressed into service as a means of understanding middle-class women's reactions to life in the bush: Moodie, the class-ridden, discontented, and culturally adrift gentlewoman, and Catharine Parr Traill, the cheerful, 'just roll up your sleeves and get on with it' pioneer housewife who cultivated, rather than fought, her environment. Their works, particularly Moodie's, are trotted out far too frequently as descriptions of Upper Canadian 'reality.'

Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by Mary Jane Edwards
Elizabeth Thompson's edition of Susanna Moodie's Roughing It in the Bush is one of the Canadian Critical Editions published by Tecumseh Press under the direction of John Moss and Gerald Lynch. Designed `for academic study and the interested reader,' these volumes aim to provide `authoritative texts of significant Canadian works within a comprehensive critical setting.' This edition, then, modelled on the Norton critical editions, should present a rationale for a choice of copy text, an explanation of its reproduction, and an `appropriate' bibliographical, biographical, and critical apparatus.
With a clear explanation of the history of the first edition, this choice could certainly be justified. Thompson, however, presents an account of the printing of Roughing It that repeats Bentley's description of each new issue and impression of Moodie's work as a new edition. Although this use of `edition' was a common practice in the nineteenth century, it no longer accords with standard bibliographical language. The sections on `Publishing History' and `Choice of Copy Text' in her `Editor's Preface,' therefore, are not only inexact, but also misleading.

45. Susanna Moodie: A Life

http://www.ecwpress.com/books/moodie.htm
"There is something in my character which always leads me to extremes" (Susanna Moodie) Although Roughing It in the Bush appears on almost every course in Canadian literature, and her writing has been a staple for Canadian literary scholars and historians of succeeding generations, this is the first critical biography of Susanna Moodie. The product of many years of research, it should prove invaluable to anyone interested in Canadian literature and cultural history. Peterman's illustrated biography introduces readers to the complex, driven, and sensitive woman who in 1832 left the cloistered world of middle-class life in England to take up homesteading in the backwoods of Ontario. Drawing upon the letters of Susanna Moodie as well as the full corpus of her work, Peterman looks at her rich and varied life, revealing her tendency to embrace extreme positions, and assessing the various sources of tension in her temperament, especially as they affected her written work. Peterman begins with Moodie's ultimately failed attempt to fashion herself as a spokesperson for Canada's future after she had achieved some celebrity with the publication of Roughing It in the Bush (1852). The chapters that follow provide a larger context for understanding her work, and the effect that notoriety had upon her, as Peterman discusses Moodie's early life in England (1803-32), her experiences in the backwoods of Canada (1832-39), her years in Belleville (1840-69), and her widow¬hood (1869-85).

http://www.northbayliteracycouncil.ca/Susanna.htm
Susanna Moodie - A Canadian Pioneer The ship had been nine weeks at sea. There had been winds and fogs. The ship had run out of food. Now it sailed into the quiet waters of the St. Lawrence River. The 76 passengers on board climbed up on deck to see the view. The river seemed alive with small boats. They were carrying passengers from the tall ships that rode at anchor. Flags of all colours were flying from their masts. Long rows of small white houses stood along the river banks. Here and there was a church. Its metal roof shone in the sun and its slim spire reached into the blue sky. The deep green forest was right behind the houses. Farther back were the hills. They rose higher and higher until their tops were lost in the blue of the sky. It was the fall of 1832. The 76 passengers had come from England and Scotland. They were on their way to the new country called Canada. They hoped to make a new beginning. Back home they had heard many stories about Canada. They heard about its fine soil that would grow grains and fruits and vegetables, its clear water, its wide open spaces. They had heard that they could get farmland for next to nothing. They had been told that there would be no taxes to pay. That was the Canada of 1832. Susanna Moodie was one of the passengers. She and her husband, Dunbar, had come to make a new beginning in Canada. They brought with them their 6-month-old daughter, Katie, and a servant girl, Hannah. They were hungry. There had been little to eat for at least two weeks of the voyage. Susanna was dreaming of real bread and butter as the ship finally dropped anchor in Montreal harbour.

Susanna Moodie
back to top ten nominations (original picture) Susanna Moodie was a popular British-Canadian author who wrote many types of literature. Throughout her life she wrote poetry, short stories, articles and novels, but she is best known for Roughing It in the Bush, a narrative about life in Canada for pioneers during her time.
Her Life
Early stages of her life
On December 6, 1803, Susanna was born into the Strickland family near Bungay, Suffolk, England. She had five sisters and two brothers who were all interested in poetry, theatre and history like herself. In 1808, when Susanna was five, her family moved to Reydon Hall, Suffolk , where her father died later in 1818. Immediately after, Susanna and her sisters started incomes of writing natural history, children's stories and women's journals. At age nineteen she published her first story, "Spartacus: A Roman Story". In 1831, Susanna was introduced to the Anti-Slavery Society , whom she wrote two anti-slavery tracks for. There she met her future husband, John Moodie. Because of financial reasons, the Moodies immigrated to Cobourg, Upper Canada in 1832, after they had married. They bought some partly cleared land to attempt to farm there. After seven years, they removed to Belleville, hoping to become more successful than farming. The hard work there didn't stop Mrs. Moodie from pursuing her writing career. In this period she wrote her most famous work, Roughing It in the Bush.

A Settler's Tale
RTF version (400 Kb) The literature of any period reflects the concerns, attitudes and physical realities of the period from which it comes. In the nineteenth century, Canada was still a developing country with vast forests and unmapped plains. The people who wrote about this time were sometimes starkly realistic, and at other times wildly romantic.
