Susanna Moodie and Catherine Parr Traill are icons in the Canadian imagination. Their books, most notably Roughing it in the Bush and The Backwoods of Canada, have painted for readers in this country and around the world an enduring portrait of Canadian pioneer life. They have also become almost mythic figures in the Canadian literary landscape, appearing in the works of Northrop Frye, Robertson Davies, Margaret Atwood, Timothy Findley and Margaret Laurence. Most of what we know of these two English gentlewomen who spent their adult lives scrambling to survive in Britain's hardscrabble colony comes from their own self-consciously crafted writings and from other writers' sometimes fanciful depictions of them. But what were the women behind the authorial voices really like? What was their relationship to each other? And to their husbands, children and the family they left behind in England? The answers are thoroughly captivating and not a little surprising. Their lives are revealed in the extremes that shaped them fame and starvation, snobbery and passion, profound faith and ersatz spirituality.

good-hearted fleur-de-lis; blush. hares save dangerous "go the whole hog."_ The people in the back woods were fortunate in not having their peace disturbed by these political broils. In the depths of the dark forest, they were profoundly ignorant of how the colony was governed; and many did not even know which party was in power, and when the rebellion actually broke out it fell upon them like a thunder-clap. But in their ignorance and seclusion there was at least safety, and they were free from that dreadful scourge "the malicious strife of tongues." The fever of the "Clergy Reserves question" delicate. " This term delicate, be it known to my readers is a favourite one with young ladies here, but its general application would lead you to imagine it another term for laziness. It is quite fashionable to be delicate, but horribly vulgar to be considered capable of enjoying such a useless blessing as good health. I knew a lady, when I first came to the colony, who had her children daily washed in water almost hot enough to scald a pig. On being asked why she did so, as it was not only an unhealthy practice, but would rob the little girls of their fine colour, she exclaimed, "Oh, that is just what I do it for. I want them to look delicate.

SUSANNA MOODIE Susanna was born in Bungay, England Dec. 6, 1803, and passed away in Toronto, Ont. on April 8, 1885. Susanna is an author who wrote several native books describing their differences to Canadians and Americans. She was the youngest in a literary family and being the youngest was distressing for her. She began writing more for economic reasons than for personal satisfaction after her father's death. Many of her first books were written for young children and young women. One of her first books described Suffolk Life and was called La Belle Assemblee which she wrote between 1827 and 1828. Susanna Moodie married John Wedderburn Dunbar Moodie in 1831 and then moved to London, Ont. in the same year. There she wrote two antislavery tracts, one named "The History of Mary Prince, A west Indian Slave" (1831) and the other "Negro Slavery Described by a Negro" (1831). In July of 1832 she moved with her six children and husband to Cobourg, Upper Canada and started a farming business in two different locations. Eight years later, Susanna moved to Belleville, Quebec after her husband Dunbar was appointed Sheriff of Victoria Dist. There she wrote about her pioneer years for the Literary Garland.

Abstract
Susanna Moodie writes of living in Canada in the early 19 th century. In Roughing It In The Bush she has not only documented a life story, but has done so in an entertaining manner. Her story reads like a novel; interesting characters and captivating events make up the majority of her life. One such character in the novel is the character of Brian, the still-hunter, to which Moodie devotes an entire chapter. Here is a man who is kind to her family and whom she befriends, who helps her as she struggles with life in the bush. He makes for an interesting character, especially when one takes into account that he is completely fictitious and, in fact, dead.

WE met as teenage instructors at summer camp in 1961 and became instant friends. I asked the questions. She invariably came up with the thoughtful answers. Our friendship grew. During her last year at the University of Toronto, and my first, she gave me some silkscreen equipment which she had used to make posters. I took a night course in silkscreening at the Ontario College of Art and began to make posters for Hart House and for UC Follies. Her parents bought one of my first silkscreen prints. She left to do graduate studies at Harvard. I continued in Art History at U of T, and in Paris. We corresponded, far more frequently than people do now. She often pitched my latest prints to her friends, and unfailingly gave me encouragement. Top of Page When she gave me a copy of Double Persephone, her first book of hand-set poems, I was thrilled. Her words were like triggers, setting off a buzz of associations in my head, feeding a. visual subconscious that I had only just begun to identify.

http://www.daily.umn.edu/ae/Print/1997/03/sto/csint.html
Interview by David Wiley How did you come across this story, and how was it that you came to put the book together the way you did? How I came across the story, I came across it first in a book by a person of the time called Susanna Moodie, who spent seven horrible years in the woods, because her family had emigrated. She wrote a book called Roughing it in the Bush Are there significant storylines that you had to discard? I had to discard about the first hundred pages after I’d written them — or that a pproach that was in the first hundred pages, because I had a third-person Grace, and that third-person Grace wasn’t working for me at all. So I went back to first-person Grace. And various other things. I originally intended to have the Simon Jordan chara cter meet with the Susanna Moodie person, but if he had done so, he would have had to have said ‘ I think you made some of this up,’ and that wouldn’t have been socially advisable at the time. You wouldn’t have done that. A gentleman wouldn’t have done tha t. I really liked the quilt motif, how all these various parts came together to make a whole. And the scope of the novel is amazing.

Studies in Nineteenth-Century Canadian Literature I:
Margins/Identities - Canada's Nineteenth-Century Women Writers
F. Balisch
This course explores various approaches to reading and writing about the work of nineteenth- century women writers in Canada, as well as the formation of the Canadian canon (which does not include the work of many of these women writers). Much of this wo rk is not available in modern reprints; therefore, students will be expected to use such resources as the CIHM collection to choose a work for further research. A number of these women thought of themselves as British, rather than Canadian or even North American. Throughout the century, women's novels, poems, plays and short stories reveal many of the tensions between colonizer and colonized, centre and margin, place and displacement, as well as those arising from gender roles, class, race, and ethnici ty.

The Indian girl we meet in cold type, however is rarely distressed by having to belong to any tribe, or to reflect any tribal characteristics. . . . It is a deplorable fact but there is only one of her. The story writer who can portray a new kind of Indian girl or better still portray a "real live" Indian girl will do something in Canadian literature that has never been but once.
