ENTERTAINMENT:Book Review By K. Parker Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo
Although much of Cereus Blooms at Night is quite dark, there is always an underlying thread of hope. While enduring heartbreaking conditions and losses, most characters respond with secret rebellions and subversions indicating that their spirits are not broken. The queer characters in the novel are portrayed with dignity and tenderness. A most refreshing aspect of the queer storylines is that despite being subjected to some level of ignorance or cruelty, these characters all find loving relationships. Too often, queerness is equated with unavoidable tragedy and violence within books and movies. Overall an enjoyable and compelling novel, the ultimate mood is one of optimism. Shani Mootoo has crafted a beautiful, multi-layered tale as vivid and delicate as the cereus flower which appears throughout the book. Next month: An Interview With Shani Mootoo. 70. Postcolonial Literatures By African And Caribbean Writers

Postcolonial Literatures by African and Caribbean Writers Jana Evans Braziel, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Course Description The course surveys important works of literature by Anglophone writers in the formerly colonized countries of African and the Caribbean (internal departmental note: for rotation purposes, the course could alternately focus on the postcolonial Anglophone literatures of Asia and the Asian Pacific). We will examine postcolonial Anglophone literary texts in their historical contexts and within the frameworks of British and French colonialism in the late eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. The survey will be structured by the basic questions which preoccupy postcolonial authors and the scholars who study these works of literature: for example, which language will the author write in, the native tongue or the colonizer’s dominant language? What are the political implications of this linguistic choice? How is the postcolonial condition inextricably bound, historically and linguistically, to the colonial state of these writer’s countries? Are certain genres of writing, such as the novel, predicated upon modern, western ideals (teleological development, mimetic or realistic portrayals of human nature and the world; etc.)? What are the interrelations of language, religion and culture in postcolonial texts, particularly as positioned against the ‘west’ and the literary traditions of the west? From the early decolonization novel, Things Fall Apart (by the very influential Ibo writer, Chinua Achebe) to the more contemporary literary works by writers influenced by both postcolonial and poststructuralist (and other ‘western’) frames (writers such as Ben Okri from Nigeria), the course will examine the interrelation of colonialism and postcolonial literatures in African and the Caribbean. Writers included in the course are from many different geographical areas: Nigeria (Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Buchi Emecheta, Ben Okri), Ghana (Ama Ata Aidoo, Ayi Kwei Armah), Zimbabwe (Tsitsi Dangarembga, Dambudzo Marechera, Yvonne Vera), Somalia (Nuruddin Farah), Uganda (Moses Isegawa), South Africa (J.M.Coetzee, Sindiwe Magona), Guyana (Wilson Harris, Fred D’Aguiar), Trinidad (C.L.R. James, V.S. Naipaul, Dionne Brand, Shani Mootoo), St. Lucia (Derek Walcott), St. Kitts (Caryl Phillips), Barbados (Kamau Brathwaite, George Lamming) and Jamaica (Erma Brodber).

Interview With Shani Mootoo
Shani Mootoo is a Vancouver artist and a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. In 1989, after participating in both individual and group counselling, Shani made the courageous decision to confront sex offenders with her personal story at the Stave Lake Correctional Centre. I interviewed Shani in her home on May 13 and asked her to relate the steps in her healing process. Q: What prompted you to begin to explore your childhood sexual abuse? A: That was in about 1982 and I started to actually deal with the abuse in therapy in 1988/89. Between that time I was in a few different relationships and I noticed a pattern; that I was getting involved with people who were really abusive towards me in one way or the other. Then I fell in love with someone who wouldn't abuse me and I tried to provoke different instances of abuse because otherwise it was really uncomfortable. It was as if I really don't deserve this love, or to be treated well. My partner at the time was the only person I had spoken with about the abuse. She said to me, "You have to start dealing with your abuse. It's really affecting the way you sort of give me all the power." I would set up situations where she ended up being the bad person and I ended up being the victim. It was like this dreadful little dance that we kept getting into and it was meant to hold us together, but with her age and wisdom she was able to see what was going on and say, "I'm not playing this game, you'd better do something." At that time she was actually studying to be a therapist.

Dunsford, Cathie. Cowrie. New York: Spinifex Press, 1994. A lesbian novel from the South Pacific. Lai, Larissa. When Fox is a Thousand. 1995. The first novel by Astraea foundation award-winning writer Larissa Lai, about second-generation Chinese-Canadian lesbians. One of the main characters is Artemis Wong, the daughter of Chinese immigrants to Canada who put her up for adoption by a Euro-Canadian couple. Another one of the main characters is the fox, which according to Chinese mythology can transform itself into women at 50, and become immortal at 1,000. Lee, Sky. Bellydancer Stories . Vancouver:Press Gang Publishers. 1994. Bellydancing was originally performed at the bedside of women in labour, as an erotic dance of creation. In these provocative stories "bellydancer" is an archetypal survivor, a dancer through trance and dream and a powerful metaphor of resistance against patriarchy. Lee, Sky. Disappearing Moon Cafe . Vancouver:Douglas and McIntyre. 1988. This first novel was a finalist for the 1990 Governor General's Literary Award here in Canada. Moving back and forth between past and present, between Canada and China, Sky Lee weaves fiction and historical fact into a memorable and moving picture of a people's struggle for identity - and a woman's attempt to understand and end a legacy of silence. Lim-Hing, Sharon, ed.
