Engineering With Elmer
By Chief Engineer Elmer Morley
Q . Elmer, I want to get my engineering license, I have been working on yachts for about 7 years now and am sure I have more than enough sea time. I am a U.S. Citizen and so I am planning on getting a USCG License. I have heard all the hoopla about the new system and I need some guidance. Ian A . Ian, I would encourage you to apply as soon as possible for your U.S. Engineering License because right now we are still in the old system. This means a lot less training time at school than will be required in the new system. Also, the new system (yet to be defined) will most likely eliminate the DDE as a foreign going license and will probably require that you start with a QMED document and then upgrade to Assistant Engineer 3000gt License which you would serve on for 360 days before qualifying for the Chief Engineer 3000gt License. Q . Elmer, We recently re-powered our single screw trawler and are experiencing a rather unique problem. We switched from a 453 Detroit diesel with a BW 1.91:1 gear to a 4 cylinder John Deere with a 2.57:1 gear. The swap went fine until we went to run the boat- we put it in forward and the boat went backwards! The mechanic checked the linkage and assured us that it was installed properly, what’s wrong? Jon

A Brief History of Holocaust Denial
Ben S. Austin This essay will attempt to provide a brief historical review of Holocaust denial. For an in-depth treatment of this question, the reader is referred to two major works on the subject: Lucy S. Dawidowicz, Historians and the Holocaust and Deborah Lipstadt, Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory . The material in the present essay draws heavily from these two excellent works. Discussion of current Holocaust denial and deniers will appear in a separate entry, Variations in Holocaust Denial . Here I am concerned with the historical background and origins of the movement. Primary attention will be given to Paul Rassinier, Harry Elmer Barnes and Austin J. App. The very first Holocaust deniers were the Nazis themselves. As it became increasingly obvious that the war was not going well, Himmler instructed his camp commandants to destroy records, crematoria and other sign of mass destruction of human beings. He was especially adamant with regard to those Jews still alive who could testify regarding their experiences in the camps. In April, 1945, he signed an official order (which still exists in his own handwriting) that the camps would not be surrendered and that no prisoner "fall into the hands of the enemies alive." Apparently Himmler knew that the "Final Solution" would be viewed as a moral outrage by the rest of the world. Historian Kenneth Stern (1993:6) suggests that many top SS leaders left Germany at the end of the war and began immediately the process of using their propaganda skills to rewrite history. Shortly after the war, denial materials began to appear. One of the first was Friedrich Meinecke's

E-mail: Lukas@filmscoremonthly.com Elmer Bernstein’s score for From the Terrace was written in 1960 the year of The Magnificent Seven. Mark Robson’s film, the stuff of soap operas, was based on a rather lurid novel by John O’Hara. Starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, it charted the life and career of Alfred Eaton (Newman) who returns from World War II to find his mother unfaithful and alcoholic; and his father overbearing and unsympathetic. Eaton enters business determined to equal or surpass his father, and on the way acquires an unsympathetic wife (Woodward) whose attentions wonder when he concentrates on business. In the end he has to decide between his career and happiness with the warm and sincere Natalie (the lovely Ina Balin). For this sultry melodrama, Bernstein created a score that glanced back at the sweet romanticism of Steiner yet, in its advanced sophisticated style, anticipated his work over 30 years later on

PAUL ELMER FOSTER Paul E. Foster (1919-1998, born Chagrin Falls, Ohio) is my father. This WebSite is composed of memories of his that he wrote when he first started having severe health problems and I asked him to write down his memories for me. They are reproduced here for others' enjoyment and edification. He was proud of his McFarland heritage and traced his roots back, through Richard Warren of the Mayflower, to Scotland. He has written a detailed genealogy. Perhaps his relationship to the real Mother Goose makes him such an engaging writer. He graduated from Case School of Applied Science (Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity) and was immediately commissioned into the U.S. Navy (Commander, USNR) which sent him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After the war, he moved back to the Cleveland area and worked for Arthur G. McKee and Co. He left McKee and joined our nation's space program. What really ignited a flame in his heart was America's space program. He served as Chief of Technology Utilization and traveled all over the country speaking on the benefits and spin-offs of our space program. He met the original cast of Star Trek and credits the show with making the space program more personal to Americans. He and Julie had two children, Paul Elmer Foster, Jr. (married to Leslie Beck) and Janine Allayne Foster (married to Judge Bruce Woody), and our family traveled all over the country and to other countries. He was very active in his community and church. The songs that accompany the letters represent things which were important to him: his faith, his work, his wife and family, his friends.

From Rod Bennett : This short is pretty unique; it's done in a very unusual style not employed in any other Disney film. First of all, the character models themselves don't look at all "Disney" to me; I believe they may have been inspired by a popular comic strip series from the period that I recall - all about jungle animals and running regularly in The Saturday Evening Post (but, darn it, I've forgotten the artist's name). Also : there's a great deal more "modeling" (with shadow) on the figures here than we get to see in any other Disney effort until "Who Framed Roger Rabbit!" All in all, this one strikes me as wildly experimental and I, for one, would like to know more about its origins.
