Boston, 1808. Russell and Cutler. Published by request of the society. A sixteen page pamphlet of Paine's address concerning disasterous fires in the past, the prevention of fires, and the need to provide for those whose property has been destroyed by fire. More than likely, the author, Charles Paine (1775-1810), is the son of Robert Treat Paine (1731-1814), author of the patriotic poem, Adams and Liberty, which was written for and sung to the tune of Anechron in Heaven, at the fourth anniversary of the Massachusetts Chiritable Fire Society in 1798. We are all familiar with the tune of Anachron in Heaven, an english bar ballad; it is the tune of the Star Spangled Banner.

Christopher Morley An utterly trivial, but nonetheless charming poem. One of Morley's particular gifts is to peer at the commonplace and reveal unexpectedly viewpoints therein, and today's poem is no exception. "Tit for Tat" is not really a 'funny' poem, in the laugh-out-loud sense, but it strikes a pleasing note of gentle humour and whimsy. Links: We've run two of Morley's poems: poem #553 contains a biography and some notes on Morley poem #833 is another nice example of a mundane detail elevated into poetry. -martin

Navigation Works Reviews Send Mail Here follow some remarks concerning a remarkable man of American letters, undeservedly swept under the carpet of obscurity by the ebb and tide of popular opinion, but still remembered fondly by bibliophiles. Christopher Morley spent his youth much as recounted in the semi-autobiographical work 'John Mistletoe', lurking in libraries, with his nose often in a book. He went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, where his first book was published, 'the traditional slim volume of verse', as he later recounted. He went on to write numerous works, redolent of the atmostphere of early twentieth-century America, and gradually following the course to modernity. Morley's works are difficult to find now, with pitfully few of them still in print. Due to his popularity in the first half of this century, though, one can still locate a large number of his works at better second hand bookshops. I chose to use a definite article in the heading of this site as I could not, on a cursory search, find much else to do with Morley on the web. This site is a new thought of mine. It is, as always, under constuction. William Nedblake Introduction Works Send Mail This site was created on 20 february 1997.

Introduction: One Reader's History Biography Introduction: One Reader's History I'll be the first to admit that I have yet to read all of Morley's works: but I shan't let that stop me from writing about him nonetheless. I started as most people who like such things have done: I read The Haunted Bookshop , loaned to me by a one-time friend who occasionally had decent taste in literature. I read the book, enjoyed it a great deal, and promptly forgot about it for several years. Then, as it usually happens, I stumbled across another copy of The Haunted Bookshop , this time a paper-bound edition from the early '80s. I bought it, re-read the book, and promptly began another of my quests. I decided to seek the remainder of Morley's works, and have been doing so, on and off again, for the past four years. I've recently found a cache of them at a second-hand bookshop in Kansas City, and am slowly buying up those that they have (although if you should write to me and ask nicely, I might tell you which shop it is...). One of the few Morley titles still in print is, oddly enough, not really a book by Morley at all, rather, it is a collection of the author's essays on another of my secret vices, and deep and abiding love for the Sherlock Holmes tales of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Morley created a society, which he punningly called the Standard Doyle Company, to further the appreciation of Doyle's works in the United States. Those items collected in the book of the same name
