William S. Peterson William Morris, who often enjoyed startling his readers with paradoxical assertions, argued that one could create an attractive book even with a mediocre typeface: it was, he said, primarily the "architecture" of the printed page (by which he meant such matters as word spacing, leading, and the proportions of margins) which determined its visual quality. It is an intriguing suggestionlike many of Morris's throw-away lines, rich with possibilities for speculationbut in his less provocative moments Morris understood the absolute centrality of good type-design, and his famous "typographical adventure" (to use his phrase) during the 1890s was successful in the end primarily because he was willing to create his own typefaces. Morris had made a number of notable experiments in book design long before he founded the Kelmscott Press in 1891. During the 1860s, for example, shortly after he and his friend Edward Burne-Jones had left Oxford, they attempted an ambitious illustrated edition of Morris's poem

There were two great periods of illustration in the Victorian period: in the 1860s following the inspired drawings by the Pre-Raphaelites, and in the 1890s, including the private press movement and Arts and Crafts work by William Morris and like-minded people. These pages include several devoted to such illustrations, and this page shows what can be found so far:

Sergio Mendes says he cannot recall how the idea of interweaving two female singers into a unified lead vocal came to mind back in 1965. By 1968, however, millions of music enthusiasts in the U.S. instantly recognized that the stylish, acrylic-clear deliveries of Karen Philipp and Lani Hall - the future wife of record mogul Herb Alpert - belonged to Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. In that year, Brasil '66 scored three Top 20 pop hits, including two Top Ten smashes, "The Look Of Love" (No. 4) and "The Fool On The Hill" (No. 6), as well as "Scarborough Fair," which peaked at No. 16. Interestingly, "Scarborough Fair" already had been a Top 20 hit for Simon & Garfunkel in early 1968.

The William Morris Hunt Library is the main museum library, and has been an integral part of the Museum of Fine Arts since its founding. In 1870 the Trustees of the Museum were incorporated by the Massachusetts legislature. The founding of a special library was one of their major goals for the new institution. Five years later, the sum of $1,000 given for the purchase of books made this goal a reality. In 1909 the Library was named the William Morris Hunt Memorial Library to honor this popular Boston artist and generous supporter of the Museum. The W. Van Alan Clark, Jr. Library is located in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. With its collection of over 18,000 volumes, the Library supports research on twentieth century and contemporary art. The Library also supports the studio work of artists.
Services The libraries are open to the public. Museum admission is not required for access. The collections are non-circulating; black and white photocopy charges are $.10/copy. The libraries' holdings are reflected in the Fenway Libraries Online (FLO) database, which can be reached via the
