john mortimer, attorney and author of the Horace Rumpole stories. There is no worse tyranny, wrote john Stuart Mill, than that of a majority. The test of democracy is not that the majority should always get its way but how far minorities are respected. Will fox hunting be saved? Our best hope is to get President Bush to put on a pink coat and chase a fox; no doubt Tony Blair would fall right in behind him.

Mortimer, John
October 1987
John Mortimer is perhaps best known in the United States for his comic-drama series Rumpole of the Bailey and for his textual adaptation of the popular miniseries Brideshead Revisited, both of which have been featured on American public television. He is the author of many literary works, among them, an autobiography, Clinging to the Wreckage, and a full-length play entitled Voyage Round My Father. As a lawyer Mr. Mortimer has risen to become a Queen's Counsel, the designation given to barristers who appear only in court cases of major importance. He has drawn heavily upon his legal experience for material in his novels and dramatic productions. Additional Biography Information courtesy of Google.com

Are We Prepared to Watch as Our Precious Freedoms
Are Recklessly Signed Away to the Judges in Europe?
This is a question that should be above the "let's pretend" battles, the exchange of lurid bombast and the wilful misunderstandings of party politics. It's a cause in which we should all be united. It is nothing less than the preservation of our legal system, which has grown and developed over the centuries, built on the strong foundation of jury trials and the presumption of innocence.
There is a real danger that our precious rights and liberties may be lost in a vague and haphazard attempt to impose a single system of law on Europe.
If, God forbid, you ever found yourself in trouble with the law, would you like to be kept in jail for an indeterminate period without trial? Would you be happy in a court which didn't presume you innocent?
Would you care to be arrested on the say-so of a Greek or Spanish judge and be packed off, with no case having been made you, to face trial under a foreign system in another country?

    "Champagne for everyone!"
By SCOTT ROSENBERG Harry Aung H orace Rumpole: the very name of John Mortimer's popular creation conjures wrinkled clothing and the hearty consumption of alcohol. A wigged barrister with a passion for cheap wine ("Chateau Thames Embankment") and a dedication to the criminal defense, Rumpole has achieved the greatest popularity in his television incarnation, solving droll mysteries with barely a twitch of his stiff upper lip. But his purest embodiment is in the collections of tales Mortimer has been regularly producing for many years. The tenth and newest is "Rumpole and the Angel of Death." Mortimer, a barrister himself for most of his life, has written television plays (like "Brideshead Revisited"), novels (like "Paradise Postponed") and screenplays. In the drama "A Voyage Round My Father" and again in "Clinging to the Wreckage," a sharply entertaining autobiography, he painted complex portraits of his stern barrister father. The fictional Rumpole, it's clear, draws on real-life traits of both father and son. Now in his 70s, Mortimer could no doubt retire with honor from writing as he has from legal practice. But he remains a dedicated early-morning writer, applying pen to paper from 5 a.m. most days, even when he is on a speaking tour as when we talked to him recently in San Francisco. By midday, though, the diligence typically gives way to drinking, Mortimer volunteers with a smile.
