Rumpole of the Bailey: back for another turn
By SUZANNE FERRISS
RUMPOLE RESTS HIS CASE.
By John Mortimer.
Viking, $24.95; 224 pp. In his 12th collection of stories featuring the crusty barrister, John Mortimer has rounded up the usual suspects who populate the Old Bailey. Rumpole and his crew delight readers anew in seven frothy pieces skewering the legal establishment, contemporary British culture and domestic life. Rumpole and the Old Familiar Faces is a fitting title for the first story. A man of a certain age, Rumpole finds himself reflecting on his past and bumping into former clients, even though the one certainty of the barrister's life is: "Your ex-customers will never want to see you again." Not one but two "ex-customers" plunge Rumpole into new cases of theft and blackmail. In the process, we are reintroduced to the "old familiar faces" of Rumpole's life and work. His wife, Hilda, better known as "She Who Must Be Obeyed" (or, affectionately, "She Who Must"), issues commands in their London flat, which is itself the object of a hilarious subplot involving decorators for the TV program

Wonewoc Reproter, June 4:
John Mortimer died at his home on Section 20 in the Town of Woodland, Tuesday, May 26, at the age of 63 years, 2 months and 5 days. He was born in Lincolnshire, England, (incorrect-see birth place) and came to America in 1849, stopping at Oconomowoc, Wis., till the year 1854, when he came to this town and settled on the farm he now owns, being a resident of this town 37 years. January 2, 1858, he united in marriage to Miss Phoebe A. Smith, who still lives to morn his loss. While he leaves a score of relatives to morn his loss, there is a host of friends and neighbors who will keenly miss this upright and honest citizen, always ready to help in time of need those less fortunate than he in the battle of life.

R umpole, the fictive alter ego of eminent QC and playwright John Mortimer, is Exhibit A in any attempt to prove that the British legal mystery is far more deeply rooted and interestingly written than the American version. The American legal profession's archetype is some fast-talking shyster with shiny eyes, a shiny Italian suit, and too much shiny jewelry (helloooo, OJ defense team); but the English one is concretized by rumpled wheezy Mortimer, the Bard of the British Bar, in a dirty horsehair wig and knee breeches. Horace Rumpole is an untidy middle-aged barrister (meaning a trial lawyer) who is still in love with good English writing and the thrill of pleading cases at the Old Bailey sort of a legal-beagle cross between Walter Mitty and Winston Churchill. Absolutely the most endearing thing about him is his utter lack of squeamishness: he triumphs over the best efforts of his wife and snobby fellow jurists to change him because he simply fails to comprehend the petty motivations (like career advancement, social acceptibility, and everything else involved in going along and getting along) that drive most of the world. Instead, he focusses on his own goals: winning criminal cases and understanding the human heart.

Article 11 January 2001 John Mortimer: 'Why I wouldn't lunch with a government minister' by Brendan O'Neill
Autobiographical works often reveal the author's inner-most thoughts and secrets - but Sir John Mortimer's Summer of a Dormouse tells us more about the author's socks life than his sex life.
'Can you imagine having to call your wife or daughter to help you put on a pair of socks?' asks Mortimer. 'It is rather awful.' Mortimer is getting old and he wants the world to know. At 77, the author, playwright and creator of Rumpole of the Bailey is facing up to the fact that life can sometimes seem like 'one long march to and from the lavatory'. But despite this, his spirits remain undimmed. 'You do the same silly things, you get glasses of wine flung in your face. You're like you always were, except you can't see very well and you fall over.'
For Mortimer, one of the worst things about getting old is becoming an 'unwilling member' of the government's latest target group - pensioners. 'New Labour is only being nice to us old people because there are so many of us - they want our votes.' He is not surprised that alongside the courting of the 'grey vote' government ministers want to replace the words 'elderly' and 'pensioner' with less fogeyish words that will appeal to the young, and that they have written off the over-70s for not being 'aspirational'. 'It is typical of this government, where everything, even things to do with the elderly, has to be "young" and "new". And it's typical of their hypocrisy, the deception that we are slowly but surely getting used to.'

November 11. Remembrance Day. A day of patriotism and poppies, of British pride and grief and memories - for a diminishing minority of us - of victory in the last war we really had to fight and win. And now it seems we are seriously worried not so much by an enemy invading us from abroad but by an enemy we fear, so it is suggested, among us.
