After examining numerous listings of used books for sale and finding many erroneous references to Fort's works, I am providing the following list of various editions of the books and stories by Charles Hoy Fort to help identify what has been published. German translations of Fort's books are still available from Zweitausendeins, ( http://www.zweitausendeins.de ), along with Ulrich Magin's biography of Fort; and, Hemus reports that, though their Portuguese translation is out-of-print, O Livro dos Danados may be reprinted early in 2001.

David Berkowitz: The Son of Sam
Psychologists have often wondered what causes a human being to behave in the way that they behave. Is it nature, meaning the environment that they were brought up in, or is it nurture, the way that the person's parents or guardians raised them. David Berkowitz, who terrorized New York for approximately a year and a half by murdering people, exemplifies a person who is affected by nature. Berkowitz's parents were normal parents and did everything normal parents do. They brought him up the best way they knew how, and he still turned out the way he did. Berkowitz would have been a gold mine for a psychiatrist, because of how mentally ill he was. One word, and one word only could describe David Berkowitz: Insane According to Lawrence R. Klausner, who is the author of The Son of Sam , David Berkowitz was a very troubled child. For much of his life, he had been tormented by demons. He kept to himself for most of his childhood. He often locked himself in a closet for hours at a time to escape all human contact. He craved the darkness and felt an urge to flee from people. Berkowitz was a very troubled young man during his childhood, and for much of his adult life, cruel demons had complete control over his life. Berkowitz believed that animals, especially all dogs, were demons. The demons frightened him so much that he would have to sometimes sleep with his mother and father. Berkowitz would sometimes knock over furniture while having fits and seizures, and was responsible for setting fires as a youngster. He blamed all of his antics on Satan. He once claimed, "The devil made me into a murderer."

David Berkowitz, Son of Sam
Serial killers are a subject of fascination for many and there are numerous websites dedicated to the gruesome exploits of Jack The Ripper, Jeffrey Dahmer and the Boston Strangler. But David Berkowitz, who has been incarcerated now for 25 years, is one of the few serial killers to have his own personal website, which he uses mainly to spread his message of remorse and faith. printer friendly version
365 years in prison ...
Of course the prisons of America are full of men and women who have committed horrific crimes but now claim to be born-again Christians. Cynics claim these people are using religion to gain parole or, like Karla Faye Tucker, to escape execution. But Berkowitz, who was jailed for 365 years in 1977, insists he does not want his freedom. Every June he is entitled to a parole hearing but, in a letter to New York Governor George Pataki that is posted on his website, Berkowitz writes that he is disappointed there is going to be a hearing and adds: "I have absolutely no interest in parole." He writes: "Frankly, I can give you no good reason why I should even be considered for parole. I can, however, give you many reasons why I should not be. The loss of six lives and the wounding of even more are reasons enough."

"The way to make a million dollars is to start a religion."
L. Ron Hubbard is widely rumored to have said "The way to make a million dollars is to start a religion." There are also variant rumors. For some reason, this is often mentioned on Usenet. Evidence is discussed below, but the short answer is that it's almost certainly true. The Church of Scientology has actually taken German publishers to court for printing this story. Stern won (see below). One form of the rumor is that L. Ron Hubbard made a bar bet with Robert A. Heinlein. This is definitely not true. It's uncharacteristic of Heinlein, and there's no supporting evidence. There is, however, inconclusive evidence that Robert Heinlein suggested some parts of the original Dianetics Another variant is that Hubbard talked of starting a religion to avoid taxes. Jay Kay Klein reports that Hubbard said this in 1947. The Church's media guide tells reporters that the rumor is confused, and that it was George Orwell who said it. In 1938, Orwell did write "But I have always thought there might be a lot of cash in starting a new religion...". However, Robert Vaughn Young, who was Scientology's spokesman for 20 years, says that Hubbard learned about the Orwell quote from him . Young further states that he met three people who could remember Hubbard saying more-or-less the famous quote. Nor did Hubbard write a rebuttal of the rumor Young claims to have ghost-written the rebuttal in the Rocky Mountain News interview. I found the following in books about Hubbard and Scientology:

Dossier bibliographique

Son of Sam
The murder of Donna Lauria on July 29 1976 was one of around 20,000 murders in the US that year and did not merit a great deal of attention in New York, especially as it happened in an area of the Bronx in which the Mafia held power. The city's cynical journalists paid little heed to the killing, assuming perhaps that she had seen something or said something which had annoyed La Cosa Nostra. Two more murders were committed, and several other people seriously injured, before a press conference at the NYPD's headquarters at One Police Plaza on March 10 informed the nation that the same .44 caliber revolver had been responsible for the murders of Miss Lauria, and Virginia Voskerichian, a 19-year-old Armenian-American, who had been killed two days before. Police Commissioner Mike Codd said the gun had also been responsible for the murder of Christine Freund and two other shootings in the Bronx and neighboring Queens. The New York tabloid press seized on the story and within days everyone in the city was aware of the existence of the man known at the time as The .44 Killer.

New York City Mayor Abraham Beame called what he saw as a much needed press conference to discuss the Son of Sam case. It was the kind of name that the press would really grab on to and create a media persona. Beame dreaded the whole thing: "The killings were a horror. The police were under terrible strain. Everyone was beginning to question his ability to capture the gunman. The letter fused everything together. It was a man against an entire city. He had written this one policeman, but I knew it wasn't that captain he was writing about. It was every cop who was after him, all twenty-five thousand of them." Two letters left by Berkowitz (CORBIS) Dr. Martin Lubin, former head of forensic psychiatry at Bellevue, along with some forty-five other psychiatrists, convened to contribute to the psychological profile of the man they were seeking. In May of 1977, the police knew they were looking for a paranoid schizophrenic, who may have considered himself possessed of a demonic power. The killer was almost certainly a loner who had difficulty with relationships, particularly relationships with women. The Omega task force was flooded with calls. Everyone, it seemed, knew the killer: he was the neighbor who came home late every night, the odd brother-in-law who played with guns all the time, the weird guy in the bar who hated pretty girls. The list of suspects was endless. Every one of these thousands of leads had to be checked out and disqualified a huge chore for any task force.

by Ted White Lou Stathis is dead. Like most of my friends, I have a hard time dealing with this. It was not unexpected, especially after he was moved into a Brooklyn hospice, but Lou was young (well, younger than I) and, in his healthy days, so full of that peculiar energy and drive that I identify with native New Yorkers. I met Lou in the seventies, more or less through his Queens roommate, Barry Smotroff. It is doubly ironic that Barry was murdered in his apartment only a few years after that. Lou and I became close friends in the seventies, and I saw in him great talent as a writer, which I encouraged editorially. I first published him, as a (brief) columnist, in Fantastic. Then, when I moved to Heavy Metal, I launched his career as a music writer by giving him a rock (or, as he spelled it in those days, "rok") column. After I left HM, Lou succeeded Brad Balfour as HM's "magazine section" editor responsible for the short text bits that ran as a section in the magazine. And that launched his editorial career, which continued through High Times (Senior Editor), Reflex (editor), and, more recently DC Comics as an editor of the Vertigo line. I always knew Lou could do it although his columns always butted against deadlines (and, once, missed) he had the talent and the drive. His grungy little penthouse apartment on West End Avenue was a frequent refuge for me. Many a night after working at HM until 8 or 9 I'd go up there and hang out with Lou until midnight, reluctantly returning to the apartment I was sharing with Brad (and several others). And, both before and after HM, when I visited New York City, it was with Lou that I stayed.
