Special to The Independent As he closes in on his 80th birthday, one of Northumberland's most outspoken residents says it's time to pass the torch to a younger generation but he may keep on writing books anyway. Farley Mowat was born in the Quinte region 77 years ago. At one point he struck a few roots in Brighton, and he also lived in Roseneath before making Port Hope home. But his many international bestsellers are drawn from his travels through most of the northern hemisphere. As a decorated Captain and Intelligence Officer, Farley Mowat travelled to Canada's arctic to sweep his heart and mind of the horror of World War II. He searched for, and found by 1949, the purpose that became his life. There were stories to tell of Canada's neglected native peoples and animals. His concerns would expand to cover much of the globe. In short time he earned a reputation as one of our country's most loved storytellers.

The Protection of Wolves in the United States Brian F.
Adamsville Junior/Senior High School
Adamsville, TN When the topic of protection of wolves in the United States was brought to my attention, I had a quick whim to compare the individual protection devices these magnificent creatures use daily to the protection efforts seen nationwide. Think about the functions of their keen ears, enormous paws, and feelings displayed by their tails. Wolves use their sensitive ears to hear great distances in order to communicate or locate prey. The creatures' large paws leave unmistakable trails. The wagging tail symbolizes happiness and success in a wolf's life. These characterizing aspects brought me to the similarity between wolf traits and the protection of wolves. The first step in protecting this species is to make the public hear the truth and disregard other myths. In using their "wolf ears", citizens can see the true creature and stop listening with the human ears, which are responsible for many untrue myths. People must face the fears that they feel towards wolves and learn how noble and wise these canines truly are. The misinterpretation of the "bloody killer" has resulted in a significant reduction in population. Many individuals have come to the realization that wolves are not the savage beasts they are portrayed to be; they have brought others into following in their paw prints to protect the species.

RE: Farley Mowat - Stating the Obvious
Hi, I apologize for jumping into this debate without seeing the original post, but I would just like to state the obvious in that the acceptance by Canadians of what Farley had to say should be fair warning to all against the blind acceptance of anything without the corroboration of independent parties. In Canada, Farley Mowat is now the object of scorn and ridicule, which is too bad because he really is a fine writer. Maybe, at one time he had something legitimate to say but now who's going to believe him. Farley let his artistic license masquerade as fact and his credibility has suffered for it.

Kanadalainen alkuteos: Never Cry Wolf 1963

Ensimmäiset nelijalkaiset, jotka tutkijamme kohtasi, eivät olleet susia, vaan neljätoista kookasta ja hurjaa huskya, joittenka ylläpitämä hirvittävä ulvahdusten, haukahdusten ja vingahdusten kuoro kuulosti suunnilleen tältä;

The San Francisco Examiner His latest book, Farfarers: Before the Norse , compiles a lifetime of research as a naturalist and a biologist to reconstruct the story of a forgotten people of the Hudson Bay area. Provocative and controversial, this skillfully constructed book is sure to spark lively debate. Once again Mowat persuades readers to rethink the origins of themselves and the world around them. Mowat, Farley
Farley Mowat fonds. 1924-2001; predominant 1947-2000. 40.7 m of textual records and other materials. Farley Mowat was born on 12 May 1921 in Belleville, Ont. and educated at the University of Toronto. In 1952 he published People of the Deer, a book about the Ihalmiut people of the Barrenlands, the first of his many books with a northern theme. Other popular Mowat themes are stories that involve the sea, and/or Newfoundland and the protection of the environment and all living creatures. He is a man of strong opinions who has described himself as a "rampant nationalist" and a "story-teller who is more concerned with reaching his audience than with garnering kudos from the arbiters of literary greatness." Among the many honours and awards that he has received is an honorary doctorate from McMaster University in 1994. Books have been catalogued seperately. A listing of books that accompanied the fifth accrual is available in the master file.

Mowat, Farley.
Rescue the Earth! Conversations with the Green Crusaders. Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1990. Citizens are supposed to be active in society, not simply as informed voters but as people involved in issues and problems that go beyond the strictly political. One of the increasingly important areas for citizen action concerns the protection of the environment. In this book, the well known Canadian writer, Farley Mowat, interviews a wide variety of Canadian environmentalists, ranging from the animal liberation movement to people who work within the existing political system. Though the focus of the book is on the environment, it also shows the many ways in which citizens can be active in society. In its own way, the book serves as a text in the practice of citizenship.
