Paul Delvaux: The Village of the Mermaids Oil on canvas, 1942 Lisel Mueller Who is that man in black, walking
away from us into the distance?
The painter, they say, took a long time
finding his vision of the world. The mermaids, if that is what they are
under their full-length skirts,
sit facing each other
all down the street, more of an alley,
in front of their gray row houses.
They all look the same, like a fair-haired
order of nuns, or like prostitutes
with chaste, identical faces. How calm they are, with their vacant eyes, their hands in laps that betray nothing. Only one has scales on her dusky dress. It is 1942; it is Europe, and nothing fits. The one familiar figure is the man in black approaching the sea, and he is small and walking away from us.

Pulitzer for poetry ends obscurity
Star of neglected art is thrust into the spotlight
By Lindsey Tanner, Associated Press writer
Lisel Mueller is a shining star in a forgotten galaxy. You won't see her name on any marquee; her sad-eyed face lined with the wisdom and burdens of age would blend into any crowd.
But her words, painstakingly pulled from her heart, brighten the pages of books on dusty shelves in neglected corners of libraries and bookstores.
Lisel Mueller is a poet, a profession she politely calls "a minority art." One colleague more bluntly declares it "the dog meat of the art world."
At exactly 2:15 p.m. on April 8, she was thrust into the spotlight.
A shrill telephone ring jarred the tranquillity of Ms. Mueller's Lake Forest, Ill., cottage beyond a dead-end road in horse country north of Chicago. A Western Union operator read a two-line telegram from Columbia University: "You were awarded the Pulitzer poetry prize today. Congratulations."
"It's nice to deliver good news for a change," the operator added.
It took more than 30 years for a measure of fame to find Ms. Mueller, 73, who published her first poetry book in 1965.

Andy Jen ALIVE AND TOGETHER: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS. BY LISEL MUELLER Baton Rouge and London: Louisiana State University Press, 1996. The Private Life , the 1981 National Book Award for The Need to Hold Still , and the 1990 Carl Sandburg Prize for Waving from Shore . This collection won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Alive and Together , with a contemplation that carries throughout the book: Speaking of marvels, I am alive together with you, when I might have been alive with anyone under the sun, or the whore of a Renaissance pope or a peasant wife with not enough food and not enough love, with my children Throughout this volume, Mueller questions the reasons for existence, the randomness of life, and celebrates being a woman. Sometimes, When the Light Sometimes, when the light strikes at odd angles and pulls you back into childhood and you are passing a crumbling mansion completely hidden behind old willows or an empty convent guarded by hemlocks and giant firs standing hip to hip, you know again that behind the wall

Doctor, you say there are no haloes
around the streetlights in Paris
and what I see is an aberration
caused by old age, an affliction.
I tell you it has taken me all my life
to arrive at the vision of gas lamps as angels,
to soften and blur and finally banish
the edges you regret I don't see,
to learn that the line I called the horizon
does not exist and sky and water, so long apart, are the same state of being. Fifty-four years before I could see Rouen cathedral is built of parallel shafts of sun, and now you want to restore my youthful errors: fixed notions of top and bottom, the illusion of three-dimensional space, wisteria separate from the bridge it covers. What can I say to convince you the Houses of Parliament dissolve night after night to become the fluid dream of the Thames? I will not return to a universe of objects that don't know each other, as if islands were not the lost children of one great continent. The world
