Marcia Muller

arcia Muller is the author of more than twenty novels and many short mystery stories. She has also established a brilliant reputation as an anthologist and critic of mystery fiction. In 1993 she was awarded the Private Eye Writers of America Life Achievement Award, and Wolf in the Shadows was nominated for the 1994 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Crime Novel and won the Anthony Boucher Award. She lives with her husband, mystery writer Bill Pronzini, in northern California. Marcia writes and tells us.... "My first novel (written at age 12) saw a first printing of 5 copies on my Junior Steno typewriter. My relatives are hold them for purposes of blackmail. "My creative writing instructor at the University of Michigan told me I'd never become a writer. "My first Sharon McCone novel, Edwin of the Iron Shoes, killed the mystery list at David McKay Company. "In order to keep up with McCone, I've learned to fly. Imagine a person who's afraid of heights soaring in something that resembles a matchbox with wings at 6500 feet! "In researching for books, I've: almost been arrested by an INS agent for straying too close to the US-Mexico border; suffered an overnight trip in what I swear must've been a broom closet on Amtrak; nearly frozen in northern Minnesota (-50 degrees); nearly melted in the California desert (+112 degrees); tried, and almost succeeded, to shoot myself in the foot with a .357 Magnum.

Question: Since Sharon McCone works in San Francisco, was it hard to get the flavor of the city in the books?
Marcia Muller: It's extremely easy to get the flavor of the city because San Francisco is a place that lends itself to description. It's the city of many small enclaves; each with distinctive flavor. When I write about it, the city becomes a secondary character in the novel. Question: Did you read a lot of Dashiell Hammett before you wrote about a San Francisco detective?
Marcia Muller: I read the Maltese Falcon. The primary influence on my fiction was the Santa Barbara writer Ross Macdonald. There were interesting parallels between my life and his. We both have advanced degrees from the University of Michigan. Neither of us is a native Californian. He described the state beautifully and I felt he brought a fresh perception to it because of it being something new to him. Question: In 'Both Ends of the Night', Sharon went a lot of places. Was it tough doing the research for so many locations?

The Broken Promise Land
by Marcia Muller
The Women's Press £5.99
Marcia Muller
continues to produce some of the best female PI novels around. In The Broken Promise Land , Sharon McCone enters the highly strung, cut-throat world of the rock business in an attempt to help top country star, Ricky Savage, who appears to be the victim of sabotage - both of his career and of his 18 year old marriage to Sharon’s sister Charly. Ricky has been getting notes, all with the same message, "what have you done with my song", but with unnerving regularity, and increasingly bizarre emphasis.
The culprit is finally unmasked, but we’re not given the comfort of a "twisted" mind as explanation for the bizarre and vindictive behaviour. Instead, Muller leaves us to ponder on the responsibility individuals have for their actions and the effects they have on others, and to recognise that the instigators of desperate acts are often as much a victim themselves. "Dead Midnight"
"Two People with connections to InSite had vanished - one voluntarily, the other maybe not. Had Tessa Remington, like Jody Huston expressed fear for her life?" It's a case that private eye Sharon McCone seriously doesn't want to take. The parallels between Robert Nagasawa's suicide and that of her own brother's months earlier are too heart wrenching. They force her to think of her own reactions after her brother's death, and the regret s and anger she has. It also makes her the perfect detective for the job. She is able to empathize with the family, with their anger and sadness. The Nagasawa family , with its Japanese roots, is familiar with a lawsuit that was upheld in Tokyo, where a family sued a company for killing their son though overwork. They know Robert's job had terrible pressures and want to follow this route. Sharon's job is to gather evidence for the suit.

"Point Deception"
"We never did talk about that night again, not until last Saturday when Jude had that real bad seizure and was afraid another one would be the end of her. Yeah, she told me about the murders and the secret she kept all those years. But she sure didn't tell me anything as scary as what I remembered today." Point Deception is a very good mystery. This genre, particularly where a woman cop is concerned, is getting harder and harder to do inventively. Muller does an impressive job of taking a fairly straightforward mystery and skewing it into an unpredictable direction. The idea that so many people including both main characters saw the murder victim before her demise and didn’t help her really struck me. How many people have I passed along the road, and never stopped for, thinking, "Oh, it looks like she has a cell phone," or, "I'm just a lone woman, what can I do to help? Might get myself killed...." It just doesn't bear thinking about, does it?
