Marcia Muller Sunset magazine and then freelanced feature articles for various publications. She also partnered an editorial services firm, Invisible Ink, with another aspiring mystery author, Julie Smith. Muller published her first mystery, Edwin of the Iron Shoes , in 1977. The novel introduced Sharon McCone, investigator for the All Souls Legal Cooperative in San Francisco. Muller first conceived Sharon McCone in 1971. The character combines the first name of a college roommate (Sharon Delano) and the last name of a former head of the CIA, the late John McCone. The first McCone manuscript remains unpublished. It was so bad, according to Muller, that she now keeps it under lock and key. Both Ends of the Night (Mysterious Press, July 1997). Muller has had a long time professional association with another Bay Area mystery author, Bill Pronzini. Both before and after their 1992 marriage, Muller and Pronzini jointly edited a number of anthologies and collaborated on mystery and suspense novels. In 1986 they published . The softly rounded hills that encircled the amphitheater were edged with pinkish gold, but their slopes were still dark and forbidding. They reminded me of a herd of humpbacked creatures huddling together while they waited for the warmth of the morning sun; I could imagine them stretching and sighing with relief when its rays finally touched them. I would have given a lot to have daylight bring me that same sense of relief, but I doubted that would happen. It had been a long, anxious night since I'd arrived here the first time, over twelve hours before. Returning was a last-ditch measure, and a long shot at best. 1 drove up the blacktop road to where it was blocked by a row of posts and got out of the car. The air was chill; I could see my breath. Somewhere in the distance a lone bird called, and there was a faint, monotonous whine that must have had something to do with the security lights that topped the chain-link fence at intervals, but the overall silence was heavy, oppressive. I stuffed my hands into the pockets of my too-light suede jacket and started toward the main entrance next to the box office. As I reached the fence, a stocky, dark-haired man stepped out of the adjacent security shack and began unlocking the gate. Roy Canfield, night supervisor for the pavilion. He'd been dubious about what I'd suggested when I'd called him from San Francisco three quarters of an hour ago, but had said he'd be glad to cooperate if I came back out here. Canfield swung the gate open and motioned me through one of the turnstiles that had admitted thousands to the Diablo Valley Clown Festival the night before.

Gute Serien machen Spaß: Die Figuren wachsen dem Leser ans Herz, und ein neuer Roman der Reihe ist wie ein Wiedersehen mit guten, alten Freunden. Manchmal allerdings entwickeln sich Serien auch hochgeschätzter Autoren zu einem starren Korsett, und im Prinzip zitieren sich die Romane nur noch selbst. Spannend ist es in jedem Fall, gestandenen Krimiautoren bei ihren Serien-Ausbrüchen zuzuschauen. Marcia Muller ist bekannt für ihre Reihe um Sharon McCone, Privatdetektivin aus San Francisco, der die amerikanische Autorin seit nunmehr einem Vierteljahrhundert knapp zwei Dutzend Romane gewidmet hat. McCone-Fans kommen mit dem jüngst auf Deutsch erschienenen Roman »Dunkle Schatten« nicht ganz auf ihre Kosten, denn die Hauptfigur heißt Rhoda »Rho« Swift und ist Deputy im Sheriff's Department des imaginären nordkalifornischen Küstenkaffs Signal Port. Signal Port hat eine dunkle Geschichte: Vor dreizehn Jahren hatte ein Unbekannter in einer Künstlerkolonie im entlegenen Cascada Canyon fünf Erwachsene und drei Kinder erschossen, das Massaker war nie aufgeklärt worden. Für diesen Misserfolg hatte man nicht zuletzt die junge und unerfahrene Polizistin Rhoda Swift verantwortlich gemacht: Rhoda, die als Erste am Tatort eingetroffen war, habe Zeugenaussagen nicht gründlich aufgenommen, den Ort des schaurigen Verbrechens nicht gesichert und Spuren verwischt. Auch für verschwundenes Beweismaterial hat man ihr die Schuld gegeben.
