Morrow's best known for the classic weird collection you can see that book's binding in the Art Nouveau Ghost gallery. Bill Morrow found H. Rider Haggard's Lost Race novels infections. His foray into the form was Lentala of the South Seas (Stokes, 1908) featuring an Oceanic people with an Ayesha-like ruler. The gorgeous pictorial boards inlaid color portrait over embossed totemic beast as well as the interior color plates, are the work of Maynard Dixon. Rosa Campbell Praed's Fugitive Anne (Fenno, 1904) is one of the finer Haggardesque tales, with Anne becoming a new Ayesha when abandoned among the Atlantean/ Mayan Lost Race who worship a monstrous tortoise. The book also features several unusual plates including a full color frontis, by Clare Angell. As a little-known aside, the intercalated poem "Hymn to Xibal, Lord of Death" was written by Mrs. Praed's lover of many years, Nancy Harwood. Leo E. Miller's

Chapter XV TALBOT MUNDY PAGES EVOLUTION Tides in the ocean of stars and the infinite rhythm of space;
Cycles on cycles of aeons adrone on an infinite beach;
Pause and recession and flow, and each atom of dust in its place
In the pulse of eternal becoming; no error, no breach
But the calm and the sweep and the swing of the leisurely, measureless roll
Of the absolute cause, the unthwarted effect and no haste,
And no discord, and nothing untimed in a calculus ruling the whole;
Unfolding; evolving; accretion; attrition; no waste.
Planet on planet a course that it keeps, and each swallow its flight;
Comet's ellipse and grace-note of the sudden firefly glow; Jewels of Perseid splendor sprayed on summer's purple night; Blossom adrift on the breath of spring; the whirl of snow; Grit on the grinding beaches, spume of the storm-ridden wave Hurled on the north wind's ice-born blast to blend with the tropic rain; Hail and the hissing of torrents; song where sapphire ripples lave The crest of thousand-fathom reefs upbuilt beneath the main.

-Talbot Mundy, 1914 Talbot Mundy: Master of the Mystical Adventure http://www.ficom.net/members/ditch/mundybio.htm Talbot Mundy was born William Lancaster Gribbon in London, 1879. His father was Walter Galt Gribbon, an English businessman, and his mother was Margaret Lancaster Gribbon of Nanty-Glo, in Wales. Young William seemed destined from the start to be the family "black sheep", especially when compared with his younger brother Walter Harold Gribbon (1881 - 1944), who became a distinguished soldier and dipliomat. It seems ironic that Harold Gribbon was just the sort of heroic figure that Willie would later portray in his early fiction. After a singularly undistinguished record at Rugby School, Willie ran off to Germany and joined a circus. After his return, from Germany, William Gribbon left Britain to work as a relief worker in Baroda in India. He arrived in March 1999, and worked in Baroda for a little over about over a year when he was struck by a bout of malaria, and returned to England in April 1900.(1)

Essays from "The Theosophical Path" by Talbot Mundy
An Answer to Correspondents
By Talbot Mundy
January 1925 I admit it was a greatly daring editor who first published OM as a serial in Adventure a magazine which, though it stands for manliness, omits religious subjects as a rule. It was a daring firm of publishers who brought the story out in book-form last November. OM treats of a mystery that to one half of the world, the whole of the eastern hemisphere, is concrete fact, however many explanations of it may be current; whereas to the western half it sounds not mystery so much as a mere fairy-tale. And it is the western half of the world that buys books in English. However, both the magazine and the book publishers now admit that their daring must have been a sort of inspiration; while I, the author of the story, have been swamped under a mass of correspondence, to the greater part of which I have not yet had time to reply (and to none of it adequately). The amazing part of it is this: that among all of the hundreds of letters I have received about the book, not one finds fault with it. I had expected to be deluged with abuse and ridicule! I wrote the book from knowledge; but I did not know there were so many people in the western hemisphere not only willing but apparently quite eager to accept an explanation of life's handicap based solely on what Asia calls the Ancient Wisdom. I am almost tempted to believe perhaps to hope that prejudice and dogma are not after all so firmly seated on the throne of Christianity as the professional religionists would have us think.

    THE HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE ACCESSIONS LIST
    compiled by Rusty Burke BACK TO REH BOOKSHELF HOMEPAGE This list was kept in a ledger book which had apparently been previously used for accounting purposes. The list used available space on each page. Page numbers are stamped on the top outside corner of the page. Accession numbers are stamped next to titles, in the right-hand column of each page. Pages 21 and 22, while containing a few titles that might conceivably have been of interest to Howard (some Dickens titles, "Joan of Arc," some Emerson, Rex Beach's The Ne'er-Do-Well ), do not seem to me to begin the listing, as these titles are sprinkled among many others clearly academic or religious. Entries in a different hand appear at the top of page 23, which include Sinclair Lewis's Main Street and Stewart and Clark's Constitution and Government of Texas Following these two titles, however, a different hand takes over the listing, with

Certainly it isn't based on any early reading, because some of that consisted of MacCauley's 'Lays of Ancient Rome' from which flag-waving lines I should have drawn some Roman patriotism, it seems. Exclusive Hardcover Cloth Edition Take a hair-raising trek through old Tibet and track down the mystery of Life itself

    Price: $29.95
    Mundy's own life was a hair-raising tale. Born in 1879, he quit school to join the circus, then spent years "tramping around" in India, China and Singapore. He poached ivory in Africa, drilled oil in Mexico — and was very nearly beaten to death by gangsters in New York City! Only then did he settle down and write his famous "mystical adventures." And of these, the very greatest is OM: The Secret of Ahbor Valley It's set amid the mountains and monasteries of old Tibet...the one place on earth that fascinated Mundy most of all. Here you'll meet fiction's most dashing spy, the unforgettable Cottswold Ommony. You'll follow his footsteps as he scales the heights of the Himalayas, in search of a gigantic jewel and his own long-lost sister... And then, in the strangest twist of all, you'll watch this wild quest become a Journey of Enlightenment. As he meets a wise Tibetan Lama and discovers the path called "the Middle Way," our secret agent lays bare a mystery that has baffled mankind for millennia.
