Defence of Poetry 1998:
Les Murray
A defence of poetry
Les Murray In poetry, our human consciousness, body and dreams are fused, says Les Murray. “If we accept the notion that human beings are fundamentally poetic, rather than rational or irrational, it has some interesting consequences.” All of us here today presumably believe in poetry, so let start this talk with some. I wrote this poem titled ‘The Trances’ in 1996. The Trances (from Subhuman Redneck Poems, 1996, Carcanet, Manchester) Our art is very ancient. That won’t necessarily save it, if it’s endangered, but it does give it a certain weight, and a linkage to times beyond our own. The continent on which I live was ruled by poetry for tens of thousands of years, and I mean it was ruled openly and overtly by poetry. Only since European settlement in 1788 has it been substantially ruled by prose. The sacred law which still governs the lives of traditional Aborigines is carried by a vast map of song-poetry attached to innumerable mythic sites. Each group ‘sings’ the tract of country it occupies, just as each initiated person sings the ceremonial songs of the holy places for which he or she is responsible within that territory. A person may unselfconsciously say ‘That mountain is my mother: it is her ancestor and mine; it is the body of our ancestor, and the story we sing and enact there is her body. We are her body, too, and the songs are her body, and the ceremonies are her body. That is the Aboriginal Law.’

Add to a Notebook Les Murray Leslie Allan Murray was born October 17, 1938, in Bunyah, New South Wales, Australia. He attended the University of Sydney and served in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve. His most recent book, Fredy Neptune: A Novel in Verse (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1999), centers around the picaresque life of German-Australian sailor Friedrich Boettcher, a kind of Nordic hero who witnesses and records, in the demotic style, the foibles of his age. His previous collection, Subhuman Redneck Poems , was awarded the 1996 T. S. Eliot Prize. Murray has said that he has a "vital interest in giving utterance and form to hitherto unexpressed elements of Australian mind and character" while drawing inspiration from "Australian landscape, folklore, history, war, technology, deserts." Editor of Quadrant Magazine, Murray has given readings, lectures and talks in Australia, Britain, Europe, and the United States. Murray resides in his native Bunyah. Les Murray was in Toronto to give a reading at the Harbourfront Authors Series. You’re mentioned in an interview with Peter Porter in an earlier edition of this journal [Issue #2]. I would be, he’s rather obsessed with me and I’ll tell you why. He had a whore of a time at school. The dreadful treatment he got was from bush boys, big kids off cattle stations. It doesn’t compute in his mind that a bloke like that can be a poet. I’m a case in his mind of something that does not compute and therefore should not exist. Being an honest man, and a kind one, he faces the anomaly, and has been generous in promoting it, too. What about this distinction between Boeotian and Athenian poetry?
