Subhuman Redneck Poems A Vivid Steady State The Vernacular Republic . It marked one of those occasions when a personal literature became a public statement. The process of publication was a political act, and also an historical one, in the sense that it made concrete the long-term conflicts in Australian literature regarding urban and rural tensions. Lawrence Bourke says, Murray writes of The Macquarie Dictionary Translations from The Natural World The poem that for me captures not only the Murray voice but that of the Australian psyche is from his most recent book Subhuman Redneck Poems

about this title Les Murray is amongst the most gifted poets writing today. His multifaceted talents have received high praise both in Australia and beyond. But he has also proved a controversial figure, whose poetry strays across the boundaries of political and cultural debate. His version of republicanism has caused heated argument about the future direction of Australia as we move out of the shadow of our colonial past. about the author Steven Matthews is Reader in English at Oxford Brookes University. list of contents Series Editor's Foreword

TO MARS BY A-BOMB Wednesday 26 March Listen to an interview with Freeman Dyson YEHUDI MENUHIN "I can only remember wanting to be a musician. I can't remember anything before that" Les Murray b1938 Back to audio clips Les Murray grew up on a small dairy farm in the Outback of New South Wales and was locally educated. He gained entrance to Sydney University but left before graduation. After a period in Europe, he returned to Sydney and completed his degree in 1969, but retained a distrust of formal education. From 1973-79, Murray worked as an editor of the influential Poetry Australia. He also played a part in redirecting Australian tastes in poetry with such anthologies as the New Oxford Book of Australian Verse (1986). Murray lives on a farm not far from his childhood home and much of his work reflects the landscapes, people and values of rural Australia. The characters in his poems are typically farmers, impoverished pioneers, workers in sheep stations and sugar mills. Murray's poetry is strongly affected by his Catholic faith, but he also has a deep interest in Aboriginal culture, which he calls the "senior culture". His poem The Buladelah-Taree Holiday Song Cycle, in the collection Ethnic Radio (1977), uses traditional Aboriginal verse forms to describe modern white Australians on holiday. The Boys Who Stole the Funeral (1979) describes the theft of a body from a Sydney mortician's parlour for burial in the dead man's native place. Subhuman Redneck Poems (1996) celebrates "redneckery" and was received with acclaim, winning the prestigious T S Eliot Prize. Fredy Neptune (1999) is a mythic verse narrative describing the adventures of a German-Australian sailor during World War I.

While traces of the man known for his rugged, political poems can still be found, his new work is quieter, more pensive and sometimes tender. This change in attitude resonates with Murray’s survival, in 1996, of a three-week-long coma. These poems retain and reflect the silent wonder of an intensive care ward, while the phrase “conscious and verbal” is taken from a newspaper article, which used the words to describe Murray during his recovery. Murray began his career writing poems about the experience of the poor, the rural, and the marginalized of contemporary Australia. His first book of poems

Les Murray Les Murray - Australia's leading living poet
Les Murray was born in the NSW coastal town of Bunyah in 1938. He was a fat and unhappy youth who was marginalised by his peers. He married a Turkish woman in 1962, and worked as a public servant in Canberra until 1962. On retirement he decided to become a full time poet and published his first book of poems The Ilex Tree in 1965. He bought back his familiy's original farm land in 1975 and returned to live on the farm in 1975. He refuses to accept goverment support for his poetry, and is a highly political driving force in Australia. He is considered to be one of the best living poets in the world.

Gedichte, deutsch: (Hanser) Midsummer Ice Hochsommereis Cattle egret Kuhreiher Midsummer Ice Remember how I used
to carry ice in from the road
for the ice chest, half running,
the white rectangle clamped in bare hands
the only utter cold
in all those summer paddocks? How, swaying, I'd hurry it inside
en bloc and watering, with the butter
and the wrapped bread precarious on top of it?
"Poor Leslie," you would say,
"your hands are cold as charity -"
You made me take the barrow but uphill it was heavy. We'd no tongs, and a bag would have soaked and bumped, off balance. I loved to eat the ice, chip it out with the butcher knife's grey steel. It stopped good things rotting and it had a strange comb at its heart, a splintered horizon rife with zero pearls. But you don't remember. a doorstep of numbed creek water the colour of tears but you don't remember. I will have to die before you remember. Hochsommereis in all den Sommerfeldern? Wie ich es schwankend und eilig trug

Les Murray is renowned for his rough style, biting humor, verbal inventiveness and love of nature. Murray often writes about the unique Australian landscape, man's destruction of the planet, and the working-class people of his native country. "the most arresting and angular poet to come out of Australia" in many years, while finding pleasure in his "burly, somewhat shambling style. . .odd and clumsy and hard to categorize, like a platypus." Poetry Magazine
"With armloads of international awards, over a dozen collections of poems and essays, and a spectacular verse-novel. . .the plainspoken and combative Murray is by most reckonings Australia's leading poet." Publishers Weekly Poems the Size of Photographs (2002). As the title suggests, the poems are short and imagistic, most of them fewer than 20 lines long. The book itself has square dimensions like a large photo. ". . .one of Murray's most consistently enjoyable books."

THE OCTAVE OF ELEPHANTS
Bull elephants, when not weeping need, wander soberly alone.
Only females congregate and talk, in a seismic baritone: Dawn and sundown we honour you, Jehovah Brahm,
who allow us to intone our ground bass in towering calm. Inside the itchy fur of life is the sonorous planet Stone
which we hear and speak through, depending our flugelhorn. Winds barrel, waves shunt shore, earth moans in ever-construction
being hurried up the sky, against weight, by endless suction. We are two species, male and female. Bulls run to our call.
We converse. They weep, and announce, but rarely talk at all. As presence resembles everything, our bulls reflect its solitude and we, suckling, blaring, hotly loving, reflect its motherhood. Burnt-maize-smelling Death, who brings the collapse-sound bum-bum

Poetry saved my life twice – Les Murray
By Marilyn Kerjean Poetry is Les Murray’s livelihood. It has also been his lifesaver a couple of times – once when he was at the end of adolescence and then when he was in his 50s. His poem Predawn in Health emerged from the “ravages of depression” he experienced at those times, he says. It featured in his latest book, Collected Poems 1961–2002, a 576-page tome that Murray has dedicated to the glory of God. “This book is the most accurate record of my work that exists,” he said at its launch, without fanfare, at Gleebooks, in Glebe. “A book like this tests you. “It stands up there in front of you and gives an unblinking view of your performance.” Murray paid tribute to poetry, to friends he has “stolen lines from” for his poems, and to his readers. He then read several of them, describing their origins and sometimes their autobiographical significance.” “Poetry had many attractions for me when I found it,” he said.
