Biography of Ogden Nash
A master of light, whimsical, and sometimes nonsensical verse, Nash started his writing career at Doubleday Page Publishers, where he wrote his first children's book with Joseph Algers, The Cricket of Garador , in 1925. After six years of writing advertising copy as an editor and publicist at Doubleday, Nash claimed, he began his career in humorous poetry by scribbling one afternoon. His scribbles were to become a poem called Spring Comes to Murray Hill , which he threw away. Upon some thought, however, he retrieved it from the wastebasket and sent it to The New Yorker . His first piece of satiric verse was published in 1930. After "Murray Hill" Nash's work began to appear in other periodicals. He was prolific enough that he published a collection of his poetry, Hard Lines , in 1931. Hard Lines sold out seven printings in its first year and catapulted Nash into his role as the master of light verse. In 1932 Nash left Doubleday to join the editorial staff of The New Yorker . His steady and lengthy affiliation with the magazine helped establish its distinctive tone and sense of humor. According to poet Archibald MacLeish, Nash "altered the sensibility of his time." Even after the widespread reception of his first book, however, Nash still insisted that the whole thing was an accident. He had already become quite popular with the general public through his work in

Picture courtesy of the United States Postal Service Poet Ogden Nash is to be honored with the first stamp to be issued at the new first-class rate of 37 cents. It will come out about August 18, 2002 to honor the centennial of his birth (100 years after his birth). A gentle satirist, Nash poked fun at human shortcomings without pessimism. He wrote on many subjects, but all of his poems expressed his dry wit and demonstrated his playfulness with language. Poems by Ogden Nash Photo courtesy of Linell Nash Smith and Isabel Nash Eberstadt Born on August 19, 1902 into a family that prized education, Ogden Nash was the next to youngest of five children (two girls and three boys). His maternal grandfather was a renowned educator and devout feminist in Louisville, Kentucky who started his own school and educated his own three daughters who applied in the 1870's to Harvard and other East Coast Ivy League colleges using only their initials for their first names on the applications. The daughters all were accepted until it was discovered they were women! This is important because it demonstrates the importance placed on a complete education by Nash's family, the basis for Nash's lifelong love of the classics, languages (including French, German, and Latin), and writing. When he was 7 years old, Nash developed a serious eye infection that required he stay in bed in a darkened room for nearly a year. He was not permitted to use his eyes, so his mother not only read to him to help pass the time but also took on his schooling. This latter activity developed an extraordinary memory that would serve Nash well in his adult life as a poet and writer.

Ogden Nash is one of the few American humorous poets. He became very famous during his life for his funny work. His many poems are loved by both children and adults. I hope that after you read this you will like his poetry as much as I did. (Frederic) Ogden Nash was born in Rye, New York, on August 19, 1902 . He went to a school in Newport, Rhode Island. Later he attended Harvard University for one year but left because of family financial problems. He decided to get a job. He became a teacher at his old school in Rhode Island, which was called St. George's School, but quit because of stress from his fourteen-year-old students. Ogden Nash then became a salesman, then an adviser, then an editorial staff worker. Then he became a famous poet. He got to be on radio and television. He died on May 19, 1971,in Baltimore, Maryland. Ogden Nash's strongest style in his writing was humor, but he had many others. One of his techniques was to write some of his lines of uneven lengths. He also misspelled and made up words to make them rhyme and sound humorous, which was strange since he went to Harvard, a very serious school. He often wrote about animals, which I like. It makes poems more interesting. Here is a poem of his: The Eel
    I don't mind eels
    Except as meals.
