Links About Peter Nicholson Nicholson dropped out of Law at Melbourne University in 1969 because he wanted a job where you could sit and read the newspaper. His first break came when a small national paper, the Nation Review, paid him $5 for a scratchy cartoon about a barely recognisable prime minister dressed as a lion tamer. Soon he was earning a living as a freelancer doing cartoons for various papers, and animated political cartoons for the ABC with his 16mm Bolex and homemade animation stand. One day in 1976 the Financial Review offered him a job doing daily cartoons and six months later The Age in Melbourne recruited him. Nicholson worked at The Age for the next seventeen years. He was part of a famous stable of cartoonists that included Bruce Petty, Michael Leunig, John Spooner, Ron Tandberg, Les Tanner, Arthur Horner and Cathy Wilcox. One of his early cartoons created a minor furore. Gough and Margaret Whitlam were making a widely reported trip to China, when there was an big earthquake. Nicholson's cartoon showed them cuddled up in bed, with Margaret asking Gough "Did the earth move for you too dear?" Many people wrote to the editor, saying they would cancel their subscriptions, because the cartoon was in such poor taste by the standards of the day. Whitlam, who had a robust sense of humour himself, announced he liked the cartoon, and later would refer to the whole incident as if it were evidence of his potency.

Orpheus Ascending Poem and Essay A reassessment of Wagner and Wagnerism New South Wales Wagner Society 18th April, 1999 The opening paragraphs from 'Orpheus Ascending: a reassessment of Wagner and Wagnerism', are excerpted from a talk given by Peter Nicholson on 18th April, 1999 at the Goethe Institute in Sydney. Subsequently this talk was published in London in WAGNER who may be contacted at poetnic@yahoo.com There are several versions of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus. In the best known of these Orpheus goes down to the Underworld to seek the return of his wife Eurydice who had been killed by the bite of a snake. The lord of the Underworld agrees on the condition that Orpheus should not turn round and look at Eurydice until they reach the Upper World. The great singer and musician who could charm trees, animals and even stones could not survive this final and most perilous of temptations. He turns to look on his beloved wife and she is lost to him forever. Another version of the myth tells of Orpheus being torn to pieces by the Thracian women or Maenads; his severed head floated, singing, to Lesbos. And now, as our world prepares to beach itself on bread and circuses, to make the inevitable retrospectives that cannot but trivialise our history and experience, Wagner's dismembered head continues to sing, unheard by many and misunderstood by most. That beautiful yet volatile singing head with its Janus face, enigmatically poised between black holes and galaxies; that is the head we still find puzzling. And because our civilisation does not like puzzles, and wishes to rationalise whatever has provoked it to think or feel, our best critical efforts have reduced one of the greatest creative and cultural phenomenon of Western culture to manageable proportions.
