Terenure steal it to qualify but DLSP remain in Division 1
by Karl Johnson
DLSP 10
Terenure College 11
This AIB League Division 1 result at Kilternan on Saturday was not so much daylight robbery as grand larceny. Outgunned in terms of ideas, determination and, above all, territorial advantage, Terenure managed to snatch the spoils courtesy of an unforced error by a DLSP defender, a close-in line-out and a late, late unconverted try by prop Steve Barretto.
Even then, DLSP’s goal-kicking prop, Mark Kavanagh had the chance to win the match with a penalty goal attempt from 42 metres and in an area of glutinous mud, but his tentative effort was well short and wide.
But after the game, it was a case of sweetness and light all round in the packed clubhouse; DLSP are still in Division 1, after all, while Barretto’s try gave Terenure a home semi final against Lansdowne, a more appealing scenario than an away play-off against St Mary’s at Templeville Road, one imagines.
“We didn’t play really well,” said Gerry Murphy, Terenure’s director of coaching, afterwards, in a smiling understatement. “DLSP were impressive, but we did show resolve to hang on in there and get that try which clinched it.”
Still, Murphy won’t need to call upon his on undoubted astute talents to know that a major improvement will be needed, if Terenure are to overcome the Lansdowne hurdle at Lakelands Park next Sunday week. On Saturday, Terenure managed to get away with being on the back foot for virtually the entire second half. Admirable though it was, such a rearguard action would be more difficult to maintain against Lansdowne.

Research Notes 1971-72
Collected by Frank Fyfe and Phil Garland
Regarding the research done by Frank and myself, I can only take some of the credit...most of it goes to Frank (60%) I was an assistant in all this. We did most of the work in 1971 - 72. I'm forwarding this info to you as I believe much of Frank's research work over the years was destroyed after his recent passing and I believe it should be made available to anyone who's interested...certainly before it's too late or similar problems beset us. Where to begin with Bright Fine Gold details....? During the 1970s Frank Fyfe and I did a lot of research together into various N.Z. songs, so here is some of what we uncovered along the way. Philip Garland , Nov 2000
Fulton's 1880s lullaby
One of Frank's first informants was Rona Bailey - she obviously seemed like a good person to start with, but couldn't remember where she got the BFG verse from. However her co-researcher Bert Roth did, he said it came from the book

“Harp in the South” new repertory play OPENS ON MARCH "The Harp in the South", the first serious Australian play to be produced by the Broken Hill Repertory Society since “The Shifting Heart" will be presented at the Playhouse on March 20, for a seven night season. The play, written by well known Australian authoress and novelist Ruth Park, is set in a Sydney slum, and dea1s with the troubles of an Irish - Australian slum family. It accurately portrays the hopes and dreams of the family, including two teenage daughters, Dolour and Rowena, the mother, father, and grandmother, as well as the people with whom they come into con tact. "The Harp in the South” is produced by Kay McLachlan, who has produced two other plays for the Society since arriving in Broken Hill from Parkes about two years ago. Her two previous plays were "The Book of the Month," and "The Rape of the Belt." both successful comedies. Mrs. McLachlan feels that the play will be of particular interest to Broken Hill audiences, just as "The Shifting Heart" caused much interest and comment several years ago. The play has been produced in most Australian capital cities, and has had country productions in N.S.W. towns, and in Darwin.

Shannon on the double trail again
By Seamus Hayes Shannon are in the running for the Munster Pierce Purcell and Jimmy Bruen titles for the second successive year The Purcell team are already through to the Provincial decider which will take place at Thurles next month. The Bruen team will contest the North Munster final against Charleville next Thursday (May 31 ) at Castletroy. The Purcell team beat Roscrea in the North Munster final at Dromoland last Thursday. They won a tight match on a 3-2 scoreline and the members of the successful panel were Jim O'Brien and Jodie O'Connor; Pat Mc Grath and P.J. Ryan; Brian McGoey and John Morrissey; P. J. Moroney and Tim Crowe; Joe McGrath and Noel Purcell; Pat Keane and Des McDonnell; Brian Quinn, Seamus Twomey and Michael Hallinan while the team is managed by Liam Walsh who is assisted by Eugene Logan. At Lahinch last weekend, the Bruen team opened their campaign with a 4-1 win over Lahinch and they followed this up with a good win over Spanish Point o n Sunday morning. In the section final, they came up against Woodstock and the final score was in doubt to the very end in this one. The experience of having contested the Provincial final last year stood to the Shannon side and Michael McInerney's team came through for the win and a date with Charleville next week.

IRISH MOUNTAIN BIKE ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The results of this event will have a significant bearing on the selection of the team to travel to the World Bike-O Champs which are being held in France this July and for which a preliminary entry for a team of six men and four women has been made. So, dust off that old bike, knock up a map board, shave your legs and get out there! To make a weekend out of it, there is an event (foot-O), on Inch dunes on Sunday 14th - perfect training for the British Champs in the North three weeks later.

Who We Are
The Mountaineering Committee is made up of AMC members who volunteer their time and talent for climbing related activities. The committee meets each month except for July and August on a rotating schedule at the homes of committee members. New volunteers are always welcome! If you are interested in getting involved, email a member listed below to introduce yourself and let us know what you would like to do. Below is a partial list of our members and their self selected bios and photo. Pablo Acosta I am a relatively new member of the climbing community, having taken the rock program offered by this very committee in 2002, as well as the ice program in 2003. Became infected by the deadly climbinerus virus (for which there is no known cure) so I've been at it assiduously ever since. I have visited almost all the crags around the Metro Boston area with additional forays to New Hampshire, Connecticut and New York. I was fortunate enough to do some easy trad leads before the rock season drew to a close, but my highest achievement so far is the mastery of "Darcie's Direct" (5.15 X), the treacherous route that goes from the Quincy Quarries (site of regular Wednesday nights rock climbing) to the local watering hole. Bill Atkinson Began with the New York AMC in the 'Gunks in 1956, hooked the first day and climbing ever since. Added ice climbing in 1969. AMC Boston Chapter Mountaineering Chairman 1973-76, InterChapter MC Chairman 1977-79. American Alpine Club 1978; N.E. Section Chair 1997 to date.
