Toraware By Robert W. Norris, 1998, Set in 1980's Japan Touka Shobo, $11.95, ISBN #4-924527-93-9 Grade: F Sensuality: Subtle According to the translation, toraware is the Japanese word for obsession. I wonder what the Japanese word for boring is, because almost all the characters in this novel are self-obsessed navel-gazers. Harlan Cooper is an American who has served in Vietnam, been homeless in Seattle, and wandered through India. Now he is in Japan and has taken a postion as a teacher in a conversation school - a place where Japanese students go to brush up on their spoken English. Harlan becomes involved with two Japanese women. Yoshiko is a young woman who has tried to commit suicide. She has spent some time in Canada and feels totally disconnected from her family and society in general. She drinks too much, is very promiscuous, yet has a very deeply spiritual side to her. Sachiko is a young woman from an upper-class family who meets Harlan at the conversation school. She is trying to raise her score on her English test so she can go to graduate school in the United States. Sachiko looks on her relationship with Harlan as a sort of walk on the wild side on her part, and she really does not figure in the novel to any great extent. Frankly, most of this novel consists of either Harlan, or Yoshiko, or Harlan and Yoshiko lying around smoking cigarettes, drinking beer and thinking about how rotten life is and how terrible they feel. The neotropical orchid tribe Maxillarieae includes about 2600 species, roughly 10% of Orchidaceae. We use nrITS and trnL-F sequence data to clarify generic relationships within two problematic subtribes. Zygopetalinae are divided into a prominently-pseudobulbed clade/grade and a largely pseudobulbless clade (Huntleyinae Schltr.) including Dichaea and Cryptarrhena Chondrorhyncha is polyphyletic; we recognize Chondrorhyncha s.s., Chondroscaphe Warczewiczella , and several clades that will require generic names. Floral syndromes are homoplasious on the combined trees. Maxillariinae (sensu Dressler 1993) consists of broad Maxillaria (ca. 500 sp.) plus six minor genera ( Anthosiphon, Pityphyllum, Mormolyca, Chrysocycnis, Cyrtidiorchis, Trigonidium ). All the Buzz The Group Room radio program offers cancer-related conversation in an intimate setting. by Chrissie Castro People may no longer need to seek solace in a traditional support group setting to share their battles with cancer, but can go home, kick off their shoes and switch on their radios. With the arrival of the radio talk show The Group Room ", a space has been created where patients and their family members are not only put in contact with physicians and health care workers, but are encouraged to express their emotions. Every Sunday, for two hours, host Selma R. Schimmel reaches out to more than 30,000 listeners across the country with the help of an oncologist, specialists, and cancer patients and survivors. Schimmel and her guests field questions and moderate discussions that run the gamut of cancer care, from communicating with your physician to navigating the labyrinth of health care. While one show might be caller-driven, another will focus on a particular cancer, such as a broadcast about colorectal cancer with Robert W.
