Biblical and Theological Perspectives on Eschatology
In modern theology the "last things" of traditional Christian doctrine have largely been ignored or replaced with various metaphysical, psychological, or ethical reinterpretations of Christianity. This volume takes the biblical vision of the future seriously once again, explaining the significance of Christian eschatology for the faith and theology of the contemporary church.

169 pages / 6" x 9" THE STRANGE NEW WORD OF THE GOSPEL Re-Evangelizing in the Postmodern World This volume provides serious theological reflection on Christian missions within postmodern, post-Christian culture. In today's postmodern culture many people are turning to religion, but they are not necessarily finding their way back to the church. Most unbelievers in America and other Western countries are "post-Christians." Though baptized and brought up in the church, they no longer believe and practice the Christian faith. In such a time, the great challenge facing the church is

I am a Vietnam War conscientious objector, Japanese university teacher,
and author of expatriate novels and articles on teaching English as a
foreign language. My site includes my curriculum vitae, information on
my books, online articles, and a links page.
All of my teaching articles can be found in the CV section. Book cover
images, story summaries, blurbs, and chapter excerpts are in the books section. My two novels are "Looking for the Summer," the story of a conscientious objector's adventures and search for identity on the road from Paris to Calcutta in 1977, and "Toraware," a psychological study of the obsessive relationship of three misfits from different cultures in 1980s Kobe, Japan. Both books are available through Amazon.com. My online articles are about getting published in Japan and using the Internet to promote one's books. There is also a newspaper interview (in Japanese) and my Amazon.com interview in this section.

    ABOUT BOOMER CAFÉ

by Robert W. Norris (The year is 1983. The place is the Kobe-Osaka area. Harlan, a 33-year-old American drifter, has arrived in Japan seeking one more adventure and an escape from his past. Yoshiko, 23, has recently returned from a two-year stay in Canada, where her parents sent her to cure her rebellious and suicidal behavior. Yoshiko's Canadian friend Julie spent three months in Japan, but has had to go back to Canada. Harlan and Yoshiko have entered into a tentative relationship. The character of Harlan is drawn partially from the author's own experiences during his early years in Japan.) Yoshiko arrived at the Nishinomiya station a few minutes early and waited for Harlan near the ticket turnstiles. She wanted to talk with him, to explain about the changes she was going through. She saw him approaching. He had a happy look on his face. He passed through the turnstile. Yoshiko took his arm and they walked together to the platform and got on the next train. He said he had received a three-month extension on his visa that morning. Yoshiko was relieved to hear it. She would not have been able to bear losing both Julie and Harlan one after the other.

Looking For The Summer by Robert W. Norris
    Jacobyte Books
    reviewed by Christine Hall
During the waning years of the Ford administration, a rather unlikely alliance was struck-up between an American, an Iranian and an Afghani. The place of this chance encounter was at the front desk of the Hotel de Mines, where the two Asians were desperate to communicate with the clerk who spoke only French. The American, David Thompson, translated for them and the three become fast friends. This unspectacular first encounter begins the ultra-spectacular tale Looking For The Summer, Robert W. Norris' autobiographical novel of culture shock and identity crises in the 1970s. Within weeks of this chance meeting, the American protagonist would find himself traveling overland to Iran, and then on to Afghanistan, Pakistan and eventually India, where the tale reaches a hopeful conclusion amid the squalor and depravity of Calcutta. At first glance, it might seem that this is one of those calculated, dashed-out-overnight books which are a mainstay of the modern publishing industry, like one of the numerous biographies of Lady Di that appeared on the stands within days of her death. To jaded eyes, this is a novel too topical not to be contrived as newsstand fodder, since each of the four countries that Norris examines has been very much in the news since September 11th. However, a closer inspection reveals that this is merely a case of fantastical synchronicity, as this slim tome was first published nearly a year before the falling of the twin towers and America’s renewed interest in Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, et.al.
