  • On Monday, January 27, 2003, the Xenite.Org server was taken down for maintenance. Regrettably, we inadvertently wiped out the drive and lost all of our data. Although we have archived tens of thousands of pages of content, all user registrations for our forums and banner networks were lost, as were all VBulletin messages and all Internet Book List entries. Restoring the full network will require weeks, perhaps months, as we need to update content gradually and our staff is completely volunteer.
  • The forums at SF-FANDOM have been rebuilt. Old links will no longer take you directly to the forums you bookmarked.
  • We have restored our Xenite.Org News page so that you can stay current on all the changes going on around here (and are there a LOT!). We'd also like to point out that the Xenite and Herkulean Webmasters Association is actively seeking new directors to govern the association. Check out

24. Dani Zweig's Unnumbered Reviews #7: Andre Norton -- Part I
Unnumbered Reviews 7 andre norton Part I andre norton is one of the greats of science fiction and fantasy one of the writers who moulded and influenced an entire generation of readers.

Unnumbered Reviews #7: Andre Norton Part I
Andre Norton is one of the greats of science fiction and fantasy one of the writers who moulded and influenced an entire generation of readers. Her work suffers, however, from a severe case of Heinlein's Syndrome: If you didn't encounter it in your teens, you may not care much for it if you encounter it now. In Norton's case, this is primarily because most of her early books were juveniles. 'Juveniles' is a slippery term in this context, since for much of the genre's history, most of the stories and novels were read by a relatively young readership. Until the last couple of decades, however, very few authors were explicitly writing science fiction for a young readership. The conspicuous exceptions were Robert Heinlein and Andre Norton, and both exhibited the rare gift of writing for younger readers without writing down. Yet Heinlein's novels tended to stay with those readers after Norton's were (fondly) left behind. Because Andre Norton's novels were adventure stories, tales of wonder and imagination, but not books that challenged their readers intellectually or philosophically. They still made wonderful reading for a thirteen-year-old or a fifteen-year-old, though. The reason I've been referring to Norton's books in the past tense is that I'll be dwelling for the most part on her earlier novels, not her more recent ones. (For those, read "Part II", which I'm not planning to write.) That certainly leaves enough books to cover! Norton has written over a hundred books (and, with a librarian's neatness, has taken care to scatter the titles all through the alphabet).

"The ignorant say it is the casting of dragons, but that is not so." Amber out of Quayth Andre Norton Shared Worlds - Witch World A ndre Norton has captured the hearts and imaginations of readers for over thirty years. Sometimes categorized as a 'young adult' author Andre Norton's books and short stories know no age group. Her lands of time and space open doors to new realms of learning and awareness across generations. W itch World gives readers a chance to explore the age-old battle between Light and Dark. Protagonists and antagonists are adult, youth or child. Magic and technology are nicely integrated. Ms. Norton takes bits and pieces of eastern and western philosophies, folklore and scientific technologies, blends them lightly with every day experiences and comes up with a terrific common thread for all of her novels. ANDRE NORTON
In 1957, I discovered Andre Norton by coming across a copy of Star Born on the new books shelf in the children's room of the Wilmette [IL] Public Library. I never looked back. I checked out and read Norton after Norton, shared them with my mother, then my brother, then my sister, then my youngest brother. We would all quarrel over who got to read the newest one first, which was why I made sure to put bookplates in all my copies [I now have approximately 150]. When my daughter Meg started reading "chapter books", some of her first were Outside and Star Ka'at she even named her kittens Mer and Tiro. You can understand, therefore, when in 1983 Meg leased a mare to breed to Chapel Hill Elijah for a 4H project foal, and we decided to name horses for authors rather than register a prefix, we immediately wrote Andre Norton for her permission to name a foal for her. She graciously acceded, mentioning that she had been very impressed with Morgans when researching the U.S. Cavalry for her book Ride, Proud Rebel!

27. The Formulaic And Rites Of Transformation In Andre Norton's Magic Series
A short essay.
http://wpl.lib.in.us/roger/MAGIC.HTML
THE FORMULAIC AND RITES OF TRANSFORMATION IN ANDRE NORTON’S MAGIC SERIES Science Fiction for Young Adults . Ed. C.W. Sullivan III. Westport, CT: Greenwood, 1993. 37-45 Like many popular children's and juveniles' books, Andre Norton's are formulaic. Recurrent patterns like those used in the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Tom Swift series provide particular comfort to readers, one to which they return again and again. This phenomenon is not restricted to younger people. Comfort has vaulted the predictable puns of Piers Anthony's Xanth series onto the best-seller lists and rewarded Manly Wade Wellman's lock-step Silver John Chronicles with many readers. In fact, there is a strong case for fantasy literature and particularly its heroic form as formulaic prose: evil is abroad in the land, a hero and fellowship arise with the prerequisite wizard, a psychomachia occurs, and good is restored. So Andre Norton's high library circulation and sales, along with the translations of her works into numerous languages and numerous fans, indicate that her formidable, six-decade-long canon that began in 1934 with the boys' adventure The Prince Commands continues to draw an avid audience for its predictability as well as its craft. Further, as one of the pioneers of strong and credible female characters, her fiction has appeal to both genders (Schlobin

Andre Norton
Say the name to someone who's read her, and watch the flash in their eyes. There's something about Andre Norton. She calls herself an old-fashioned storyteller and, indeed, whether it's fantasy, science fiction, adventure, romance or any other genre of popular literature, she manages to capture the audience's attention in the gracious style of the long-gone bardic masters. This quality, acknowledged by both the readers and critics has given her the title of the Grand Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Born February 17, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio, Alice Mary Norton has always had an affinity to the humanities. She started writing in her teens, inspired by a charismatic high school teacher. First contacts with the publishing world led her, as many other contemporary female writers targeting a male-dominated market, to choose a literary pseudonym. In 1934 she legally changed her name to Andre Alice. The androgynous Andre doesn't really say "male," though it lets people jump to their own conclusions. She's often classified as a writer for young adults, but maybe that should be restated as for the "young-at-heart". Anyone, either gender, or any age, who enjoys great, emotional stories will find at least one segment of her enormous range of writing to treasure.

Lady Hernalth's Elvenbane Corner
This site is dedicated to my dearest Cat, with love.
I want to apologize for lack of recent updating. I've been caught up in personal issues that have taken a lot of my time. But I have started the sequel to Forevor! It will hopefully be up this month!
Hello, and welcome to my Elvenbane website. I'm so glad you dropped by! Well, now that you're here, you probably want to know what's here. And I can tell you truthfully, you won't find another site like this. I know. I've scoured the internet looking. The best site I've found, really the only site, is the online Halfblood Chronicles Encyclopedia. But the infomation there is very simple and to the point. This site has been years in the making really. It's existed in potentia for a while, I just never got off my butt to do it. Now I have. Technically, the first fan-fiction I ever wrote was for Elvenbane. I recieved the book for a birthday gift, and fell in love with the story. I've read it well over fifty times since then, and I don't think I'm stretching it too far to say I'm one of the biggest Elvenbane fans out there. This site proves it. Why do I love these books so much? I couldn't tell you. I just fell in love with the world, the characters, everything. And I had a need to continue the world and the characters. And so the stories began. Sadly, most were lost since I started before I had a computer. They are now in hybernation, trapped in the sleeping shell of my old word processer. But I've taken my ideas and restarted.

I did not compile this information. Early in 1997 Irene Harrison contacted me about attending Magic Carpet Con and we discussed my Andre Norton Web sites. She offered to provide me with some bibliographical information to include on my sites.
As my life goes, I lose about half the information people give to me, and this happened with the files Ms. Harrison supplied to me. In December 1997 she graciously emailed me an extensive (though fractional) part of her bibliographical database, which has been published. The information provided herein is derived from that file (though what you will see here is only a small part of what I received).
I include here a little bit more information than Ms. Harrison suggested I use, but I do so because I thought it would be of interest to fans in general. You will see that some of the information is now outdated, or by the time you find this site it may be. I may or may not have the time to try and bring it up-to-date, but my intention is to provide this list "as is".
I hope you find it useful.

by
RAYMOND H. THOMPSON
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA
23 MARCH 1991
When I discovered that Andre Norton was going to attend the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts in Florida, where I was giving a paper, I welcomed the opportunity to include her among the authors interviewed. After a panel discussion in which we were both involved, we tried to find a quiet corner where we could talk, but so many people wanted to speak to her that we had to put up with a number of interruptions, one of the penalties of her popularity among readers of science fiction and fantasy.
Norton's interest in Arthurian legend started early and continued long: Arthur makes a brief appearance in Huon of the Horn (New York: Harcourt, 1951), her adaptation of the medieval story; in Witch World (New York: Ace, 1963) the Siege Perilous transports the central hero to the Witch World of the title; in Steel Magic (Cleveland: World, 1965) three children enter Avalon where they recover the talismans of power stolen from Merlin, Arthur, and Huon of the Horn; one of the stories in
