Literature for Young People
Islamic Traditions and Muslim Cultures
Kay E. Vandergrift
Children's Literature Page “Obviously we can’t control all people in the world. But we can continue to remind ourselves of what is important and try to live in ways nourishing for human beings. It is most important to know about lives that seem, on the surface, unlike our own. We must remind ourselves and our children that the Middle East is a complicated center of dramatic cultural and religious history and the vast majority of people living there would love to be our friends.”                                                                         ~~Naomi Shihab Nye If we are to endure as human beings, we must learn as much as possible about others in our world. To that end, I have selected a beginning collection of books about Islamic traditions and Muslim culture for the very young, for older children, and for young adults, as well as those for parents and teachers. The stories, the poetry, the illustrations, the historical figures, and the folktales all contribute to that wonderful magic that transports readers to other places, other times, other worlds. Such reading can help young people integrate in their own lives the increased knowledge, deeper understanding, and a caring acceptance of others vital to all of humanity. Ahsan, M.M.

Naomi Shihab Nye: U.S.-Mideast history a harbinger of 9-11?
By NAOMI SHIHAB NYE
Special to the Chronicle
In the dark times, Will there also be singing? Yes, there will be singing About the dark times. Bertolt Brecht The year 2001 felt as if humanity had taken a major wrong turn. We teach our children to use language to communicate instead of hitting, fighting and biting. Then look what adults do. The Sept. 11 tragedies stand tall, despite all that fell, in their senseless horror. People who hadn't said words like "wicked" or "evil" in years found them rising to their lips. A darkly handsome Native American friend reported truckers shouting at him, "Go back to your country!"

Naomi Shihab Nye Cinnamon Twist
We did not mean to hurt my mother's feelings when we filled out the application form in her name in response to the HELP WANTED sign in the window of the bakery. She was startled to be called for an interview regarding a job to which she had not applied. It was not the first mistake in anyone's life. It sounded comforting. It is easy to imagine her never smiling through any of these transactions, keeping a stern face, taking the money as you would touch something that had fallen into a toilet. She blamed us. Sure she did. As if we had known. The thought of these things being baked into cake had never occurred to me on this earth, even in my oddest fantasy, nor to my father; the two innocents, as we depicted ourselves during her rages. To us, the only thing to worry about in a bakery was what kind of shortening they used in the cookies or how long the cupcakes had been in the case. We had tricked her into bondage to a bakery of shame. So quit! we begged her. Quit! But her German Lutheran upbringing which said something about never running from a task once your name was on the time chart was something we could not reckon with. "He took a duck in the face at two hundred and fifty knots." W. Gibson Main October 11, 2002 NAOMI SHIHAB NYE: The Art of Disappearing. When they say Don't I know you? say no. When they invite you to the party remember what parties are like before answering. Someone telling you in a loud voice they once wrote a poem. Greasy sausage balls on a paper plate. Then reply. If they say we should get together. say why? It's not that you don't love them any more. You're trying to remember something too important to forget. Trees. The monastery bell at twilight. Tell them you have a new project. It will never be finished. When someone recognizes you in a grocery store nod briefly and become a cabbage. When someone you haven't seen in ten years appears at the door, don't start singing him all your new songs. You will never catch up. Walk around feeling like a leaf. Know you could tumble any second. Then decide what to do with your time. Read an interview with Naomi Shihab Nye by Bill Moyers here Posted by The Dynamic Driveler at October 11, 2002 09:47 PM

Two Poems
by Naomi Shihab Nye
By Robert Hass

August 22, 1999
H ere's a poem for the season from Naomi Shihab Nye. She's a Palestinian American poet who lives in San Antonio. This comes from her most recent book, "Fuel," published by BOA Editions: The Last Day of August A man in a lawn chair with a book on his lap realizes pears are falling from the tree right beside him. Each makes a round, full sound in the grass. Perhaps the stem takes an hour to loosen and let go. This man who has recently written words to his father forty years in the birthing: I was always afraid of you, When would you explode next? has sudden reverence for the pears. If a dark bruise rises, if ants inhabit the juicy crack, or the body remains firm, unscarred, remains secret till tomorrow . . . By then the letter to his father may be lying open on a table. We gather pears in baskets, sacks. What will we do with everything that has been given us? Ginger pears, pear pies, fingers weighing flesh. Which will be perfect under the skin? It is hard not to love the pile of peelings growing on the counter next to the knife.

Lights in the Windows
Naomi Shihab Nye Years ago a girl handed me a note as I was leaving her proud town of Albany, Texas, a tiny, lovely place far in the west of our big state."I'm glad to know there is another poemist in the world," the note said. "Ialways knew we would find one another someday and our lights would cross." Our lights would cross. That girl had not stood out to me, I realized, among the other upturned, interested faces in the classroom. How many otherlights had I missed? I carried her smudged note for thousands of miles. I was fascinated with the earliest poems I read and heard that gave insightinto all the secret territories of the human spirit, our relationships with oneanother. Somehow those glimpses felt comforting, like looking through the litwindows of other people's homes at dusk, before they closed the curtains. Howdid other people live their lives? Just a sense of so many otherworlds out there, beginning with the next house on my own street, gave me agreat energy. How could anyone ever feel lonely? One of the first books Iloved in my life was a thick, gray anthology edited by Helen Ferris, called Favorite Poems Old and New . I still have my early edition, though it iscoming a little loose at the spine. Rich, intelligent voices spoke to me eachtime I opened its covers. I found Rabindranath Tagore, Carl Sandburg, EmilyDickinson, living side-by-side. I imagined I was part of a much largerfamily.
