Patrick O'Brian, Novelist of the Age of Fighting Sail
By Tim Paulson
“Eighty five: that is a great age. And then he immediately regretted it.” So wrote novelist Patrick O'Brian in Blue at the Mizzen , the final of his celebrated 20-volume series of novels set in the age of fighting sail. The sentiments were those of Jack Aubrey, the brawny Royal Navy officer and hero of the books, but they carried a portent: a few months after penning the lines, O’Brian himself reached that ‘great age’ and, in Dublin on January 4, breathed his last. To any reader of the series, calling Aubrey the hero is equivocal – he shares the quarterdeck with his beloved physician friend, Stephen Maturin. Wiry, intensely private, given to substance abuse and introspection (and no seaman), the Irish-Catalan Maturin is widely considered to be O’Brian’s alter ego. And indeed the author never denied it. This much is clear: the meeting of Aubrey and Maturin at a concert on Majorca has acquired the literary impact of Sherlock Holmes’ encounter with Dr. Watson. Their adventures were declared “the best historical novels ever written” by the New York Times’ Book Review , and were praised for their “savagery and tenderness, beauty and mystery and boldness and dignity,” by Eudora Welty. Well into his seventies, O’Brian was suddenly being compared to Melville, Conrad, Proust, and – most importantly to O’Brian himself – Jane Austen. His success had been a long time coming.

A Life Revealed by Dean King Published by Henry Holt and Company
Read Chapter One
"It is only in knowing the truth about O'Brian's life that we can fully grasp the magnitude and nature of his accomplishment.... His genius was largely that he had connected with his 'different self' to create from disappointing realityquite magicallyextraordinary fiction, fiction that, for so many of us, embodies the sheer joy of reading.
From the Introduction In 1991, when The New York Times Book Review proclaimed Patrick O'Brian the writer of "the greatest historical novels ever written," making him an overnight sensation in the United States, O'Brian was already in his mid-seventies and had already had two distinct and remarkable writing careers. In less than a decade, O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, ultimately twenty novels strong, became an unprecedented literary juggernaut, with legions of devoted fans around America and around the world. With O'Brian's death in January 2000, curiosity about the carefully guarded secrets of his life has peaked. Here, Dean King tells the story of a man, an artist and an intellectual, born Richard Patrick Russ, who first achieves literary recognition as an adolescent, when he publishes a series of popular adventure stories. After the Second World War, he emerges as Patrick O'Brian, a writer of dark, sometimes tortured short stories and highly literary novels. He enjoys success as a translator, even as a biographer. Slowly, the O'Brian persona, forged in his own imagination and refined by years of rumor and speculation, takes form, until his ultimate triumphant arrival as a masterful historical novelist and chronicler of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars.

Patrick O Brian
In Memoriam: Patrick O'Brian
12 December 1914 - 2 January 2000
Patrick O'Brian passed away in a Dublin hotel room on 2 January 2000 at the age of 85. His body was returned to his home in the village of Collioure, France , to be buried in a cemetary plot next to his late wife Mary. " Searching for POB " is Jim Klein's interesting account of a visit to Collioure with his wife Zelda, and their quest to pay respects at O'Brian's grave site. Please imagine that the Gunroom burgee at the head of this page has been lowered on its halyard to half-mast. Though a great writer who has given hours upon days upon weeks of reading pleasure to myriad readers has died, he has secured for himself immortality through his great art, which will live on well beyond his brief tenure in this world. ...And I will not say I cried at his death, but I will not say I did not.

March 1994
Editor's Column
In this issue of the Newsletter Patrick O'Brian gives his personal reflections on the triumphant American publicity tour last November for The Wine Dark Sea , two gruelling weeks in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Boston that pushed the book onto several bestseller lists. But he is too modest to recount the astonishing outpouring of enthusiasm, gratitude and effection that marked the many readings and receptions along the way. Neither the Princeton Club in New York nor the National Archives in Washington, D.C., had ever drawn such numbers to a lecture, and the Boston Athenaeum was filled to capacity as well. At a book signing at Crown Books in McLean, Virginia, the line stretched literally out the door, and one man admitted to having driven all the way from South Dakota just to get O'Brian's autograph. The Mauritius Command > Customer Review #1: First-rate REAL historical fiction!
The Mauritius Command > Customer Review #2: Aubrey hoists his pennant... "The Mauritius Command" opens a few years after the end of "HMS Surprise". Jack has discovered married life to be very different than he imagined, and longs to be back at sea. The arrival of Stephen Maturin (and mushrooms) stirs the household to a frenzy. This humorous beginning shows Patrick OBrians masterful abilities. In a few deft strokes, the past years are filled in with no heavy exposition or flashbacks, and the events to come are put into motion. Aubrey faces many new challenges in the course of "The Mauritius Command", having to learn to sooth battling egos, command while refraining from fighting, and create a fighting machine from almost nothing. His faithful follower Tom Pullings plays an expanded role in this tale as the captain of a transport and deus ex machina, while Stephen Maturins political abilities overshadow his medical duties.
