oe kenzaburo oe kenzaburo’s works typically trace two streams ofthought, one real and tangible and the other filled with imagery
    http://www.us-japan.org/lit/kenzaburo.html
Oe Kenzaburo Oe Kenzaburo’s works typically trace two streams of thought, one real and tangible and the other filled with imagery, symbolism and existentialist musings. Many of the author’s underlying themes and concepts are not immediately accessible, at times bogged down in sentimentality and literary discourse. To fully appreciate the works of this 1994 Nobel Prize winner it is necessary to consider his history and life experiences. Oe was born in 1935 in a tiny, secluded village nestled in the forests of Shikoku. The Oe clan had lived in these woods for generations, and the Oe women assumed the role of storytellers. Oe’s grandmother, in particular, fierecly defended the culture of the village, while imparting legend and fable to the children of the hamlet. Her stories related to historical events of the region and were often anti-nationalistic in content. When Oe was six, World War II broke out and militaristic education extended over the whole country. Oe was equally influenced by both the legends of his village and the upheavals of war-a dual conflict which echoes throughout his work. Oe was also heavily influenced by two books-The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Strange Adventures of Nils Holgersson-gifts from his mother. Japan’s defeat in the war in 1945 saw democratic principles permeate young Oe’s world. The boy took democracy to heart, and at the age of eighteen he took his first train trip to Tokyo realizing the city offered paths beyond his tiny enclave. Oe enrolled in the Department of French Literature at Tokyo University. In 1957 Oe began writing, producing mainly autobiographically-based works bearing influences from Jean-Paul Satre and other modern French writers. His short story, The Catch (1958), won him the Akutagawa Award.

Oe Kenzaburo was born in 1935 near the forests near Shikoku. The village where he grew up was very traditional in its cultural identity. The women of his family assumed the role of storytellers, thus passing down the story of the region's history. These stories often had more in common with legend than with what we would call traditional history. In 1954 he enrolled in Tokyo University where he studied French literature. He studied under Professor Kazuo Watanabe, a specialist in French literature. Professor Watanabe was very interested in imagery in literature. This interest influenced him to re-evaluate the stories and myths that he had heard ftom the women in his village while growing up as a boy. Oe Kenzaburo began writing in 1957, while still a French literature student. He published his first short story in 1957 entitled "The Catch". He published his first novel in 1958 (Bud-Nipping, Lamb Shooting). In 1964 he wrote "A Personal Matter" a work of nonfiction about his son who was born with a cranial deformity resulting in his becoming a mentally-handicapped person. The following year he wrote another piece of non-fiction entitle "Hiroshima Notes". This piece described the realities and thoughts of the atomic bomb victims.
