Kenzaburo Oe's Muses
by Han Ki-Dongt
Kenzaburo Oe departs from Japan's conventions to write for a modern audience. This may explain why critics at home have not heaped praises on the 1994 Nobel laureate while many Western intellectuals seem captivated by his startling ideas. Although Oe often addresses socio-political issues in postwar Japan, his concerns are universal, says Roland Barthes ("Introduction to the Structural Analysis of Narrative," New Literary History , 237). Recurring themes that characterize what is distinctly Oe's art include the development of a cultural hero, the defeat of Japan and the cost of that defeat, and the birth of a retarded son (Michiko N. Wilson, The Marginal World of Oe Kenzaburo , 6). Of his many works that have been translated into English, The Silent Cry stands out, winning a large number of Western fans."

Conversations with History: Institute of International Studies, UC Berkeley
Photo by Jane Scherr This interview is part of the Institute's "Conversations with History" series, and uses Internet technology to share with the public Berkeley's distinction as a global forum for ideas. Our guest is the distinguished Japanese writer Kenzaburo Oe. His prolific body of novels, short stories, and critical and political essays has won almost every major international honor. Oe's achievements as a writer committed to both literary and humanitarian causes were recognized in 1994 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. In works such as A Personal Matter, The Silent Cry, A Quiet Life, Hiroshima Notes, and A Healing Family, Oe's art moves from the personal to the political, exploring how the individual, in confronting life's tragedies overcomes humiliation and shame to "get on with life," and in so doing, finds personal dignity and a renewed sense of his responsibility to his fellow man. Mr. Oe is on the Berkeley campus today to give the Maruyama Lecture, sponsored by the Center for Japanese Studies and the Townsend Center for the Humanities.

Five years later the birth of his severely brain-damaged son marked a turning point in his life and work. His best known novel, A Personal Matter (1964, tr. 1968), deals with a father's slow acceptance of his similarly handicapped infant son. Several of his other works concern this theme. In life, he and his wife have devoted much of their lives to their son's care. Oe's other works include more than 20 novels, among them The Silent Cry (1967, tr. 1974) and The Pinch Runner Memorandum (1976, tr. 1993), several short-story collections, essays, and Hiroshima Notes (1965, tr. 1995), which chronicles the courage of the victims of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima. His often angry and politically charged tales, his recurrent themes of abnormality, sexuality, and marginality, and his gritty, realistic style set him apart from the mainstream Japanese literary tradition. Oe was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1994. His firstborn son
