Oe, Kenzaburo Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids (tr. 1995). Five years later the birth of his severely brain-damaged son marked a turning point in his life and work. His best known novel, A Personal Matter (1964, tr. 1968), deals with a father's slow acceptance of his similarly handicapped infant son. Several of his other works concern this theme. In life, he and his wife have devoted much of their lives to their son's care. Oe's other works include more than 20 novels, among them The Silent Cry (1967, tr. 1974) and The Pinch Runner Memorandum (1976, tr. 1993), several short-story collections, essays, and Hiroshima Notes (1965, tr. 1995), which chronicles the courage of the victims of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima. His often angry and politically charged tales, his recurrent themes of abnormality, sexuality, and marginality, and his gritty, realistic style set him apart from the mainstream Japanese literary tradition. Oe was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1994. His firstborn son

Oe, Kenzaburo Japanese writer, essayist, and Nobel laureate, who is perhaps the greatest Japanese novelist since World War II (1939-1945).
Oe was born in a remote mountain village in Shikoku, a location often featured in his work, and grew up during World War II. In 1954 he entered Tokyo University and in 1958 won the prestigious Akutagawa Prize for his story Shiiku (1958; translated as The Catch, 1959), describing a village's custody of a captured black airman. His first full-length novel, Memushiri kouchi (1958; Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids, 1995), established his reputation as an important postwar writer. Oe wrote about the alienating conditions of modern Japan while supporting left-wing political causes. Despite his political sympathies, Oe maintained a friendship with nationalist writer Mishima Yukio.
In 1963 the birth of a mentally handicapped son and a visit to Hiroshima heralded a new direction in Oe's writing. Hiroshima noto (1965; Hiroshima Notes, 1995) combines reportage with reflection on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, in August 1945. This period of Oe's career culminated in his masterpiece Man'en gannen no futtoboru (1967; The Silent Cry, 1974). A complex and intellectual work, the novel contains themes of existential crisis, history, myth, and cultural identity. Later novels explore antinuclear and ecological issues. Oe's works also include Kozui wa waga tamashii ni oyobi (The Floodwaters Have Come in Unto My Soul, 1973), Dojidai gemu (Contemporary Games, 1979), the science fiction best-seller Chiryoto (The Treatment Tower, 1990), and Jinsei no shinseki (1989; An Echo of Heaven, 1996). He was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize for literature.

Images of disabled children
by Megan Donnelly
Most noteworthy in Oe's fiction are the characters modeled in part on his son Hikari (meaning "light"), born in 1964 with what doctors believed to be a herniated brain. Oe was told that even if the baby survived surgery, he would likely have only "a kind of vegetable existence." Oe's works reflect his personal struggle: whether he should follow the doctors' advice and let the child die "naturally" without surgery or let him live and be forced to come to terms with the "monster baby." Oe's works after 1964 shed light on the darkness of human despair, as well as the lighter, lesser-known joys of raising a disabled child, whose appearance is as disruptive to the author's life as a nuclear explosion. In the novel The Silent Cry , Oe writes about a man trying to pull his life together after the death of his close friend and the birth of a deformed child, described as "the amputated growth" and someone "being cooked in some bubbling broth." While Oe is considering the option of surgery for his son, he began the novel
