SHARON OLDS READING Works by Sharon Olds and Galway Kinell. Bartos Theatre, Wiesner Building. Thursday, October 18, 7:30. By NIC KELMAN POETRY AT THE MEDIA LAB has been running successfully now for three years under the apparently competent guidance of Uri Wilensky himself a poet about to be published and the evening with Sharon Olds was the second in the current series. It was, according to Wilensky, the most difficult in his three years to arrange, as her poetry has been referred to as "seeing description as a means to candor," "having no subject off limits," and having "shattered pious conventions for poetry." Olds herself said last night that she initially felt "poetry was something one should do absolutely by oneself" but that now she feels it is something to be shared . . . in general. She currently has three books to her name, all collections of her poetry and all published since 1980, and is about to have her fourth published. The format of the poetry series is such that each visiting poet reads first from their favorite poet(s) and thus allows the audience to gain greater insight into the poet and his or her poetic influences, a system which is both commendable and successful. Thus Sharon Olds started with readings from one of her favorite poet's books

When I grew up there were so few poems about women from a woman's point of view, so few poems about children from a child's point of view." Born in San Francisco in 1942, Sharon Olds was raised as a "hellfire Calvinist" in Berkeley, California. Her work has been praised for its courage, emotional power, and extraordinary physicality. She teaches in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at New York University and is the State Poet of New York from 1998-2000. "The Clasp" She was four, he was one, it was raining, we had colds, we had been in the apartment two weeks straight, I grabbed her to keep her from shoving him over on his face, again, and when I had her wrist

'Blood, Tin, Straw' by Sharon Olds Sharon Olds' bold images can captivate or offend Sunday, May 14, 2000 By Michael Schneider Blood, Tin, Straw By Sharon Olds Knopf
With “Satan Says,” published in 1980 by the University of Pittsburgh Press, Sharon Olds launched a relatively late-blooming poetic career she was 37 that hasn’t slowed down. Recognized as one of America’s finest poets, Olds is certainly one of the most popular. For serious poetry, her books sell off the charts. Her second collection, “The Dead and the Living” (1984), which won a National Book Critics Circle Award, has sold more than 50,000 copies. Her third, “The Gold Cell” (1987), is in its 15th printing. Born in San Francisco, Olds was educated at Stanford and Columbia, where she endured to obtain her doctorate in literature while working to find her voice as a poet. One poem from this new collection, “The Defense,” recounts the ordeal of defending her dissertation. Known for intimate poems about sexuality and family life, Olds is seen by many as the center of a back-to-the-body movement in poetry, especially by women.

The Connoisseuse of Slugs
by Sharon Olds - 1983
When I was a connoisseuse of slugs I would part the ivy leaves, and look for the naked jelly of those gold bodies,
translucent strangers glistening along the stones, slowly, their gelatinous bodies at my mercy. Made mostly of water,
they would shrivel to nothing if they were sprinkled with salt,
but I was not interested in that. What I liked was to draw aside the ivy, breathe the odor of the wall,
and stand there in silence until the slug forgot I was there and sent it antennae up out of its head, the glimmering umber horns rising like telesopes,
until finally the sensitive knobs would pop out the ends, delicate and intimate. Years later,
when I first saw a naked man, I gasped with pleasure to see that quiet mystery reenacted,
the slow elegant being coming out of hiding and gleaming in the dark air

Poet Sharon Olds to read at Vassar, November 27 Sharon Olds, New York State Poet Laureate for 1998-2000, will read and discuss her poetry on Tuesday, November 27, at 5:30 p.m. in Vassar College's Taylor Auditorium, Taylor Hall, as part of the Elizabeth Bishop Poetry Series. The reading, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Department of English and the Office of the Dean of the Faculty. The author of several volumes of poetry, most recently "The Wellspring," Olds commits herself in verse to an unflinching investigation of things she feels literature has overlooked. Her poetry might record the mundane wait at the supermarket register, or unravel truths about family relationships and sexuality. Olds' second volume of poetry, "The Dead and the Living," published in 1984, won the Lamont Poetry Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. "What is most striking is Olds' vigorous and fecund metaphorical imagination," one reviewer wrote for the American Book Review. "In a way, these poems describe a psychic world seen under water." Olds' work is anthologized in over 100 collections, ranging from literary poetry textbooks to special collections.
