Tillie Olsen was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1912 or 1913, she is not sure of the date because it was never recorded. Her parents, working-class Russian Jews, immigrated to the U.S. after participating in the ill-fated 1905 Russian Revolution. Her parents were active in the Socialist Party and her father served as State Secretary of the Nebraska Socialist Party. Olsen dropped out of school at 16 to help support her family during the Depression. Politically active as a teen, she was a member of the Young Communist League (YCL) and was jailed for a month in 1931 for distributing leaflets to packinghouse workers. She began working on her first novel, Yonnondio , the story of the struggles of a depression-era family, when she was 19. She continued to work on the novel over a four year period that included moving in with YCL colleague Jack Olsen and the birth of a child. The first part of her book was published in the Partisan Review in 1934. She stopped work on the novel in 1937. In 1944 she married Jack Olsen. During the 1940's and early 1950's she had three more children, took at a number of different jobs factory worker, waitress, and secretary. During this period she continued to be active in political causes. She didn't resume work on Yonnondio until 1953, when her youngest daughter entered school. She finally published Yonnondio in 1974. Olsen is considered one of the early activists in the women's movement. Works include:

Peacework has been published monthly since 1972, intended to serve as a source of dependable information to those who strive for peace and justice and are committed to furthering the nonviolent social change necessary to achieve them. Rooted in Quaker values and informed by AFSC experience and initiatives, Peacework offers a forum for organizers, fostering coalition-building and teaching the methods and strategies that work in the global and local community. Peacework seeks to serve as an incubator for social transformation, introducing a younger generation to a deeper analysis of problems and issues, reminding and re-inspiring long-term activists, encouraging the generations to listen to each other, and creating space for the voices of the disenfranchised. Views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of the AFSC.

Working-Class Author Tillie Olsen (1913- )
Tillie Olsen didn't have much time to write until she was almost 50 years old. The daughter of Russian immigrants, she dropped out of high school after the 11th grade to go to work full time. Her parents were active socialists in Nebraska, and although her growing-up years were marked by poverty, Tillie says, "It was a rich childhood from the standpoint of ideas." Tillie wrote skits and musicals for the Young Socialist League when she was a teenager. In 1931, she joined the Young Communist League and went to Kansas City to attend a Communist Party school. While in Kansas City, Tillie was arrested for distributing leaflets to packinghouse workers. She became extremely ill with pleurisy in jail and when she was released, Tillie moved to Minnesota early in 1932 to recuperate. Bedridden by the incipient tuberculosis that had developed from the pleurisy, for the first time in her life, Tillie had time to write and quickly completed the first three chapters of her novel Yonnondio . As she began to recover, however, Tillie became involved in a relationship that resulted in pregnancy, and she had her first child when she was 19 years old. Tillie had submitted an excerpt from her novel to the

A biography of the writer, feminist and activist Tillie Olsen. Term Paper #: # of words: Written: Price: Hide: Author: Gloria Arena
Abstract
This paper looks at the life of Tillie Olsen who was born into a working class family and who overcame her disadvantaged upbringing to become a famous author and political activist. Her devotion to her literary work, to her family and to her politics were inextricable from one another and from the larger entity of Tillie herself. This paper also reviews some of her works and evaluates how they are based on lifetime experiences.
From The Paper
"Due to her exposure to many politicos and intellectuals, as well as a natural endowment of intellectual capabilities, Tillie was able to transcend the limitations of her socio-economic status, if only for a brief time, to attend an academic high school where she was presented with greater opportunity and a richer education. And though financial needs would force her to drop out a year before she could graduate, she would be fast to point out in later interviews that she was blessed with far more education than most women in her peer group, particularly those born of working class families. But more often than not, her writing was guided heavily by political influences, as opposed to academic ones."

(Used in Dr. Bollinger's class) The Climax of "I Want You Women Up North to Know"
Lines 85-97 of Tillie Olsen's first published poem "I Want You Women Up North to Know" contain the climactic turning point of this poem, and the language and form reflect this change. Instead of being humble and disjointed victims who remain mostly anonymous, the workers are transformed into an angry and unified group of distinct individuals. This shift in mood is accomplished by three devices: imagery, grouping, and capitalization of proper names. The imagery in this passage helps turn the tone of the poem from victimization to anger. In addition to fire images, the overall language is completely stripped down to bare ugliness. In previous lines, the sordidness has been intermixed with cheerful euphemisms: the agonizing work is an "exquisite dance" (24); the trembling hands are "white gulls" (22); the cough is "gay" (25). But in these later lines, all aesthetically pleasing terms vanish, leaving "sweet and …blood" (85), "naked… [and]…bony children" (89), and a "skeleton body" (95). Another way this passage turns the mood of the poem is by using grouping and form to link the workers together, both in inference and appearance. Previously, each worker’s situation has been treated as an isolated story, literally separated from the others by a blank line. However, lines 85-97 are crowded together without spaces, suggesting unity by the very appearance of the lines. All of the grievances are briefly repeated, and then a sequence of "ands" binds the one-sentence recaps together. Yet in spite of this sense of solidarity, each person’s story is given its own sentence with a period boundary, subtly emphasizing their individual importance: solidarity is acceptable, but anonymity is not.

Tillie Olsen's contribution to American life and literature is immense. CSUN faculty, staff and students had the privilege Wednesday of meeting Olsen and hearing her discuss her collection of stories titled "Tell Me A Riddle" and other issues related to writing. Those attending the discussion were treated to Olsen's reading of her poetry and short fiction, her advice for writers, her political philosophy, and her ability to situate herself in and articulate the concerns of the historical moment. The highlight for many in attendance at the discussion was her reading of her poignant poem, "I Want You Women Up North To Know." It deals directly with the upper class's ignorance to the plight of immigrant workers producing the products purchased and prized by the nation's cultural elite. Strikingly contemporary Written in the 1930s, it is strikingly contemporary, as it prefigures current headlines exposing the exploitation of workers in sweat shops. Olsen was born in 1912 and began writing poems, journalism and a novel while attempting to earn a living as a tie presser, meat trimmer, domestic worker and waitress during the Great Depression.
