A n i n t e r v i e w w i t h M i c h a e l O n d a a t j e By GARY KAMIYA those who marvel at the luxurious energy of Michael Ondaatje's imagination, the muscular exuberance of his storytelling, the gem-like intelligence of his language, may not be surprised to learn that his own family history has been as fantastic as his prose. As he relates in his marvelous memoir, "Running in the Family," Ondaatje grew up in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), the child of a strong-willed mother and a brilliant, maniacally eccentric father who was given, when in his superhuman cups, to pulling revolvers on trains and forcing them to run back and forth at his pleasure. As Ondaatje explores his Dutch-Ceylonese genealogy, he paints a sad, hilarious, unforgettable picture of lives lived to a surreal tropical hilt: an entire society consumed by compulsive gambling, whether on the race-track or on which crow would leave a wall first; endless affairs; bitter, witty feuds carried out in the "comments" section of hotel registers. Salon spoke to Ondaatje in San Francisco, where he was on tour promoting the film.

Biography
Michael Ondaatje was born in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) on September 12, 1943. In 1954, he moved to England with his mother. After relocating to Canada in 1962, he received his BA from the University of Toronto and his MA from Queen's University in Kingston. Ondaatje is perhaps best known for the screen adaptation of his novel, The English Patient , which won nine Academy Awards in 1996. However, his writing career began with four books of poetry. The Collected works of Billy the Kid shared the Governor General's award for poetry in 1970 with bpNichol 's The True Eventual Story of Billy the Kid and three other Nichol texts. Ondaatje won again in 1979 for poetry and in 1992 for fiction with The English Patient . One only has to compare the 'poems' of Billy the Kid and the 'novel' Coming Through Slaughter to understand how Ondaatje's rich language marks a narrative style that often resists generic classifications. He has also made three films, including a 35 minute film about bpNichol entitled Sons of Captain Poetry . Ondaatje currently resides in Toronto with his wife, Linda Spalding. Together, they edit the literary journal

    Biographical Sketch
Michael Ondaatje was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1943. He studied in Colombo, England, and in Canada at Bishop’s University, the University of Toronto (B.A., 1965) and Queen’s University (M.A., 1967). Ondaatje’s earliest works were poetry: The Dainty Monsters (1967), and The Man with Seven Toes (1969). These were followed by The Collected Works of Billy the Kid: Left-Handed Poems (1970) and There’s a Trick with a Knife I’m Learning to Do (1979) which both received the Governor General’s Literary Award for poetry. As in Billy the Kid , his Coming through Slaughter (1976), explores the relationship between art and life through his fictionalized account of the life of Charles "Buddy" Bolden (1876-1931). His ostensibly autobiographical, Running in the Family (1982), is a collection of interrelated sketches, stories, poems and photographs that renders a fictionalized portrait of his family history in Sri Lanka. His tendency to blur the boundaries between reality, fiction and legend is seen in his semi-historical impressionistic novel about Toronto in the 1920s

    Michael Ondaatje
Writer Sri Lanka/ Canada Born 12 Sep 1943
Born and raised in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) of Dutch-Indian ancestry, Ondaatje left his homeland for England at the age of 11, having begun his education in Sinhalese. At school, he learnt to appreciate the strange layering of history: 'We began with myths and later included actual events.' Ondaatje's childhood memoir, 'Running In The Family', explains his early years, the child of a strong-willed mother and a brilliant, maniacally eccentric father.
Michael Ondaatje is a literary phenomenon: a best-selling writer, one whose work is a stunning fusion of jazz rhythms, film montage technique, and profoundly beautiful language. Although he is best known as a novelist, Ondaatje's work also encompasses memoir, poetry, and film, and reveals a passion for defying conventional form.
Ondaatje is himself a fascinating intersection of cultures. As he explores his Dutch-Ceylonese genealogy in 'Running In The Family', he paints a sad, hilarious, unforgettable picture of lives lived to a surreal tropical hilt. He depicts an entire society consumed by compulsive gambling, whether on the race-track or on which crow would leave a wall first; endless affairs; bitter, witty feuds carried out in the 'comments' section of hotel registers.
From this, to his Governor-General's award-winning book of poetry, 'There's A Trick With A Knife I'm Learning To Do', Ondaatje casts a spell over his readers.

    Ondaatje, Michael The English Patient
Genre Novel Keywords Blindness Caregivers Catastrophe Death and Dying ... War and Medicine Summary In the waning days of World War II, Hana, a Canadian nurse, refuses to leave the temporary hospital in a Tuscan villa where she cares for her mysterious English patient, a soldier burned and bandaged beyond recognition. The patient is haunted by the memory of a love affair in North Africa. Hana is joined by Kip, a Sikh bomb-disposal expert, who becomes her lover, and by Caravaggio, a friend of her father and sometime-criminal-turned spy. The three establish a loose pattern of precarious existence in a ravaged world and form a bond of love around the dying man whose identity they try to uncover. Commentary A shadowy mood dominates this widely acclaimed novel that contrasts love and loyalty with the ugliness of fear and war. In the villa, time is suspended, but the characters move back and forth in their private memories, which are only guessed at by the others.
